I'd never heard about this either, but as soon as he said, "The hands should be reserved for praise and petting but they should never be the instrument of food ... Dropping the food from my mouth is the continuation of the beginning of benevolent eye contact. . ." there is just no way, I'm going to do this. Also, cute carriers and collars take all the dignity away from the dog????

I'm not sure about dropping food from the mouth either. But, I find some of his ideas very interesting. I already have his book on the way and now I can't wait to read it!

by Dale Stavroff..2007

building good eye contact...use treats to bring him closer..
gradually build up to 5 minutes of direct eye contact...
short 5 minute sessions...
use treats to draw the dog into your
"area of influence"..
make yourself smaller to lessen the threat to your dog while you draw
him closer to you and maintain eye contact...

hold the food treat in a way that causes your dog to look you in the eye
do not touch your dog. eye contact must be a volunteered behavior

I don't get it why? I don't really want to look in his eyes for 5 minutes, what's the purpose?

it is not in the nature of dogs to stay in very close physical proximity
to dominant forces such as human beings, so you must teach the dog that it is safest when it is closest to you....

benevolent eye contact is the foundation principle..
leading to confidence and TRUST...

Saying yes is attached to the benevolent eye contact.. simply say yes whenever the dog looks at you....soon the wo9rd will signal the dog to look at you..
a valuable tool for later training because it allows you to focus and freshen the dog's attention....


the goal is a responsive dog that will come to me when i call him, and stay close by.....a powerful tool

I thought all yorkies never left your side. I mean is this a problem people have? I just love being able to sneak into the bathroom alone.

there are lots of questions and problems about training.. as i have seen many questions in this forum... i am trying to learn these techniques... just referring to a good book by an expert.....i am no expert

I mean do you have a problem with getting your dog to come when you call him? That's usually the first trick I teach, and one of the easiest. I'm not against different training methods, but I just don't see the logic with this one. Maybe it's meant for animals who are having a problem with aggression, and that's why there is emphasis on eye contact.
