How do you respond? Lately, I have been making it a point to dress up my girls when we go out for a walk. Gracie's hair is looking so beautiful in a top knot or pigtails, and I love having the girls in matching clothes. When we go to the park, most people smile and sometimes giggle and comment on how cute they are. Others just shake their heads, and some "daddies" respond to their child's inquisition with "that's so silly". And others just laugh in disbelief. Here at the beach, the economy is not great, most of the folk are simple, fishing industry types with bigger dogs that run off leash on the beach. We obviously don't fit in here, other than at the pet store that sells dog clothes. Do you care what other people think? When the comment is not so positive, do you have a come back or do you just stay quiet and be proud that you care enough about your babies to dress them and groom them? Do you ever feel offended by other people's comments? |
Some people don't even think dogs belong indoors. Just ignore them, they're just jealous and wish they were as stylish and spoiled as your dogs ;) |
(((HUGS))) I'm really sorry that people have been rude to you about this! But yes, it's happened to me a lot unfortunately. People have said that I'm crazy or even stupid when I dress up my bby, because they think that she doesn't need clothes & that clothes are for humans, not dogs. I don't dress my bby up anymore because it's waaayyy too hot here for that, but when I lived in California I dressed my bby up all the time because it was FREEZING & she would be shivering like crazy if I didn't put a sweater on her. I have never said anything back to people who look down on me for dressing up my bby. I feel that they are not worth my time, & to be honest, I really do not care what they think. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so I just go about my way & let them think whatever they want. Even though people have been rude towards me dressing up my bby, this never deterred me from dressing her up. She looked cute & plus it was freezing, so they can just deal imo. It's not their dog, so I don't really understand why they care so much or why they feel the need to say something negative. I mean, if they don't have anything nice to say, then why even say it? It's just rude & unnecessary & do they honestly think that I'm going to listen to what a STRANGER says & stop dressing up my bby? I think not. Try not to take it personally & just ignore those people who think that you are crazy or stupid for dressing up your bbys. They're not worth your time :) Amy |
I didn't ask anyone's opinion when I got my babies and really could care less what they think now...people will always have something to say. Relish in the positive ones and ignore the ignorant ones. I don't think you need to explain yourself to anyone. ...wow just reread what I typed above...pms much? |
*sigh* i often feel offended. People think that the bows and clips in Layla's hair are ridiculous. They don't get that if that wasn't in her hair.. her hair would be in her face all day... so while it is practical... i try and make it as cute as possible. And the clothes *sigh* Layla usually only wears clothes in the winter and goes naked in the summer.. but again.. people dont' get that clothes .. in the winter... in ontario... are NECESSITY! i get so tired of defending it i just smile now.... |

Luckily, it happens VERY rarely. I just ignore them. It isn't worth my time. I just focus on the positive and try to give attention/feedback to those people. |
I don't get offended, whenever people make a comment on how I spoil my dogs I just remind them that they're not dogs, they're little humans with four legs and tails! Also, I'm very happy that I'm able to spoil my dogs, and happy for my dogs that they have an owner that loves them enough to spoil them so bad, so if someone else has a problem with it, oh well. |
well ,, lets see,, we get LOTS of looks,, and comments,, and stares,,but I dont ever recall having heard ANYONE make rude comments,, but then,, some of those who were STARING,, probably made some stupid comment,, but didnt have the nerve to say it where I could hear em!! (I STILL HAVE IT!!!!) LOL mostly people get a Real Smile out of our girls,, but I have had some friends who had NO IDEA you'd KEEP Dogs In the House!! let the go to the bathroom IN THE HOUSE!!! now the clothes they thought was funny,, but the bathroom business!! they just had no idea you could Potty Train em like that!! I'm still amazed at the people who are amazed just because they have a BOW in their hair!! lol, ,i'm like well ,, yeah,, its a YorkieGirl!!! ;) so sorry if folks are rude to you,, just ,, ,consider the source,, some folks just can't help their ignorance! ;) |
Awe, that would be so sad to hear someone make such a rude comment about a furbaby.:( I know this wasn't the right thing to do but I get offended when people say things about our furkids and I stand up for them just as I do our skin kids. Some years back we lived on a dead end road that went back through a golf course, I was walking out white boxer boy Isaiah on the dead end road and some guy with about 6 of his buddies yelled out and said, oh my God, that's the ugliest dog I've ever seen in my life! He had to have been in their 50's and I was quite shocked at his manners. I tried to ignore them and just walk on but they all kept laughing and pointing. Finally I got mad and stopped and looked right at the man who'd said that about Isaiah and I replied, and YOU'RE the UGLIEST MAN I've ever seen in my life. His jaw darn near hit the ground and him and his buddies stopped laughing and just looked at me like, I can't believe she just said that! Some people just don't care who's feelings they hurt. But in response to your question, I've never had Maggy dressed and anyone say something like that. If I'm ever in that situation, I'd probably turn and look them in the eye and say, thank you for you opinion, now do you feel like a better woman or man for hurting someone elses feelings? There's no reason for such rudeness from people, if they don't like what our furkids wear, they don't have to look. |
I am sorry that you have gotten some negative comments. But I think that there is something wrong with them if they are worrying about how your dog is or isn't dressed;). I have gotten a few rude comments too in the past and now i just smile and tell them that I am not having anymore children so he is my baby. they can think that i am a little crazy but they can't really argue with it. |
I don't know if you heard about the Crazy Club, but it was founded because some people use to make fun of those who dressed their Yorkies. So instead of fighting or explaining themselves, they just embraced the idea, and called themselves "crazy". I absolutely loved this concept because it goes beyond dressing your dogs, it allows you to do what makes you happy, and as long as it isn't hurting anyone, people should keep their negative opinions to themselves. You're bound to get your share of stares in a town such as you describe, and while many people might think it's silly at first, I'll bet they secretly think it's cute as heck. I think I would try responding to their negative comments, with something like, I know, it's so silly, but I just can't help myself." Southern girls know how to do this naturally; I wish I was a Southern girl. |
Oh I don't care what people think. I always have Lacy and Rylie dressed up in coordinating outfits with their hair fixed. I even have a dog stroller that I'll take them shopping in. I don't really pay much attention to people when we pass, but usually if we get comments or stopped it's all good...people think it's cute and want to see them and ask about them, etc. I do live in a college town though in a townhouse complex of mostly college students so sometimes I get a few wierd comments, but I just tell myself they are stupid and immature... I'm proud to dress my dogs and have them cute...I actually feel sorry for the people that think it is silly as they are the ones missing out. I say do what makes you and your dogs happy and just ignore others. Everyone has something "wierd" about them...I guarantee you that those people that look at you wierd for dressing your dogs do something you'd consider wierd. |
I think they are all just jealous that they don't have our babies!!! lol! And they are missing out on all the fun and love Yorkies bring to whom they own ;) I personally would have to say something smarta$$ back to someone. I can let opinions go except when you say them to my face or my kids and try to hurt or humiliate us. Then watch out, cause your gonna get it right back atcha!!! ;) I really am a nice person though, lol! Just don't talk crap about my kids, skin and fur, cause Momma's only 1 step behind them backing them up all the way. :) hehe! |
Just tell them that "Opinions are like a**holes -- everybody's got one. And I am choosing to ignore yours on both counts." :D Seriously, don't let closed minds torment yours. |
One day recently I was in the dog park with Archie and a guy came in with a little bichon. Archie was dressed in his blue and red footbal jersey. The guy asked if Archie was a puppy. He was amazed to find that he was full grown. I complimented his dog, too, of course. But then he said "He's really cute ... wish he didn't have on that silly T-shirt, though." I just laughed and said, "Hey, he's in style," and walked away. I really could care less what people think about Archie's little shirts and hoodies. He's cuter than some people's kids! |

I love attitude tees for dogs. I'm getting one that says ''sorry bitches I'm fixed'' for my dogs when they get fixed, so people would stop asking me if they can breed my dogs with theirs [or ask to breed them so they can have a puppy] when I go places with my dogs  |
I figure it this way, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it all. S long that what I do with my dog, or kids, if I had any, is up to me-plain and simple.:) |

To the OP, I have personally never had anyone be rude to me about the way I dress my dog, but it's also more common where I live..If it's not as common in your area, though they shouldn't be rude to you, don't let it get to you. They just don't see things the same way the rest of us do and they don't know how to keep their opinions to themselves. |
why do people care its not there money my husband said something about a celeb on tv why would someone buy a lv bag for a dog i told him why do you care its not your money then my husband said your right :aimeeyork |
Some people just have to have something to complain about to distract themselves from reality. It really is sad how the saying "misery loves company" is so true. I really wonder how some people just can't see others happy or doing well. It's a true character flaw when people feel they have to attack what other people do when it's not even bothering them. If they spent as much effort on trying to change the things that are a real problem then maybe the world would be a better place. |
People have asked me why my girls are in dresses and how cute they are - I always tell them they are NOT in a fashion show - they're HARNESSES but most people smile when they see them - especially little girls ...The girls and I have groupies at my new apartment and I know them all by name now - they're really cute....all about 10-12 years old and ALL want yorkies now - and of course I try and talk them out of it and tell them to wait till they're older. |
If you and your baby are happy then don't let them bother you! I will say that I cheat... I let them make the comments about my lil Chi(Peanut) then ask them to turn around look behind them and tell DD's Ridgeback/Pitt cross(Denali) that her dress is stupid looking!:yelrotflm....hear the crickets chirping??? Denali MUST wear her outfits too and she also believes that her goal in life is to protect her "lil sister" Peanut! *sigh*:D Seriously tho- you aren't hurting anyone and besides IT'S FUN!! |

If you quit doing something because of someone's opinion, you'd never be able to do anything because no matter what, there's someone out there with an opposite view. I have the problem with my own family where my dad is a jerk when it comes to animals. To him they are property (he raised horses all his life...don't know if that has anything to do with it) and I know he can't stand that we just got a yorkie and she stays in the house and sleeps with us. But you know what? If he doesn't like it, he can stay home. However, if some clown ever insulted my dog, I would have no hesitation snapping back as I have an aggressive nature towards anyone who insults me or anyone in my family! Luckily for everyone else, nobody has made any negative comments towards Pumpkin. :D And take it from me, Gracie and Holly are adorable, no matter what anyone else says! |
I get the same attitude from people. I'm on the other end, I make some of the clothes that our pets wear. And people, even close to me like my best friends husband will say "Why do you make those! Why don't you go get a real job"! You know, I told him I like to make people happy! I like to make them smile...Besides what is a real job? |
Sticks and stones may break my bones.......:):):) |
