why don't you take out your carpet and have all hard floors? I can't wait until I own my own house and can do that one day. I actually just had my carpet cleaned today...Lacy & Rylie still have occassional accidents. I'm thinking about putting bellybands and diapers on them just when I'm away from the house so pee won't get on the carpet in case they do have an accident. Why not try bellybands?

My boy is almost 3, and girl just made 2.... we REGULARLY have "accidents" inside and they both know that is not where the should go... I have learned over the years that it is the breed, they just have a hard time understanding why it is a problem.. haha
It surely takes TIME and you cannot take your eyes off them for even a minute...

This morning I'm having a hard time getting him to go outside at all! For the past hour, I've taken him out twice, and he won't potty. I started using treats, so all he does is stand there looking at me, waiting for a treat. I tell him to "go potty" like I usually do, but he won't go. I have to leave for awhile and just hope he doesn't pee in his crate.

As for taking him out in the middle of the night, I usually do. But for a week, he didn't ask to go out in the middle of the night, so I knew it was possible for him to wait until morning. I thought maybe he was just getting in the habit of going outside in the middle of the night because at his age, he should be able to hold it for more than 2-3 hours.

Yes, we are crate training. Have been at it for 6 months now. I take him out as late as 11-11:30 p.m., but he is still waking up in the middle of the night to potty. Last night I told him to go back to sleep, and he ended up peeing in the crate. We don't use the pee pads because we don't want him going inside the house.


Is there water in his crate?

I was talking to the vet about Ellie's potty training problems and she started to say that I need to crate her... And I said yes, I need to put her in the smallest crate possible and then I said we already tried that and she peed on herself. Then the vet gave up.:p

I know this has to be extremely frustrating for you!!!!! I know exactly how it is! I know this sounds really crazy but try to start getting him to use the pads and this will take a little while but after he gets use to using the pads eventually get the pad closer and closer to the door and take it outside. Atleast during this time it won't get on your carpet. I know you really don't want to rehome him!!! If that is him in your avatar..he is adorable. I live in bama and would take him!!

Personally I agree about having carpeting. I understand completely.

Now that being said....how often do you take him out? He is small....smaller means a smaller bladder and he'll need to go more often. I took mine out hourly...on a leash, repeated the go potty phrase...and stayed usually until someone went potty. I took them out immediately in the morning when they woke up and then hourly. I did not wait for signs...we just went. We also used the same door each and every time....with the hopes eventually they would know what going to that door meant.

With poops I think you just have to pay attention when he's going. Mine will both go first thing in the AM....and don't go again until we get home from work at 5. This has no bearing on when they've eaten. Sometimes they'll eat breakfast at home...and sometimes they wait until we're at work to eat.

To be honest I really think it was close to a year...before they really got it.

Another thing....Reese gets distracted....we'll let them out to potty. Ramsey will go immediately...then asks to come back in...Reese follows. Do a "pee pee" check on Reeser...nope not wet...but him back out.... you go potty Reese. :rolleyes:

I agree on this. Pee pads if put on tile at first is easy to clean. Just wipe daily that particular area with white vinegar-cheap and easy. When they get used to it you can try taking it outside when he is older. I just stay with pee pad and I put it on the tile. I don't have to worry about him having to go at night because he will go to his pee pad whenever he wants and when we do go out, he does it outside too. Best of both worlds.

Hmmm, when you take the puppy for a walk, have cheerios in your pocket, when you see him go pipi, Say - good boy pipi, give him 2 cheerios. Same thing when he goes #2. Good boy and then give him cheerio. Maybe this will make the connection between treat & potty. Consistency will get you through this.

The tinkle in the night could be he had a late sip, or I would wonder if he could have a urinary problem that may need antibiotics.

I don't believe Yorkies are HARD, Difficult to train. Zander came home in June 06, he hasn't had an accident in the house since Oct. 06, prior to me he had been allowed to potty on linoleum floors! Jazzie came home July 07, she has not had an accident since 11/07 as soon as I put the bells on the backdoor.

One day at a time, he will make the connection. :thumbup:

If it were my baby, I sure would. I personally would do anything I possibly could to keep my dog. I don't normally comment on rehoming threads but it seemed like you were asking for suggestions to try to keep him which is why I did decided to comment and offer advise. I know its frustrating to have them pee on the carpet...poop can at least be picked up. Like I said, I just had my carpet cleaned this morning and would love for it to stay pee-free. Pulling the carpet out isn't an option for me because I am not the owner of the house so I plan to use belly bands & diapers while I am away from the house because that is when accidents happen. Belly bands would at least be worth a try.

Sounds like to me that you need to rehome him,yorkies are just like having a baby,its never ending work and they have small bladers so they cannot hold it like bigger dogs,i live in georgia and would be happy to be there for you and this is the best place to find him a new home,iits better for him to rehome him at this age so it want be so hard on him and i know your having a hard time it gets very frustrating but these babies can since this and they are little babies that want to please there parents,please pm me im here for you to talk.

I understand your frustration. Baxter just went 2 nights without going out in the middle of the night and I am ecstatic. He went out at 11pm and 5 am but that is all night at our house. Keep trying. He still has accidents on the floor even right after I take him out. Try confining him to a small room in the house instead of the crate during the day. Bax stays in our bathroom and I put down a puppy pad. He started using that during the day. I had to put some of his urine on it the first day but he has used it ever since. Keep trying!

Don't feel bad. It happens, Maggie just turned 2 years old and these last few weeks are the first that she slept through the night with out waking us up. We never thought she'd get potty trained.
