My first baby (Gizmo) is 15 lbs currently. I love having a larger yorkie because you don't have to worry about his health as much, and he is akc registered. :)

My vet did the same thing. "Are you sure he is a purebred," he asked, eyeing Storms' floppy ears. I have papers, so yes, I said. I saw the mom and dad, so yes, I said. "Yorkies are usually 4 pounds or smaller," he says, nearly turning Storm upside down to look at his rounded puppy belly.

So, yes, I am looking for a new vet. I will finish my vaccinations at this vet, but then we are moving on. Storm is 15 weeks tomorrow, and last Saturday he was 6.5 pounds. Mom was 4 and dad was 5. I would rather he not be close to 20 pounds, simply because he sleeps in the bed with me and he takes enough room as it is at 6 pounds...but I wanted a "bigger" yorkie...I have 2 boys, and I knew I needed one that could play a little rough and not get hurt so easy.

I'd be looking for a new vet too! 4 lbs or smaller?!?! He has no idea what the standard even is!

Size Dosn't matter

My previous Yorkies were always small. When I got HazelNut, she was sapose to be about six pounds or so according to the breeder, MOther 5, father small, don't remember. Well, she's not quite a year old and she 8 pounds plus. She is so much fun, I can walk her, run with her, play a litlle rougher, she is small boned but not as fragile as the previous pups. She's a beautiful little dog, and honestly, I could care less that she is not 5 ponds. Sometimes there ears come up later. I had a portrait painted of a pst pup, the artist wanted to paint it with both the pups ears up, I said no, as that wasnt how she was. Well, not so long after the painteing was done, her ears came up. Be happy you have a healthy dog, adn love it to death.

The parents are 4 and 5 lbs.

Does this mean she is going to be a larger yorkie?

Im guessing she will be about 6-7lbs

Preston went to the vet 4 days ago and weighed 13.3 lbs. When he was spayed the first week of March, he weighed 12.2. He is 10 months old. I love the fact that he is bigger because we also have a clumsy 39lb Basset who thinks Preston is her own personal play toy. They can get playing pretty rough sometimes, and Preston always comes back for more. He is pretty sturdy for a small dog. I wouldn't change his size for anything!

Some Yorkies grow fast and top out at a young age and that may be the case here. Also, no matter what size the parents were you can always have a throw back to another relative.

The vet officially diagnosed 5.5kg (12lb) Dougal as a throwback. LOLz Everyone always asks me what happened to him! I just say I loved him too much and he grew and grew. :P

luvinmyyorkies 05-20-2008 06:28 AM

I've always had larger yorkies, except one that was 5lbs. The sweeties that I have now are 11.3 lbs., 10 lbs., and Max at 6lbs at 9 months. There is absolutely no fat on any of them, just solid yorkie! My vet says they are in great shape!:D

My yorkie is one of the most wonderful dogs in the world (to me) and I wouldn't take a million dollars for him and he weighs 10 lbs. He is AKC registered and my vet said he was the perfect size for his build. He has never said anything about him being big or anything. Her vet was out of line. As long as the dog is healthy and happy and your mother is happy with him that is all that matters.

I have a teapot too and i wouldn trade him for the world !

First off I want to welcome you and your mom to YT. ;) Next, tell your mom to find another Vet. because a reputable Vet. would never say things like that to anyone. It does't sound like she has any knowledge about Yorkies. They DO come in all sizes. The original Yorkies were around 20 pounds, and at that time ladies were wanting little lap dogs, so the breed started being altered to breed smaller and smaller. Even today people are wanting 1 and 2 pound Yorkies. I think it's a big mistake.
My Zada was 2 pounds at 4 months, and now she is a healthy 10 pound 3 years, 5 months old. My Azrael was 3 pounds at 7 months and now at 3 years, 4 months, weighs over 8 pounds. My Razael was only 2 pounds at 4 months and is now over 5 pounds at 8 months. So you see, they can end up a larger size Yorkie even if they are tiny at 2, 3, or 4 months of age.
All of here at YT that have big or small fur-kids are totally in love with them. They are our "kids" for sure!!!

When she saw the vet today she told my mom that she didn't believe that her dog was a purebred yorkie because a purebred would never be that big and because his ears aren't standing up. My mom is very upset and is now questioning if the breeder lied to her about the puppy. The puppies parents were only 3 and 6 pounds. The breeder estimated that the puppy she sold my mom would be about 6-7 pounds full grown. This was obviously not the case. I also bought a yorkie from the same breeder but from a different litter- my female is 3 1/2 months old and 2.6 pounds. I really like the breeder and she still calls me to see how the puppies are- do I say anything to the breeder or is the vet wrong in accusing her of misrepresenting her AKC yorkie puppies? I know I have heard of other yorkies being larger than the standard 3-7 pound range- does that mean that if they are bigger, they are not purebred?????? Also, if he is 7 pounds at 4 months- how big will he get?

Your vet obviously doesn't know what he is talking about, if you read up on Yorkie History and the dogs that were bred together to come up with the yorkie breed you will see that originally they bred these dogs to be atleast 30pounds.

"In 1872, the Yorkshire Terrier was introduced into the United States, and was recognized by the AKC in 1878. But it wasn’t until the 1930’s that the Yorkshire Terrier took on its modern look. It is important to note that the Yorkshire Terrier up until the 1930’s usually weighed approximately 30 pounds, not the 3 to 7 pounds it does today."

So I would say your mother has an original yorkie if anything.

Does anyone have a large yorkie?

It is not only yorkies size that can be unpredictable but also other breeds. When I got my bichon, Barney, I met both parents who were approx. 18 pounds. Well, Barney is a whopping 32 pounds. I have had him for 15 wonderful years and I would not change a thing about him. He has been one of the most loving dogs I have ever owned.
