Sticker burrs in fur. Ugh...this is an everyday battle for me. We love to take Abbey out for long walks in the woods behind my apartment, but she like to go off the path and always comes in with a ton of sticker burrs matted in her fur. They were really bad tonight! There were 4 stuck in good under her neck, tons on her legs, and some even on her face. She crys when we try to pull them out, but we have to!! Some are so bad I have to cut them off. Does anyone else have this same problem?? What do you recommend? I need a way to get them out by not hurting her and also learn how to prevent them. As I write this Abbey is yelping as her Daddy pulls out burr after burr. Poor baby! |
I know this sounds stupid, but what are sticker burrs? Are they sharp, and does it hurt your baby? |
Yeah I was wondering if people would know what they are. They aren't sharp they are just little tiny things that stick to you. And for Abs, they get stuck in her hair. |
that happens to use too....now what i have noticed that if i spray conditioner spray on him like just before we go for walks...they come out A LOT easier...so try that. it helps in letting them slide out, also they seem to not stick so bad. it might not work for you but it does for us. also when i am pulling the one or two out gently i spray more conditioner stuff on it. (you can get it at petco, petsmart walmart) anywhere really its just conditioner spray for dogs. it helps a lot with tangles too. good luck...post back if it helps! |
Gizmo has learned to be still while I gently pull the hair from each side of the burr, then it slips out. If there are some really bad ones, I either cut them out or they just fall out very easily in the bath. Where we live the burrs are very pointy and do hurt. While out walking if Giz starts lifting his feet I scoop him up and head for home. Dang burrs, my dad said to get some Weed B Gone and spray the sticker patches in our yard. It kills everything but the grass. Just kind of leary. Good luck! I also hate it when he comes home with pollen looking pods stuck all over him...a gift from the neighbors. |
Omg I'm glad you posted this - I moved recently into an apartment and there are burrs here too !! I never had this problem with my yard ...if and when I'd find a little 'burr' plant I used to pull them right up .....I can't do that here cause I can't even find them :( I avoid the known places here that has them and the girls walk mostly on the sidewalks - I'm hoping burrs go OUT Of season soon so they can walk on the grass again. I do the same as Gizmos mom- seperate the hair 1st then gently pull them out but they ARE Sharp ....I always check first under the arms or on their little tummies - those need to come out right away - I stepped on one and it felt like needles...not to mention - one cut my fingers when I first moved in. Back when the girls had a bunch of them - I retraced my steps mentally and no longer walk that way - within a few weeks I pretty much figured out which spots are full of them and what isn't... but I still check my girls every day before I leave for work These nasty things HURT. |
I battle this everyday here too....cept we get the tiny lil green ones and the flat brown ones and man r they a pain! cond works but only to a point for us so I just have to sit & pick in shifts lol GL and happy pickin!:p |

We have this problem too. :( We had to cut Gizmo's hair down horribly about a week ago because he had over a 100! I'm not kidding! It was awful. We also try to avoid areas with stickers, but that is almost impossible around here. Thanks for the conditioner tip. I'll try that. |

Not the prettiest cut she ever had but I can SEE if she gets burrs rather than feel them now....I even took 2 inches off her braid |
they are a bummer! and why is it that the dogs get them all the time but no one can find the plant? lol. i just give her a bath and pull them out when she is lathered up. |

this happens every time she goes out at SO's house. without fail. She doesnt like them pulled but i spray her with the same spray i use to brush her with and then brush em out. this seems to work pretty well but its still a two person job for me bc shes rather uncomfortable until they are out. she will try to "help" to get them out (tries to bite it out) |
We're heading to Galveston next week, and the babies always get them there! I pay especially close attention to their little paw pads. They can get stuck there and that's gotta hurt! Glad someone mentioned the conditioner or cowboy magic; I'll for sure bring those along.:D |
Tatums gets them too but the ones we have are the little clover burrs. They are not sharp - kinda flat and soft. I do the same as above and just pull the hair away from it and they come out easily. I just chalk this up to one of the pains of living in the country. ;) I'm very glad we don't have the sharp ones! |

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!! It's a bummer that so many of our babies have this issue. I seriously DON'T know exactly where she is going to get them, but it really seems that when the BF takes her out, she comes back worse than usual. Even right now she has some in her armpits and I'm waiting for Chris to get home to take them out bc I can't stand hearing her yelp!! Right after work I am heading to Petsmart to get some spray on conditioner to try that out. It really seems like it will work like a charm, thanks for the excellent idea, HOT POD!!! |
They are a pain in the you know what. Chachi get them on him also. I spray a little detangler on them and work them out with my fingers |
We have this problem from time to time and have found that if you use some Baby Powder on the fur it helps to loosen up the sticker burr from the coat...with having show dogs I have to be really careful not to break their coats and heard that this is the best way to get them out. You may have to use alot of Baby Powder and work it into their coat, but with some tender care, the burrs will come out!! |
i have this problem all my babies have long caots and they always get them. |
HAH! To the original poster of this thread.....take a look at one of my blogs that I posted a couple of weeks ago. We feel your pain. :p http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/blo...nightmare.html |

If it ever happens again where they get covered in them, I will definitely try using some spray conditioner as I do have some. I don't know why I never thought of that the last time  Stupid me! Most of them I was able to get out just by losening the hairs, but a few of them were SO stuck that I had to actually cut them out with a pair of scissors  Geez, I will never for get that night...it really WAS a nightmare, lol! |

Lacy and Rylie get them too...Rylie has a thick cottony coat that is like a magnet for everything. I don't think the stickers are hard to get out of their hair at all though. It just takes me a couple minutes of pulling them out or combing them out to get them. I can't imagine them actually getting matted in unless the dog was already matted or they were left there for a long while. |

It may be a negative to living in the country, but the country is always so peaceful (we used to live in the country as well). By the way, that view of yours sounds fabulous! :) |

Maddie gets them all the time too  We call them hitchhikers and I hate them!!! They are so hard to get out, even if you do it as soon as your walk is over! I'm gonna try the leave in conditioner idea! |
