We May Have to Rehome Logan :( I have posted before about our housetraining woes with our 8-month old male Yorkie, Logan. I have housetrained dogs before and had not trouble, but it is not working this time. I found a strict schedule to follow on-line, which requires a lot of crate time. With Logan being an energetic 8-month old puppy, keeping him in his crate for a good portion of the day leaves him with too much energy at night, and then he doesn't sleep through the night. But even when I allow him some closely supervised playtime - about 15-20 minutes - after he potties outside, he STILL sometimes pees or poops inside the house. Just last night after I had taken him outside, we played "lightly" inside for about 15 minutes. I took him with me to the bathroom so that I could potty :) . As we were walking out of the bathroom, he stood on the carpet and peed! Although we ring a bell, say "potty outside," and use the same door to go outside to potty, Logan has never given us any indication that he has to go potty outside. He doesn't stand by the door or do anything that would indicate he needs to go outside. If he is not housetrained in 4 months - when he turns a year old - my husband says we will have to find a new home for him. We simply cannot keep a dog inside the house who pees and poops on the carpet. It will ruin our carpeting, and the house will start to smell badly. This breaks my heart, but I understand. IF we do have to rehome Logan, I would like to find a wonderful, caring, patient family for him - someone who does NOT hit dogs for any reason and a home without small children (Logan weighs only 3 lbs.). I will not put him on an airplane to get to his new home. It would have to be someone who is willing to drive to north Alabama to pick him up. Is this a good forum to find a new home for a Yorkie? |
toke my nicki almost two years the smaller they are the harder it is thought it woild never happen then oe day tah dah but you do whats best for you |
Well, it wount be hard to get him a new home. I assume lots of people will want him because he is only 3 lbs. Some of them with good intentions and some NOT!!!.Did you try crate training? With wee wee pads??* And last but not least, they sell belly bands, its like a small diaper that the dogs use, very effective. Also, neutering might help, but I am against it, plus at 3 lbs, I dont think its too smart to do the operation.Good luck, and I hope you can keep the little guy. There are way to fix this problem. |
Apparently Yorkies are the hardest dogs to house train. Keep at it. Suzy still has accidents inside and she's 7 months old now. All I can suggest is trying to keep your carpets cleaned regularly, I do mine every 2 weeks and get some sort of product that eliminates the odour so your doggy doesn't smell the urine in the carpet and repeats the action. Have you tried belly bands? A lot of YT members seem to have had success with this. I'd hate to think that you'd have to rehome him over something like this. :( |
You might want to try belly bands for Logan. We use them for our new male and they're great. Also, if you have Logan on a good food and you schedule his feedings you will just about know when he has to go poop so that will help and maybe you won't have to rehome him. Good luck! |
Please, for his sake, if you are thinking about rehoming him, do it now. It wouldn't be fair to him to continue to get attached to you. Yorkies can be very difficult to potty train. Mine is six and still goes in the house quite often. We just adjust to her and put different flooring in that can be easily mopped. Carpets aren't the best choice with Yorkies. I think it is one of those things that you have to be willing to put up with if you are going to own Yorkies... |
Yorkies do take a very long time to housetrain compared to other breeds I've owned in the past. I have a two year old and a one year old and I still have to be vigilant on getting them outside regularly because they don't always let you know. I also have carpeting but we're having tiled installed this month on the entire downstairs floor just for yorkie purposes (and of course resell value in the future). I'd rather change the flooring then think of getting rid of my babies! They're also full of boundless energy! Are you taking your baby Logan for long walks every day? He does need to have time to run around and use up that energy during the day. Is there a room with tiling you can block off to let him play in during the day instead of crating him so much? I've found that my two usually do their "poo" on the first excursion out in the morning and after dinner during their long evening walk -- so about 12 hours apart. Knowing Logan's schedule will help get him outside when he needs to get his business done. I know it can be frustrating at times but I hope you don't give up on your baby but if your husband is more worried about carpeting, perhaps a new home might be best for Logan because he will have accidents after a year old. |
Its not easy... We've had Meka since 9 wks and at a yr old now, she's still got a ways to go. Im now thinking of getting her into training classes, because what we are doing doesnt seem to be 100% effective. Maybe you can trying looking into that as well... None the less, hope all works out for you :) |

Yes, we are crate training. Have been at it for 6 months now. I take him out as late as 11-11:30 p.m., but he is still waking up in the middle of the night to potty. Last night I told him to go back to sleep, and he ended up peeing in the crate. We don't use the pee pads because we don't want him going inside the house. The vet wanted to wait until he's a year old to neuter because he is so small, but I don't know that he's going to get much bigger than what he already is. His parents weigh only 4 pounds each. |

Product If you're worried about pee smells, there is a product called Urine Erase. You can get it at pet stores. I've used it for cat urine before (and nothing is worse than that) and it gets rid of all smells and is non-toxic. I know this doesn't solve the training problem but it will get rid of any smells so the puppy doesn't know he used that spot before. Have you ever had him tested for an infection? Good luck with your training! |

My little girl is a yr old, 4 lbs and I have to make sure she goes outside every 30 minutes when we are home or she will go in the house. I set a timer in the kitchen to remind me. I also put a pee pad down which she will use for the most part. She still potties in her crate when I am at work, and I don't see that changing anytime soon which just means doggy laundry everyday. Her potty training is getting better, and I just keep praying and hoping for the day she goes and sits by the back door when she needs to go potty like Rocky does. Just stay consisted on feeding times and potty outings. Logan will get the hang of it. |
OK first - if he is asking to go out in the middle of the night (even by waking up) why are you not taking him out?? He obviously had to go if he ends up going in his crate. We had to take Loki out in the middle of the night until he was at least 1 year old. Why can't you just buy a carpet steamer? We bought a little bissell for like $60 and we've more than gotten our money's worth. The spot only smells if you don't clean it right! Enzyme cleaners are your friend. I have 2 that are housetrained. It did take until the were a little older, but they got it! It is possible! (But, guess what, they still have rare accidents. And yes, they both know they are supposed to go outside and they are truly accidents - like they asked to go out and I was busy and they really had to go!) BUT, even with fully trained dogs - it does not mean your carpets are not in danger. Mine puke on the carpet - steam cleaner! Heck my neighbor borrows our steam cleaner all the time for her LAB when he gets sick. It happens! Her dog ate and puked up a blue bone that is never coming out... We put wood downstairs and we'll replace the carpet upstairs before we move - but we would have done that anyway! Oh and yes - if you crate him all day he will be hyper at night. Go for a very, very long walk and make sure he is EMPTY before bed. It helps, really! There is hope but you really do have to be patient and be willing to tolerate a little mess. If you aren't willing to do that, then you might want to consider finding him a new home now. We got Sammy at 10 months and we love her! Re-homing isn't a bad thing even though it is hard. Good luck! |
