YT 2000 Club Member | At What Age? Maggy may is part chiuahuah and part yorkie. I'm not a breeder nor do I wish to be. She's had a lot of health issues since we've gotten her and I want to make the best choices in her life for her. I want to get her spayed when she's old enough and her immune system is strong enough, so, with that being said, at what age do you think she'll come into heat? I want to get her spayed BEFORE she comes into heat. Also, what tests do they do to make sure her immune system is up to par before they spay her? Thanks in advance.

| My guess is that a vet who you trust, (the key word here-TRUST) would be able to answer your questions. I would think that any surgery would be put off until your little one is healthy. My Yorkie was neutered at 5 mo. and my Pommie was a rescue so they neutered him at 3 mo. before I took him home. I thought 3 mo. was pretty young.

| You can spay as early as 12-16 weeks, but a lot of vets like to wait until 6 months. She may come into heat anytime between 6 and 12 months, but I suggest not waiting until the last minute to get her spayed. You should really have her spayed by 6 months if she's healthy or 7 months at the latest so that she doesn't come into heat before you can spay her. At 6-7 months you can have any retained baby teeth pulled as well. Choose a vet that you trust and is familiar with spaying tiny dogs. In addition to a good physical exam, have a full blood panel done. This should show if there are any underlying health problems. I also recommend a Bile Acid Test to check for liver shunt as an extra precaution and to rule out a shunt (even if she isn't showing any symptoms) just because LS is so common in yorkies and I know you said she came from a bad environment where I'm sure no health screening was done. As long as you do all of that, there really isn't much chance of anything going wrong. There is always a risk but rarely does anything go wrong. And you'll be doing the best thing for her by having her spayed

YT 2000 Club Member | Thank you so much to both of you for replying to this and giving me all this info, I appreciate it SOOOO MUCH! I'm actually going to print it out and take it with me to the vet next time I take her in. She had her last set of shots today and then gets her rabies shot in 4 weeks, and at that appointment, I wanna talk to him about all this and making sure she's as healthy as can be before going in to be spayed. I just worry so much about her with all she's had to deal with in her short lil life. I'll DEFINATELY have the work up done before anything, as I want to know FOR SURE that she's A OK to go under and won't have any added stresses. Again, thanks so much ladies.

| I know with most little dogs, they usually go into heat later rather than sooner, but Bitsy went into heat a few days shy of 6 months. I also read that if you get your dog spayed before their first heat, it greatly reduces the chance of her getting mammary cancer.
