Hi all! I know having 'just one' is so hard to do, and well, we are definitely going through that!

We bought our dear Bailey 1 week ago and have thought about a playmate for him. We do have a young daughter, and they get a long great; however, they don't really play as much as little Bailey would like. We aren't looking 'seriously' yet, but have thrown out the idea. Bailey just loves to play and even though we play with him a lot, my poor husband's teeth are hurting from playing tug of war so much!!

My question, for those that have mutliples, how old was your current Yorkie when you decided to make an addition to the family? Also, do males need to have another male buddy or a female buddy? Does that make that big of a difference?

It has been so long since I have had more than 1 dog that I have so many questions that may seem silly! I used to foster for a rescue group about 4 years ago and that was the last time I had multiple pets!

I love having more than one!! They are SOOO much fun to watch as they play.

It really depends on the person when to get a new baby. Some would rather have two to potty train and get it over with at one time or some would rather wait until one is older and can help train the baby. I would rather mix a female with a male, just make sure they are fixed

Don't mix two stud dogs together...that can be BIG trouble later on.

As a mom of four all with in 6 months of age of each other, I'd suggest having the first fully potty trained BEFORE adding another.
I got Gizmo in June and then 3 weeks later added Lacie and 3 weeks later Teddy and 4 weeks later Duchess . who is almost 1 year old now.
And potty training four at once was very hard.
you just can't watch them and devote as much time to teaching them right from wrong.
Just my opinon though,

All our children are grown, so we replaced them with 3 yorkies...I guess I need another one someday to replace the 4th children...I'm working on that idea with my husband !

4 !! We love them all equally, just like our skinkids...Amen

That is cute! I only have 3. Sandy was 3 when we got TJ. There was a little jealousy at first. She wanted to know when that thing was going back home.

But we worked through that. They are great buddies. And last we added Dexter. A few problems between the males until TJ was neutered and we are working through that. All in all... I wouldn't trade any of them. They are all so loving and such sweet babies. Love those Yorkies.

I have absolutely LOVED having two!

Franklin was around 8 or 9 months when we added Maggie (who is 3 1/2 years old). I think the general consensus is that a male and a female get along better than two of the same sex as sometimes they fight for dominance. If you're worried about the boy having someone to "rough house" with, no worries! My Maggie can beat up Franklin any day. Just make sure they will be around the same size full grown so you don't have to worry about injuries or anything like that.

But really -- getting Maggie was the best possible thing I have done for Franklin. He loves having a playmate, and I feel much better about leaving him at home knowing he has a warm body to snuggle with.

Go for it!

We currently have three. Autumn was 14 months when we got Blaze (they have the same mom) and we rescued Chance this June so Autumn was 21 months and Blaze was 9 months. Whether it is yorkies or another breed I have always found it better to have more then one dog. They love having a companion and it is a lot of fun to see them interact!

I love having more than one but it is easier in my opinion if you wait for the first one to be potty trained

LOL, we did the same thing!!!We have two boys under our roof. My daughter who lives 1 block from us has two females and 4 pups that were sired from my stud. They stay at my house more than they stay there, so we have 8 now lol....I know we are nuts...the 4 babies will go to forever homes and the usual bunch of 4 will remain...but I had 1 male to start with and then added another male when my first was 15 months old....don't know if its best to have one male, one female or two males or two females. Ours have their moments when they all fight, but all in all they love each other. We have more pics of them around the house than the skin kids now

They like to be in pairs !
If you have a male, get a female...and get her speyed or him neutered...they will be best buds for life...I have 2x2pairs and it's fab !!! Both females are speyed and maybe new pup will be neutered too...can't have 2 fighting males ! 2 entire females and 2 entire males will fight

Well so far I have 4. 2 girls and 2 boys. Both boys are fixed and I have no problems with them. Well except Dante and it isn't really a problem. See he has long legs and he is 10.5 lbs. But he raises his leg to pee but he tries so hard to make sure it only goes on the pad. Anyway I got Maggie first and from her 1st litter I was only keeping one boy but then hubby said keep the other one so I have my two Yorkie boys with tails. and then I decided I wanted to get into the more serious side of owning Yorkies and just brought home my first show prospect her name is Friday. I know I am far from done in getting anymore. I told Hubby that in a couple years I would be getting yet another one. I think it's only fair since He stole my Leo from me.

Duke is 7 years old, and I just got him a playmate 2 weeks ago. We got a female, we thought he might do better with a female but I also wanted to have a girl anyway. So far he doesn't seem to pleased with her, I think she may just be to puppyish and hyper for him, she tries to play and he runs from her

I've never had just one dog & they all get along fine together.

At the moment I have three Yorkies plus a few Skyes & Cairns, which I've always bred & shown, so they're used to puppies coming along. I've never, ever had an older dog turn against a puppy, they usually try to adopt them & always play with them.

The most likely cause of problems is having two entire dogs together, especially if they've been used at stud. Occassionally two females will develop a severe dislike of each other, but more often they are great friends.
Neutered ones, especially one of each, are rarely any problem.

Thank you all so much for your wonderful replies!! This post has definitely made us even more excited about bringing home another little one for Bailey! I asked Bailey if he wanted a little sister and he got excited!!!

Okay, maybe that was my wishful thinking?!

I do agree with wanting Bailey to be potty trained or at least "mostly" potty trained. He is doing great so far and is only 10 1/2 weeks old! He makes us very proud. I think we are going to wait until he is probably 6 months or so and go from there. If the "right" one comes along before that, we are not against bringing her home!

Thank you all for your wonderful stories! Everyone sounds like they have such a wonderful family!

I got Timmy first then picked up Mimi about 3 weeks after I got him. I loved having them so close in age. She learned to potty on a pad because of him. They are also very close although they get on each others nerves every once in a while. I added my 3rd 7 months ago..I rescued her from a yorkie rescue.
