Does anyone have a large yorkie? My mother has a 4 month old yorkie that is almost 7 pounds. When she saw the vet today she told my mom that she didn't believe that her dog was a purebred yorkie because a purebred would never be that big and because his ears aren't standing up. My mom is very upset and is now questioning if the breeder lied to her about the puppy. The puppies parents were only 3 and 6 pounds. The breeder estimated that the puppy she sold my mom would be about 6-7 pounds full grown. This was obviously not the case. I also bought a yorkie from the same breeder but from a different litter- my female is 3 1/2 months old and 2.6 pounds. I really like the breeder and she still calls me to see how the puppies are- do I say anything to the breeder or is the vet wrong in accusing her of misrepresenting her AKC yorkie puppies? I know I have heard of other yorkies being larger than the standard 3-7 pound range- does that mean that if they are bigger, they are not purebred?????? Also, if he is 7 pounds at 4 months- how big will he get? |
he's probably a purebred, my first yorkie was i believe around 15lbs and had floppy ears, too. some get bigger than others, even if the parents are tiny. if he's 7lbs at 4 months, he'll probably get pretty big, but then your mom will have more to love:) |
Yep! Many of us on here have larger, purebred Yorkies. Mine are 10 and 11lbs. |
Some do get big, I myself have an AKC male that is getting close to 19 lbs, of course hes over weight but he is a large yorkie. After we neutered him he got fatter. But we love him no matter how big he is. And honestly its not really any of the vets business how big her yorkie is, He needs to vet it and stop worrying about its size. |
welllll, My Tootie is ALL Yorkie and he is a wonderful 16 lbs! His ears dont stand up and he doesnt have long hair but he is the BESTEST BUDDY in the world! yorkie weight my sister has one that is akc and 19lbs. overweight, but purebread. mine has maxed out as 3.2 |
Both mine are yorkie through and through. Alphy is almost 3 and 10lbs and Murphy is almost 5 months and 8lbs 12 oz. |
Yorkies can get to be upwards of 20 pounds. There has always been both flop and prick eared Yorkies. The growth chart says to double the weight at 12 weeks for a good estimate of the adult weight. If the breeder held the puppy for 12 weeks, she should have been able to give a fairly accurate adult size, but some dogs defy the growth chart. The vet may not be very knowledgeable about Yorkies and how much they can vary. How old and how big was the pup when your Mom got him? You could ask the breeder about this but don't assume the worst. Some Yorkies grow fast and top out at a young age and that may be the case here. Also, no matter what size the parents were you can always have a throw back to another relative. You know...like a red headed child or one that's taller than the others or has a bigger nose...sometimes you can see something of grandparents, aunts or uncles in them. If she wants the ears up she'll have to have the hair shaved from them and possibly do some taping...that may help. At 4 months the pup is teething too so the ears will go up and down until they are done. Bottom line is this...if your Mom loves her Yorkie she shouldn't worry about the size...after all, it's the love that matters! |
First of all, if I were your mother, I would find a new vet. I'm thinking most vets should know that a standard yorkie is 4-7lbs, some smaller, some bigger, and are PURE Yorkie. I have a yorkie that is going to be larger than 7lbs and has floppy ears and is pure yorkie. Is the vet going to constantly say that everytime your mom brings her in for a visit?...I hope not! Tell her to join here...she'll see plenty like hers.....and they're all PUREBRED! ;) |
Her Yorkie was 10 weeks old when she got him Thanks for all the reponses! My mom got her yorkie at 10 weeks and he was almost three pounds. At that time the breeder estimated he would be about 7 pounds. She was not looking for a tiny yorkie. She definately got more than she bargained for! She loves him to death but the vet really upset her when she told her that large yorkies are not purebred. I told my mom to join yorkietalk. I love this website and I love hearing from everyone about their yorkies! |
Lexie is a year and a half and 14.5 lbs. I was told she'd be 7-8 lbs. Well, she just kept growing. I think she finally hit a plateau. She still sits on my lap and I can pick her up. I just can't carry her in a purse -- maybe a suitcase. But she is very sturdy, beautiful, and smart. I love every ounce of her. |
My vet did the same thing. "Are you sure he is a purebred," he asked, eyeing Storms' floppy ears. I have papers, so yes, I said. I saw the mom and dad, so yes, I said. "Yorkies are usually 4 pounds or smaller," he says, nearly turning Storm upside down to look at his rounded puppy belly. So, yes, I am looking for a new vet. I will finish my vaccinations at this vet, but then we are moving on. Storm is 15 weeks tomorrow, and last Saturday he was 6.5 pounds. Mom was 4 and dad was 5. I would rather he not be close to 20 pounds, simply because he sleeps in the bed with me and he takes enough room as it is at 6 pounds...but I wanted a "bigger" yorkie...I have 2 boys, and I knew I needed one that could play a little rough and not get hurt so easy. |
Both of mine are teapots and we love it Faith is 13lbs as of today and Yoda is 12lbs and they are all yorkie. I've had people comment on there size too, but we just ignore them their parent were smaller (mom was 6 and dad was 5) so it happens. Yorkie just come in a variety of sizes. |
I also forgot to mention that the puppy is young enough that she can tape the ears so that they stand up if she doesn't want floppy ears it usually works in my case with a name like Yoda his ears had to stand up so we helped them along with gauze and masking tape. |
