I need advice now!?!? Honest opinions Please!! Ok so I want to get my puppy Microchipped and my husband wants to take him today to do it. A local shelter does them pretty cheap. I just dont know if we should do it now or we should wait till he's older. He will be 10 weeks old on Saturday. I need everyones advice on if I should let my husband take him today or not. Please tell me your honest opinions...I dont want my baby at risk of anything. Is there any risk to this? Is it going to hurt him? Is he going to act funny afterwards? Any information is appreciated along with honest opinions!! If I take long to write back its because I am at work and cant be on constantly. But please keep commenting!! |
I had my two boys microchipped when they were under anesthesia for their neutering - the needle to put in the chip is pretty big:eek: |
stormy was 10 weeks when I got her microchipped. I also used a shelt to. $20 is worth it to be a little more at eased incase she gets lost. |
Wait until you neuter him and/or have his teeth cleaned. The needle is big, and there is no need to put this little guy under stress so young. Just make sure he wears his harness with an ID tag on it all the time, with his name/telephone # on it. |
Lily got it done when she was spayed because the vet said it was such a big needle it would hurt her. |

I am doing the microchipping of my puppies when they are 8 to 12 weeks old depending on their size . They are all doing very well . |
Personally, I would not be taking a 10 week old puppy into any shelter - the risk is to big for catching something and the needle is large and can be painful so it is kinder to wait until you have him neutered or teeth cleaning. |
I always take my puppies at 8 weeks old , never had a problem at all, and they have never cried more or less than with regular vaccinations. Yes it is a bigger needle and microchip is of the sz of a piece of rice and sometimes we get scared because of the look of the needle but supposely it hurts the same as any other shot .......my puppies have never acted with more pain at all, just a little cry as the needle goes in and some brave little ones don't even cry at all.........3 seconds and they are done. |
I've always had my pets microchipped the first time they visit the vets, none of them have ever even flinched! The needle is similar to type used in hospitals when setting up a drip/giving blood. They don't bother me but I'm sure some people think they're awful! I know people who have had small pets done ferret kits,baby rabbits and such and they have been fine also. We are waiting until Tink is spayed at 6 mths. (another month to go) Does anyone know of a dog being found - given back to owner due to having the chip? |
Both mine were chipped while they were under for spaying. They never showed any sign that they even know it is there. I have heard they may let out a little yelp sometimes because it is a little painful. |
I am still debating if I should take him now or wait....I dont want Bandit in pain but I've lost a pet before and I wish I had done it because I may have gotten him back. Matty Lu was microchipped at 10 weeks without anesthesia. Anesthesia is not good unless they are being neutered, which I agree is a good time to have it done. However, although the needle is big, it is also incredibly sharp and the jab is quick and not too painful for them. I would have it done. Matty was only 1 pound when she was microchipped and she was fine. :) Good luck. |
