I love the Amish but those of us in Ohio have always know that their dog breeding has been very questionable. Joan and Crystal

There is a gal in North Benton that had her yorkies in a barn with her horses and they froze in the winter - the straw certainly was not enough. She never sent papers to the people who were promised them because if the AKC ever knew how many litters she had a year they would have had a fit. She had more law suits against against her than anyone in Deerfield (previous address) and they have yet to close her down. I was out there once and got sick but the good news is that this one in Nashville got closed down. She had a big ad in dog world and gave a 5 year guarantee and if anyone ever looked good it was her. She sent the same pictures and tape to everyone and charged $2000 and got it. She claimed she had a strong pedigree that everyone wanted and since she was way out not many were to her house. She met people half way sometimes and did alot of shipping. I guess she had law suit after law suit also but she was still getting rich. Anyway they rescued 230 sick and I can't go into how sick those poor babies were or I'll get sick again. That one took a long time . She wasn't arrested until 520 days after they took the dogs. Go Figure!!!! She will never be allowed to breed anything again. Joan and Crystal

That is SO sad I would love to get a yorkie with papers one day but after reading all these articles I think I will stick to adopting my puppies from the RSPCA or Dog's trust. That article is so sad he said he would bring the fresh air in from use of a fan!!?? These babies will NEVER see daylight!!??? Never see the sun?? Never touch foot on the grass or get to roll in it? The puppies are going to be whelped on a rubber mat. Even in the wild animals nest creating a place of comfort for their babies to be born. Puppy Mills need to be stopped and there it is being supported by the government. So sad...

| This is a copy of the letter I just sent... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: Heather@MillBusters.com To: ledger@allaroundphilly.com Sent: Thursday, July 28, 2005 9:20am Subject: Outraged American To whom it may concern, I am outraged at what i've just read. Your state is allowing yet ANOTHER puppy mill to be built. Do you not know what goes on in these places, or do you not care? Lancaster county is KNOWN for amish puppy mills and the abuse they inflict upon animals. Those poor dogs will be shoved in cages and forced to give birth to litter after litter until they die. The only reason for this is greed! None of these "puppy mills" care about their dogs. They just use them to make a buck. Would it be legal if someone adopted 50-70 children, and made them work non stop for their keep (as in a sweat shop)? The only difference between that and a puppy mill, is the dogs aren't able to speak for themselves, while children can. They are living, breathing creatures and they deserve to live an abuse free life. A puppy mill is death row for dogs. They are being punished, just for being born. Not only are they kept in cages 24 hours a day (without EVER getting out to play or have a bath), but they are beaten, starved, and never get medical attention from a licensed vet. Without medical attention, there's no way of knowing if they have genetic deffects, which can and will be passed down to their young. Something needs to be done to stop this atrocity! If you've ever had a dog, cat or any other animal, do it for them. Do it for their freedom. You can make a difference. Stand up for them! Speak for those who cannot speak for themselves! Do a segment on what really goes on in these places. Show the world that you are good people! DOWN WILL PUPPY MILLS! -Heather www.MillBusters.com

That is disgusting... I don't even know where to start. I am in disbelief that no one found it appalling that 70 dogs will be kept there to suppliment the family's income! And, it's 70 dogs now- who knows how many innocent dogs will be shoved in cages and forced to breed 1,5, or 10 years from now. All of these people were worried about the noise. This amazes me- they're worried about the noise when they should be thinking about why these dogs will be barking and creating noise in the first place. And, how does a family that needs additional income afford 70 dogs of the breeds they mentioned?! That is a huge chunk of change! Not to mention the purchasing of cages, food, renovation for the barn, etc. Running hot water pipes under the floor is fairly expensive from what I understand. And, did I miss their method of heating and cooling the building? A family couldn't live in the winter in PA with just heated floor! How ignorant can a community be? I would be interested to speak to the local ASPCA or Humane Society to see if there were any efforts against this family. I'm disgusted.

Here's the one I sent,... again I find it appalling that multiple variances were allowed to create another puppy mill in a kennel restricted zone no less. To consider raising dogs as an agricultural commodity in comparison with hogs or chickens is absurd. Hogs and chickens do not need to be socialized to produce good ham and eggs. Puppies, on the other hand need intensive socialization and handling to make even half decent pets. These people obviously have no intention of performing this neccessary part of dog breeding. They could not possibly socialize that many dogs on top of caring for cows and other farm chores. Even assuming that these animals will be kept clean, fed and vetted they will be producing pups with behavior problems that will not make good pets and will more than likely end up filling already overcrowded shelters. The small breeds they plan on producing require careful grooming and indoor environments to be well kept. Have any of these people been in the top of a barn in July? Fan or no fan, that incinerator they plan for disposal would get busy really fast. As far as addressing the genetic health issues, I am sure the Kings will make out just fine, since most genetic problems don't show up until pups are much older and since they plan on selling 90% through dealers, it will be almost impossible for sick pup owners to trace the origin. This board just allowed an unreasonable amount of exceptions to be made with these variances. Now there is a precedent for the next guy down the street to do the same thing. Why bother with zoning laws at all? They didn't even have to wrestle with the moral dilema of a puppy mill. They had zoning restrictions in place that could have prevented this and I am dumbfounded as to why they would have chosen to side with greed over common sense. Thank you for the opportunity to express my opinion. Sincerely, Stacy Luyben sylvanyorkies@entermail.net
