I couldn't afford to spends thousands on vets bills but I can afford monthly insurance payments! Thats the whole point of pet insurance! I don't know how it works in the US, but I have life long insurance which means they will continue to pay out for the same illness/injury for as long as needed (the dogs whole life if necessary!) upto a value of approx $15.000 per illness/injury! I pray I will never need to make such a claim but I have peace of mind! |
I agree with the op. I could never afford to pay thousands for a yorkie. Murfee cost $500 from a flea market. He was a gift from my son and daughter in law. He has been very healthy and is a beautiful baby. I had him for 3 years before I found YT. I didn't know that maybe we shouldn't have bought him at a flea market. It took me a long time before I got up the nerve to say anything about where I got him here on YT. I was so afraid of getting slammed.:( I think there should be yorkies in the price range of the average person who just wants a pet, not to show, just to love. |

In Toronto... PJ's (god I hate that store) Sell there Yorkshire $3000-$4000 ($2000 on sale when older). That is what I call a rip off!!!! They attract people with there monthly payment... but if you haven't paid by 12 months!! oh boy they scam you with 20% interest... :thumbdown As a breeder myself... I can tell you that breeding is very costly (when you spoil the babies and spend time with them the way I do anyway:D). I think the price you sell your puppies at is a personal decision. I sell my dogs starting at $1000 + I think it is fair... but again.. it is a my personal believe. By the way my dogs aren't show dogs.... obviously show/breeding quality should sell for more... But $3000-$4000 for a dog from puppy mills WTF... I really hate PJ's...and any other pet store that sell dogs other than rescue one. When they said You Get What You Paid For... bahhhh...Not always..... that is for sure!!! |

thank you for saying that. I probably will never be in the position to get another - and if breeders all started doing this - ALOT of people would have to go with another breed. There are MANY GOOD HOMES OUT THERE THAT don't have 'wealth' and while I'm working for a living now - I still know if I WANTED to - I could get another and be ok with the vet bills etc because I'm saving each time I get a paycheck. while I'm content with my 2 girls - a little puppy in the future is such a nice thought....but at this time - a dream only....BUT - if all breeders got on the money-wagon & charged outrageous prices - it would be an IMPOSSIBLE dream. which really sucks. |

No offense the lady that originally bought my stormy paid 600 for her and she is a beautiful pup that is healthy and happy and very energetic:rolleyes: |
I dont often get involved in these kind of threads, but.....that is an UGLY statement (and so untrue!) if i ever heard one!!!!!!!!!! |
I never understand those that publically say how much they spent for their dog because I wouldn't do that. I didn't pay for either one of my yorkies actually...one was a gift and the other was a gift for my sister (although I now have him). But i do know how much both cost. They were both very inexpensive so far as yorkies go. Lacy was found out of the newspaper classifieds. Are they ugly? No. But are they good representations of the breed? No, not at all. They were bred without a second thought to quality and health. Thank God they are healthy, except for their luxating patellas, which luckily don't bother them currently. I feel SO fortunate they haven't had any major health problems considering they came from BYBs. And I love them to death...they are my world..and I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world...they are perfect to me and I love them. But I know my dogs came from backyard breeders, and I know they are poor examples of the breed. There are plenty of yorkies in the Dallas Morning News classifeds for less than $600, but they are from backyard breeders and are poor quality puppies. My next dog will come from a reputable show breeder...it is important to me to have a quality, wonderful example of the breed...on that looks like a yorkie should look, and one that was bred with health in mind. And I know I'll have to pay a good amount for that, and it's worth it to me to buy from a reputable breeder. |
Whoa !!! There comes a time where some things just don't need to be written or said. There's many people who did NOT pay a ton of money (me being one of them) - that I'm sure are pretty offended by that blanket statement..... Sure they are breeders throwing 2 dogs together - but that has nothing to do with this thread. The thread is about being a little nicer to someone on a budget. GOD - with the soaring economy and the cost of living - it must be SO nice to make so much money off the backs of your dogs... sorry - but your statement was snobbish and in general - just mean. We all can't have showdogs - and I DO agree there are too many people breeding - but to call these dogs 'ugly and unsound' is just mean. This site is too big for comments like that.... |
Personally I see it this way: It's not always about how much you can spend, but how much you are willing to spend. Just as I could with my current financial situation easily spend $10,000 on a pair of shoes I could spend $10,000 on a yorkie, but that doesn't mean I will. I think people misinterpret people's declaired price range. Just cause someone says they want to try and find a yorkie for $800 doesn't mean that $800 is all they have to spend on one. They may very well have looked at their expenses, income, etc and decided this is the best number so that they CAN afford all the other expenses that come along with owning a yorkie. They may have thousands in the bank in an account specifically for their yorkies care. The bottom line is, we all just need to be careful about what conclusions we jump to. Thus, the money a person wants to spend on the purchase of a puppy does not always equal the amount of money the person has. |
2 Attachment(s) I think my $500 flea market dog is really cute and not ugly at all. |

I think high income and low income families can do it - if they want to. Some have the $ for yorkies, and don't take care of them. $ doesn't make a good pet owner........ I think in some cases ALL PETS should be expensive, so that you have to THINK and have an investment in your pet so you don't just neglect them and dump them. My heart breaks for all the pet owners that don't care......... But it is true - that FREE makes for less attentive owners at times, not always..... |

PS: I paid the high price for my baby, got the papers etc......and oh my goodness, she's not show material! No perky ears, coat didn't follow suit, and I'm sure other things aren't right. But I love her to pieces......and had she have been $200 or $1250 like I paid. I can't imagine that someone would have been disappointed in her, having spent all the money. But by golly, someone that wanted a show dog would have been. We can't account for some people out there.............. YAY TO ALL THE YORKIES LOVERS...!!! |

Really it takes all kinds to make the world go round and I have to say I have seen some serious ignorance in this thread....not going to call out the person because we all see and hear that person loud and clear. Spending a ton of money doesn't necessarily mean you will get the best damn dog you can...lots of supposed top notch breeders can have a different side to them as well. We saw that not so long ago with a breeder that was on here that was revered and there was another side to her and a couple very bad experiences for some people here on YT. There are lots of expensive breeders that sell dogs that are not what would be fully considered the best representation of the standard...the popularity of the yorkie breed has dictated the way the market has gone as far a pricing. I have also seen several breeders that charge decently and their dogs are way better representations of the breed than those big sellers. So as with anything it's buyer beware and do your homework. Anyhow that being said....I paid less than $1200 for each of my girls and that was with their ship. Granted her breeder and I had become friends but it was still a good price and she regularly sells her pups for decent prices and works with a family if she sees that they are a good match for her babies. She is not a show breeder nor is she a puppy mill. She might be labled a back yard breeder by some of the overly zealous and rather opinionated folks on here but you know what....at the end of the day I have gotten two healthy girls from this person. She may not do all the millionss of testing that people suggest but her lines are healthy and sound. I wouldn't turn back the clock for a minute. I really do think that people need to step back and think about how they are posting something. You can have an opinion but try to not be nasty getting your point or opinion across. For greeders that only care about receiving the most for their dog and see it as a second income and not something done for the greater good ...well what goes around comes around. People will get the word out about you, your practices and prices and it will curb your market some. YT is so not the place to come on and show your true side because we will spread the word and it will definitely put a hurt on your business...we have done it in the past. Knowledge and and the YT grapevine goes a long way. |
