I lost a little 3 pound yorkie in a small fish pond in our back yard too. He was so curious about the fish in the pond .

You know what most accidents are preventable if you know what was going to happen...unfortunately that is the very thing that makes them accidents...
we all do our best to protect and love our babies but sometimes things happen anyway...all of these are tragic stories and hard as they are to read they do serve to warn those of us who read them of possible things to watch for....I lost my little rhen just before christmas to a fall off the couch onto the tile floor....she hit her head and I picked her up and could feel her heart beat and I felt when it stopped...I have wanted to go back in time to just change the one thing but I can't so I hope these stories help to save someone else's baby from the same fate...rhenny was up and down off the couch all the time it was 2 am and she woke me up on the couch to take her outside..I keep wishing I had gone to bed because there is carpet in there...
Please keep sharing your stories...

However, that being said, when I was "under 12" my Grandma raised poms, and we helped with them--played and socialized them and they/we were fine. I remember being told to be careful their legs can break because they are tiny--but that taught me to be aware/more responsible. I think it's unfair to rule out a potential good home because they have children. I agree with researching and even asking them(buyers)--have you thought this totally thru and let them know the risks of having small kids around puppies. My boss raises yorkies--and on occasion when she was out of town, I brought home a litter. My kids--now 6 and 7(were 4 1/2 and 5) love/loved it, and they were very careful with the babies. I supervised them and didn't allow them to run all over the house with them, but it was good for them as well as socialization for the pups. I currently have 2 yorkies-one I bought when she was 2.5lbs at almost a year(kids were 5 and 6) and I just got my 2nd one that also is 2.5lbs and my kids are 6 and 7--they are very careful with them and love playing with/carrying them. I think it teaches the kids to be more cautious--I remind them, even if they are being careful to "Not forget how fragile they are and to be careful". I remember my boss selling a yorkie to a family, the little girl had just turned 5--she was so happy and held that puppy very carefully--she said it was going to be her pup and she was going to call her Sarah.

How do you stay and watch your small children every second of the day. I raised fine young women one is in her second year of medical school now, but they were kids and they did have friends. I could not possibly watch them every second. Raising your kids has nothing to do with an accident. Not saying they are abusing the doggies but they may step on them or drop them or drop a cup on their heads. Please those days of LEAVE IT TO BEAVER are not real and we all know this. Kids have accidents and that is real. When I sold Lolas first litter I would not sell to anyone with kids under 12. Im sorry but I am an experienced mother and did not want anthing to happen to my furbabbies. Now, every now and then you will find a very responsible younger child that will really take good care of the pup. I think the worst thing about the media is Britney Spears, Paris Hilton. They have made these young children and teens think these little gods creatures are nothing but toys. This is an accident waiting to happen. Im not being mean please dont take it that way and Im glad you have resposible small children but many do not. I did but my girls are atheltic and sometimes are not watching their surroundings...These are fragile little guys that can go down fast. Good luck to you and please dont take my venting wrong...LRod

I won't take your venting wrong--but even adults can step on the puppy or drop them or drop a cup on their head. I am not saying I watch my kids every second(or that I have a Leave it to Beaver family). I understand where you're coming from--you are responsible and want your fur-babies to go the best/safest home possible. I just think it's sad to count out every family that has children under 12--every family should have the opportunity to research and have the breed of their choice, whether it's a St. Bernard, poodle, yorkie, chihuahua, whatever--as long as they put the time and effort into researching and are willing to go the extra mile to have the breed they want. I guess this is a touchy subject for me because I do have children under 12 and I would have been very disappointed had my boss said--too bad you have little kids so you can't have these pups. This will have to be a subject where I will agree to disagree rather then argue about it.

I think this is a wonderful thread that will make many people aware of dangers that may kill our furbabies. I think you sound like a very responsible pet owner that I would probably sell to..Good Luck and thanks for the feedback.....LRod

I agree. I get offended when people say all kids under the age of 12 shouldn't have yorkies, pets, or anything. Like I said, I was 3 years old and we got a 6 week old delicate kitten and she lived a LONG 17 years without any injuries or accidents caused by me. I was an only child and had no one to rough house with and even if I was, I still was a calm child, and I was taught to be careful. You know what I did 1/2 the time? I read. I read books all day, every day. If I didn't have any animals in my house, I would have had no one. I loved every minute of my animals and I cherished them. It taught me how to love and how to respect. My dad was in the army and we moved every 3 years, so I didn't really have friends because I was also really shy. My pets were my BEST friends and I considered them to be siblings. Now some kids, yes, they shouldn't be given pets, but it's not right to exclude ALL kids just because of their age. And besides, accidents don't discriminate based on age... they can happen to anyone... this thread is solid proof that people of any age have accidents.

Once when my parents were at the house Chuckie and Candy were playing with a little rawhide bone, when Chuckie started barking fratically, my Mom was like "What is the matter with you Chuckie?" But when she looked at Candy, Candy was choking and was foaming at the mouth, (Because she was choking) Peed all over herself, and was fallen over on her side, my Mom called my Dad and he picked her up really fast and she spit out the bone. Thanks to my Dad Candy is still alive today!
