| Coats? I'm always reading about post puppy coats and adult coats or when adult coats start coming in. What's the difference between a puppy coat and an adult coat? Is it the color? Because Meeko changed color at about 3 months. Is it the texture? I'd love that! His hair is curly and always flipping up. I'd love him to grow a silky coat. Is there another difference?

| When Yorkie pups are born, their coat is short, slick and hugging the skin. Think of a teeny-tiny Rottweiler. After a few weeks, the coat fluffs but still has basically the newborn coloring. As the adult coat comes in, it intermingles with the fluffier puppy coat. During this time, the hair can mat easily with the hair clumping with the puppy down. As you comb them, you'll see the down that comes out. As the puppy ages, the down continues to loosen and come out and what you're left with is basically the adult coat. You can get an estimate of the pup's eventual color by the amount of silver breaking through the black on its back at about 3 months. On most Yorkies, the color on the back will lighten from the black but some do stay black or the color may lighten to a platinum blonde color (and any shade in between). The breed standard calls for a dark steel blue color. |
