make a rule that they must be sitting on the floor to hold your puppy:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:) |
Microchip your yorkie -- this may save their life do not feed your dog grapes - another dangerous food |
Read the sticky here about what NOT to feed your dog. Table scraps are not good, even if you homecook for your yorkie. There may be seasonings that could make them sick. Not a good idea to leave clothes on your yorkie when you're away from home. PLEASE supervise your yorkies while they are outside! It only takes a few seconds for them to get out of your yard, or even get stolen. If you live where there's a lot of wildlife, they especially need to be watched closely. Take good care of your yorkie's teeth. Teach "stay" and "come" commands early. Those two commands might save their life some day. |

Suzi is always finding "treasures" and thinking they are toys, goes in her mouth. I get so scared . She found a small earring in my room this morning, I got it though... i can't let her on my bed at night, it is too high. However, she sleeps right next to me on her bed. :aimeeyork |
When walking your yorkie out and about ALWAYS pick him/her up if another dog is near....even if they look friendly, DON'T risk it. Too many friendly looking dogs turn out to be aggressive and could seriously injure or kill a little yorkie baby. |
reclining chairs or sofa sections can be very dangerous. There has been at least one person telling of a yorkie being killed after being under the recliner when the foot rest was up and being killed when the foot rest was put down. :( |
thank you for this thread :) We want to keep all the babies safe...... For sure don't let your dog run free - where there are hawks and eagles. That is commonly thought of as an urban myth, but it is very real....and I know people who have lost their babies to big birds........ Not to repeat, this is just my biggest concern. Where I live there are alot of eagles. Beautiful creatures, but dangerous to our babies...... |

another good thing about the harness ,when your walking your yorkie, god forbid another dog goes to attack, you can just pick the dog up by the harness, if you had a collar, perhaps it wouldnt turn out so good.. it has happened to me once and my b/f once, we both were able to free my dog from any injuries that might have occured from a bigger dog.. |
If you have ID tags on your dogs, be careful not to put too much info. I once heard of someone's yorkie getting stolen because they saw the dog and owner in the park and stopped to talk. They got the address from the tag. Also be careful when taking pics to post on the internet that the tags don't show the info in the pics. |
Great tip! I was sitting in the car with Sophie and watching the kids play at a local park. It was super windy and I had a dress on so I thought it would be best for everyone if I stayed in the car ;). Sophie was wearing her new Puppia harness and leash. She jumped right out the window. If the leash wouldn't have been snugly wrapped around my arm she would have gotten hit. Quote:

I thought of something else. Use a comb to brush your puppy. I was only using a brush when Sophie was little and even though I thought I was doing great brushing every day her hair ended up all matted. |
Be very very careful getting in and out of a car if your yorkie is with you. Yorkies are super fast. A friend of mine lost her yorkie last year. Zoie was in the car with her and she jumped out to run into work to get something and Zoie jumped out just as she shut the door. Zoie died from head injuries. |

Speaking of doors, be careful opening doors at home also. If you have children, it might be a good idea to keep a baby gate at the door so that your yorkie can't run out when someone opens the door. |

Doors slamming shut in your home due to the wind is another hazard..almost happened to my Pixie a few weeks back, my son opened the front door to someone when the backdoor was open which caused a wind that slammed the kitchen door shut..Pixie was just a few steps away from the door...I shudder to think what could have happened if she had been walking through it...boy was i mad with my son! |
Be very careful when you are walking your yorkie (or any dog), especially when you are in a driveway, parking lot or garage or anywhere that anti-freeze or brake fluid may have leaked from a car. Also, do not let them sniff around empty containers. They find it very tasty....the attached link is worth a read. http://www.2ndchance.info/antifreeze.ht |
thanks Didn't know about the rawhide. Thanks. I'm not experienced, but the other day I found sammy licking the water from the saucer my plants were sitting in. So that might be one to watch also. I removed the saucer by the way. Also watch the dogs inthe yard to make sure they don't eat mulch or grass. Sammy got really sick once from eating mulch and it was very scary. |

I just got a collar for my little girl. I would never walk her in it because we have a harness for that but last month she got out because the backdoor didnt shut right. Of course she had no id tags. Luckily my neighbor found her. They only saw her once. She is microchipped now. I am too afraid to put her collar on when I am not home but I dont know what to do when she gets out. She has to have her rabies, dog licence, and id info. By the time you get all that on, her head in practically dragging from all the weight. HELP !!!! Good thread though. I have had GiGi over a year and I didnt know she couldnt eat Onions!!! She ate chocolate once and I nearly had a heartattack!! I am teaching my youngest child to stop feeding her except treats but of course she is a little hoover vaccuum!!! Thanks for all the advice |

And here is my link to Kalina's near death experience. It was the most frightening moment of my life. DO NOT GIVE THESE TREATS TO YOUR LITTLE DOGS!! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...mokehouse.html |
This should be a sticky! lot of great info.Just like our own children little things could be tragic. Doing little things can make all the difference. What about makin sure all electric wires are out of sight tied up where they cant chew on them.unplug any extras, maybe like a fan.If have axcess to extra bathroom keep door shut.(Keep comode seat down.) |
when I first joined YT, I remember a memebers yorkie ate a penny. Pennies contain zinc and that is very bad. Be sure that any change is picked up. I find quite a bit of loose change around the house. |
Here is a good website that list the plants and foods that are toxic to dogs. Toxic Foods and Plants for Dogs |
You cannot let them play with long yarn, ropes, leashes , dental floss etc. unsupervise. One of my yorkie named zoey got a hold of one and tangled herself under a chair, the thread got wrapped around her body and her neck. She couldn't breath. If I wasn't home that day she could have died. :( I was so scared . |
petsmart I found a collar for my 7 week old Poco at petsmart. Its a nylon woven type without holes in it. You can tighten it to any size because of this function--the metal piece just goes through the weaving wherever you want. It fits nice and snug on Poco with the recommended 2-finger leisure. And it was cheap too! Only 2.99. Michelle:dogzzz: |

Collars can damage the trachea of a yorkie and even cause death. At least never walk a yorkie with a collar and leash - always use a harness. Plus lots of people can tell you horror stories of having a collar get caught on something and yorkies have even died this way. If you have to have a collar - get a cat collar known as a break-away collar |
