Embarassed about dog clothes I was dropping my son off at school this morning and this lady who sells candles is trying to get everyone to have a party and sell candles under her, i'm nice so I just nod and listen. I do not want to do either. Anyway she really gets pushy with me, saying since I'm a stay at home mom what a wonderful business opportunity this would be for me, etc. etc. Well I finally told her I have my own business and I really don't have the time or interest for candles. Well she got annoyed and asked what it was that I do and I told her I make little dog clothes and sell them on the internet. She got the wierdest expression on her face and said, "like for contests or something?" :rolleyes: I said no. And she said "like dress them up like babies?" and I said well, yes I guess you could put it that way. Well she went on and on about how stupid that is and how could I actually be making any money doing that, and how stupid people were to be dressing DOGS! She really went off on me. And this was in front of a lot of people, I am pretty shy so I was horrified. This is someone I will have to see every day. What is up with some people? Doesn't she know who Paris Hilton is? :p I have never felt embarassed about dressing my dogs, most people SAY how cute they are in their little outfits, but I just really don't know what to say to this lady. It took me by suprise. Got any good comebacks for me? I also get this everytime I go to the craft store to get fabric, people ask me what am I making? I always get the wierdest looks, so I have started to lie or say I'm not sure yet. Why do people think it is so wierd? It seems so common to me anymore. Heck, I even saw purse dog carriers on the shelves at Raley's last night, of all places. And Target has the cutest line of dog clothes. I just don't get what the big deal is... |
I don't either.... Whenever I take Bailey anywhere with me and he has a shirt on, I get at least 1 dumba** making a comment about how "I Need a baby." OMG what a loser! She is soooooooooo jealous that you have a thriving, successful business. You can tell she does NOT because she keeps harassing people to join her - she needs help! The next time she makes a rude remark, tell her that you have MANY customers who are very pleased with your work and you are always back-ordered because you keep constantly getting new orders. What a loser! I think your clothes are great and your babies look awesome in them! :D |
What an a**......"how do you make any money off of that"...I would've told her I was wonderig the same thing (concerning her candle business)...you should of directed her to YT and told her that many if not all of our furbabies are clothed..and not only for fashion reasons but because they are single coated dogs and they need to wear Clothes (dogs, jammies) in the cold because they don't do well otherwise. I am sorry that she embarassed you...but you should be PROUD...you do beautiful work and should be very proud of yourself!!!..p.s. want me to call her an tell her off :) |
How about telling her that the dogs you dress often end up looking better than the way 'some people' dress themselves...... then just stare at her so she gets the hint you mean her! :) |

You should have said that you do very well for yourself and given her your web address. I would also see if you can get the number of sales from the last year- I'm sure it's pretty impressive! You're not still in business because people think it's weird- this is a huge industry and you've been resourceful and creative enough to know a good thing when you see it. I love candles, but come on, how many people enter your home and just HAVE to know where you got that candle?! Has anyone told you how cute a candle looks or asked to take a picture with a candle? Who is in the more exciting industry?! Also, you could mention the fact that it's obviously quite a popular industry because you don't need to beg people to buy your clothes- they sell themselves. Isn't she the one pestering everyone so that she can make a living?! Be proud- girl, your stuff is great! When people are in the craft store and ask what you're making, tell them: "Dog apparel for my internet business. I'm so busy right now I can hardly see straight! Would you like a card?" and hand them a business card. Who the he** cares what people think about your career. You get to wake up every morning and earn a living by doing what you love. Believe me when I tell you that I, among millions of other people, am jealous of that fact alone! |
I am willing to stake my life dog clothes are much more profitable than candles. Whereas I have paid (and I admit this shamefully) over $100 for a Bruce sweater I would never pay more than $5 or $6 for a candle. Additionally, I would point out that you are not just an under paid middle man slinging some crappy Amway-esque product, you my friend are an independent designer/manufacturer catering to the upper eschelon of dogs! By the way where are you from that dressing dogs is so unusual? |
Girl...There are those people who will be so impressed with how creative you are.... and there will be those that want to knock it - Go with the happy people and don't let the negative people take up space in your head. ....What you're doing is creative AND there is a market for it - don't let anyone get you embarrassed for using your talent AND making money at the same time - many of us can't do that ... What a total jerk.. Some people just need to make everyone around them feel bad to make themselves feel good. Brush her off.. in a few years when she's not making a dime off her candles you can laugh in her face because you'll still be a huge success selling dog clothes. Being a success will be the best revenge against a witch like that. |

It simply amazes me how rude some people can be sometimes. Guess her mother didn't preach the "if ya can't say something nice"...... Don't be ashamed of what you do for a living. The way I see it, your clientele is an elite group of people with quite a few disposable dollars at hand and they chose to spend it on their dogs :) |

You mean you don't dress the babies to pick up your son up from school. Do so with pride you are very talented and should advertise the fact. I get weird looks when I put Jewels in a dress and take her out. So now I only put shirts or bandanas on her when I take her out. |
I was wondering if someone started a business like the candles or Mary Kay with the dog clothes if it would go, I think that would be more fun than tupperware... a dog clothes party!! Would that be a hit or is it just us that's crazy for dogs? |

You should have told her that your dogs are dressed better than some peoples kids and then looked her right in the eye. If she ever makes another comment about you making and selling dogs clothes just ask her what she makes on a candle then tell her what you make. LOL What an idiot!! |
OMG Jodi! What a witch. You should have laughed in her face and told her how STUPID her candle business is. I only go to those boring demonstrations if there is going to be FREE food (yes, I am a poor college student). I candle demonstrations, pampered chef, mary kay, etc. Doggie clothes are way cooler. P.s. If anyone in my family or my friends is reading this - take it as a hint that I just go to your demonstrations for FREE FOOD and DRINKS. Thanks! |
