freak accidents... does anyone have any stories of "freak accidents" with yorkies?? things that normally wouldn't happen but did? i have one that i'd like to share so that people keep an eye on their furbabies a little harder... this happened a couple years back. one of my friends from high school had a 2 year old yorkie girl (cinnamon). she was a tiny yorkie, probably 3 lbs or so... anyway, she was playing with a toy on the couch, and fell off. she landed on her neck, it broke, and she died on impact... there was nothing that could be done to help her afterwards... she was gone, and it was very sad. and the thing is, had she fallen in any other position, she might have survived... she had to fall in just the right way to break her little neck. :( this is why i call it a "freak accident" because i think kash has fallen a couple times, but never enough to hurt him... not even a peep out of him... he just bounced right back. just thought i'd share. |
There have been several "freak accident" threads posted on here. One that comes to mind...someone's puppy was sitting at their feet, didn't realize she was there, and stepped on her head. Awful....and so heartbreaking. |
Wow! that is weird! I have a big little guy and falls off stuff all the time rough housing. I am guessing though that tiny girl couldn't have jumped up on the couch. I wouldn't leave Brutis some were higher than were he could jump too. She must have been really fragil too. Poor baby!!:( |

I always worry about Hot Rod jumping on and off the couch. He's even gotten on the very top of the couch which is a BIG NO NO! He's only 3 lbs.:) |
When Dusty was about four months old he still lived with his other mommy (now Aunt Melanie) her kids were playing ,and feel on Dusty. He suffered a bad concussion and could not walk or stand up straight for over a month. He finally recovered and has no signs of it today. To be soooo feisty, they are very fragile. |
I have one that happened to someone else. The guy was getting into the car to leave his house and closed the car door on his little yorkie killing her. She was trying to jump into the car to go with him. He didn't know she had followed him out. This story stays in my mind. I'm very, very careful closing car doors. I do hate the stories, they're so heartbreaking. :( |
Over the years I have heard many tragic stories. One story like the one you told. A 5 month old Yorkie female jumped from the top of the couch, landed wrong and broke her neck. Another small Yorkie was running hard and ran into a coffee table head first and died from a concussion. Another Yorkie had a door that was off the hinges fall on her and kill her. Plus I have heard numerous stories of Yorkies being ran over by cars, drowning in a pool, drowning in a bucket of water or being killed by another dog. It is sad to hear all the tragic stories. |
Adie's father was scrambling from under the dining room table to get away from a fight between two other dogs just as a 4th dog was jumping down from a chair. The 4th dog landed on top of William (Adie's father) and broke his back. He died before they could get him to the vet. |
i had a 6 month yorkie pom that weigh 1.5lbs and no experience with the teenys..well one day he fell of the sofa we rushed him to the er for steriods and stuff because i thought he was dead he was defecating on his self and stuff..well a few days later he came home and we kept him locked up about a week ot 2 2 later he was out with me walking around and he was walking kidna sideways ...well my toddler was sick and screaming so i was getting some medicine that i keep up high and stood on a chair when is stepped down i stepped on his little head and killd him...i have never gotten over that!! my husband wonders if he died and then i stepped on him because he was following me around all day and then its like he laid down and didnt move and normally they would move out the way and i didnt come down fast or anything.. so thats my freak accident |
Wow, these stories are really sad. I have none to share, but offer ((((HUGS)))) to those who have shared. Peanutt...it's funny that my boy is Peanut also and he weighs 8 pounds, lol |
this thread is a little too freaky...i think i will not read any further...thanks! |
Yorkies are so small they can get hurt easily. One time Jewels juped fro a chair on the patio and landed wrong. She limped for a little while and I feared she had broken her leg. She didnt though. She is not super tiny either since hes 6 lbs |
I have a weird one that has a happy ending but it is about my Crested. I heard him gaging really loud and rushed over and saw a needle in his mouth before he took off I caught him and felt around in his mouth for it. I thought I felt it in his throat so I rushed him to the emergency vet. they looked for it and didn't see anything. [$170 for nothing] So i went home and looked for the needle and never found it. He seemed fine so I didn't worry about it. This happened on a thursday evening. Saturday Zeus had a messy accident I went to clean it up and guess what I found!!! I couldn't believe it!!! It still had thread attached!!! I called the vet and they said he should be fine!! Naughty dog!!!:D |
I came home from the store and found Samantha caught up in the mini blinds. She was fine but after that, I tied the mini blind strings waaaay up high. |
Oh man I am sick to my stomach from reading this, I am sorry for every one who has had an accident like these, They are so small that everything seems like a hazzard. |

THreads like these are invaluable. They teach us lessons we won't have to learn first hand and remind us how delicate our little ones are! |
Maggy fell off my bed just yesterday and landed on her side, she was ok, just scared her and scared me to! So sorry to hear about your friends yorkie. |
I have to say, I wish I never read this! I'm totally freaked out. I told my BF last night that I no longer want him throwing toys off the couch, or around the couch for that matter because I'm afraid Mia will break her neck! |
This is a great leaning thread for those with small pups. When I read the horror that can happen it makes me all so happy to have a 15lber. Be carefull you guys with your little ones. I know accidents will always happen but we can all learn something from this post. |
wow.. reading these made me realize how lucky i've gotten.. my babies crashed into walls and tables.. and fallen off stairs.. and beds.. and everything.. while playing with each other.. and they're both fine.. so i guess i'm lucky.. i'm gonna have to keep a more watchful eye on them because they are not as strong as i thought they were!!! |
Teddi has had her share of accidents and THANK GOD nothing has happened to her. She has fallen down a set of stairs (walked down about 2 of them and then just started rolling down the rest of the way). I caught her 2 stairs from the bottom....I think she was saved by the fact that she was wearing a hoodie so she had padding. Another time she was at a friends house and fell through her stairs outside (fell from about the 3rd stair from the top - she jumped out of her bag because she got excited to see my friend) but happened to land in a tub of water so by the time we ran down there she was swimming her hardest to get to the side of the tub. Now we avoid all stairs. She is not allowed on them at all. |

I have a story, but with a happy ending. My friends and their yorkie were walking along a river bank, and the yorkie decided to jump in. Well the current was too strong, and a few feet down the river was a waterfall. My friend quickly jumped in after the dog and grabbed him. But they both went over the fall. The dog was unharmed, but my friend busted his ankle really bad, and had a bunch of cuts and bruises. I'm going camping with my little guy for the first time this summer, I'm going to make sure he's always on the leash. And I'm planning on buying him a life jacket, because we go canoing a lot. I hope he'll be ok on the water. :( |
I've heard a story when an icicle fell on a yorkie, killing it. I've also heard a story when a yorkie was playing on the couch and she fell and her head hit the coffee table leg and broke her neck, killing her. Thankfully nothing's ever happened to my little Mia! So people, keep your Yorkies away from coffee tables and icicles! |
Gremlin is such a boy. I used to freak out about him sliding thru the house (chasing his fur-brother and playing fetch) and running into things. But he is almost 3 now and still does it. If he brings his tennis ball back i know he is ok. If not is when i have to worry. |
trixie was playing with a soft kitty cat boll, the one that comes with catnip, she try to eat it and was choking on it. Also, at 2lbs, she jumps up and down the coutch all the time, that is why I rub her paws couse I always think she is hurting from jumping. |
These stories are so sad. :( I had a Chia-Pom, she was about 5lbs. Jumped up and down off the sofa all the time. She jumped one day and started screaming. She had broken her leg. the bone was showing. Took her to the vet. he said he could amputate it or do surgery and put pins in it. So, I had the surgery done. She had a cast on her leg. They ended up cutting off the blood-flow to her foot, it was too tight. One night, while I was asleep, she chewed some of her toes off. When I woke up, I freaked out. took her back in. She ended up with one of those cones on her head. Her leg did heal, and she was able to walk okay. |
