A thread to remind new owners of some dangers. I wanted to start a thread where experienced owners could give new owners some advice on things to watch out for with their new dogs. My first advice is this: I live in the country and my dogs go out to use the bathroom. I NEVER let them out of my sight and I always LOOK outside for potential problems before I let them out of my arms. That includes, looking up. Hawks and other birds of prey WILL catch small dogs and kill them. It happens way more often than people think. Also, yorkies are, by nature, hunters and will not run away from snakes. One bite from some of the snakes down here in South MS and your yorkie would be dead before you could get to the vet. |
If you have a pond in your yard even if it is just a tiny garden pond watch your furbabies around it and dont let them outside by themselves around it. The same if you have a pool. |
hey! thanks I live in the country to and was wonding about things like that. THANKS AGAIN good topic |
Wash Up!!!! wash all blankets, clothes, toys, and bedding before you let your yorkie touch it....never know what chemicals it has been treated with or how they will react. |
no greenies or rawhides or anything non digestable |
Good thread. As a new owner I will be watching this one closely. Last week I was peeling some onions and a couple of peels fell on the floor. Sasha was hovering around but I picked them up and discarded them before she got to them. Imagine my horror when I read the next day here on YT that onions were dangerous to yorkies! I had no idea at the time. I just didn't want her eating it. |
do not use collars on yorkies, use a harness instead |
Kalina almost choked to death on a round piece of rawhide the size of a quarter, so don't give them stuff like that. Peeka got his head stuck in a circle of rawhide. Let's try to post links to the posts that warn, if we can find them. Great thread - should be a sticky!! |
yes this should definitely be a sticky for sure.. for one thing it would save an animals life. |
Don't let your dog drink from puddles. Mine caught giardia last summer from a puddle. Also, watch that what you use on your grass and gardens is pet-safe. |
THANK YOU so much for this thread!!! I agree, make this one a sticky! I have had Suzi for 12 days.. I need as much helpful information as possible! I have a field behind where I live, and when it gets hot, all sorts of creatures come out of there. There are also these large owls that come out right before dark in the summer, I need to be very, very very careful. MY puppy stays inside, however, she will want to go out when older for walks and such. She will wear a harness too, and she has one already. She wil not be going out when it is hot , and I was not thinking about those owls either... I knew about the snakes, and trantulas though. |

i still wouldnt trust a collar |
I hope someone will answer about carpert deodorizer because I'm not sure. The other foods I read that were harmful to yorkies are mushrooms, chocolate, and macadamia nuts. Holiday plants like poinsettas aren't good for them either. |
raisins are very dangerous too |
No collar for Suzi either... She will learn to wear a harness .... I saw some collars though, and got that terribe feeling , that they are NOT a good thing for a small Yorkie or puppy. |
Always hold your Yorkie firmly. I have heard so many accounts where Yorkies have leaped out of the arms of an adult or child and got injured or killed. If you have an elderly person in your home or go visit the home of an elderly person be aware that many of them drop pills (medications) on the floor and your puppy or dog could eat one of those pills. |
sophie wears collars when i am home, and i take them off when i'm not. as far as small collars, i found some at petsmart, wal mart or even ebay. the one's she has do not cause problems, however the one she had managed to get into her mouth is in the garbage now. |
Never put a collar on your yorkie. period. You can put ID tags on your harness. Furthermore, unless you are taking your dog out, there is no need to put anything on them. |

Ok here is my BEST piece of advice. Always teether your baby TO YOU! Leash him/her even when just going for a car ride. Ive heard stories of people carrying their babies and some guy tries to steal them from their arms... or another person claiming to want to pet the yorkie through the car window and trying to snatch it through the window. Or even worse, someone walking thier yorkie on a leash and getting knocked down and the yorkie stolen...Even if you are going to carry your baby still put a harness and leash on and tie it to your beltloop or something. If someone tries to take your dog and its tied to you, they won't waste the time (or are less likely to) to untie the leash or take off a harness (they might a collar though - another reason not to use a collar) |

what happens? do they choke? can i use something else to make a collar? :animal36 like a bandana... :animal-pa if i use a halter, can i leave it on? :confused:i need something for training..:):) |
Get some doggie stairs for your bed and your sofa and use them at all times. These little ones do NOT need to jump even though they can. |

I just wanted to say thank you everyone for this valuable information. I will be getting my Poppy next month and this information is what I needed! Great Posts!:thumbup::thumbup: |
Before you spay or neuter, make sure to have blood work ran before hand to help prevent any thing going wrong while their under. Also, make sure your vet uses the isoflourine. |
Great thread! When company is over pick your baby up or put them in a safe room/place, because guests don't know how to safely open and shut exterier doors so that your puppy can't slip out. Scan your floor constantly and pick up any choking hazards. Every time I look up Jamie has gotten ahold of SOMETHING he shouldn't have. |
When guests come over I am going to be too scared to let them hold my baby or be around him. I know my family is going to call me selfish but oh well! It is nice to know about the collars too .:thumbup: |
