| Hello! We just got our Yorkie today. I wasn't planning on getting one until next month but DH brought one home as a surprise for Mother's Day today. I am thrilled but nervous. I'm trying to figure out quickly how to train her etc. I thought I would have a bit more time. I am thinking that we will crate train her and use some type of litter box with the pee pads. It's all a bit overwhelming but I'm so excited to have her and of course the kids are thrilled beyond belief. Any "first day" hints or advice would be much appreciated! Everything is so new right now! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Hi welcome to Yorkietalk. I agree I think crate training is the best idea too. When they are small the crate needs to be rather small or they will just pee on one side and sleep on the other. I would take Joey out probably two times at night and set him on a pee pad in the bathroom. I use to set the pee pad on a large tray, but he really never got use to it, so I'm not sure you'll have much luck with a litter box, although some people do. Be patient, yorkies are harder to train than many breeds, maybe because their bladder is so small. I found washable pee pads worked better because he seemed to like to play with the disposable ones. I don't know how old your children are, but I know yorkies sometimes get scared with quick jerky movements that children make. Remember too that puppies love to chew and their puppy teeth are extremely sharp, and they will sometimes bite. If this happens, it's best to say, "no" and give them a suitable toy to chew on.

| Welcome and congratulations! You must be having such a great time with your new baby. I think you're on the right track with the crate and a pee pad. My Yorkie is almost 6 months now and I am still crating her. I also used the pee pad for awhile, as that's what she was used to with her parents. You have to show us pictures and let us know when you have named your baby. What a fantastic MD gift idea...that would have been a gift of all time for me! Major brownie points.
