You might want to invest in an x-pen....you can attach to the crate with the door left open to the x-pen , this way he can sleep in the crate and play eat and potty in the x-pen....
I have this for mine and it works great...she has a little toy box and every night i put her toys in it...and she empties it everyday...this way I know she is playing during the day...
Good luck!! I know how hard it was to leave her at first...I worried every minute....

We tried a play pen. Penny wouldn't have any part of it.

She did how ever like her crate. I put her little bed, toys food and water and a pee pad in and put a blanket on top for security.(so it wasn't just open) She's loved it ever since. That's her place. When we leave that is where she goes. I was working at the time. So I had to put her pee pad in there. I would be a nervous wreck if I left her out in the house while we were gone.

She mostly slept while I was gone. But when I walk in she is ready for me.

I'm home all the time with my girls, so of course my situation is a bit different.
But, right now, I'm home and Abby is asleep in her kennel. She loves it in there. I've never, not once put her in there, she goes in on her own.

I just think for his safety it's best to keep him in a smaller area where you know there's nothing he can get into that will hurt him.

I do understand your feelings. He doesn't necessarily have to be in a crate.

I just held my breath the first time Kayla was left. I don't work outside the home but I was in the hospital and hubby was staying up there during the day. I think what helped us with her was having my schnauzers. She kinda copies what they do. When they take a nap, she does too. She likes playing and tormenting them too. Its probably different with one because they can think of everything to get into. lol!!! I think what everyone suggested to you about the xpen would really be your answer. Good luck.

Cooper loses his mind when I get home, so be prepared for dramatic welcome. But my guess is he spends most of his time lounging in his crate.

Of course, you should leave a comfy place to sleep, food, water and toys. Some people also suggest leaving a tv or radio on to keep the puppy company.

I didn't specify that I leave Cooper in the laundry room. I have a baby gate up in the doorway. I didn't want to leave him in a crate all day, so this was my alternative. I would be worried about leaving him alone with free reign of the house. I shudder at the thought of what he might get in to!

I think I'm going to leave Mufasa in the laundry room as well. I can put up a baby gate so he can still see into the kitchen and living room. When I got home tonight he was so excited to see me, as usual. I love coming home to all that love! ha!

I got a shower tonight and he got right in with me....AGAIN. He looked like a little rat by the time I got out. He is sleeping on the couch beside me right now.
