THat is so sad. That is why I am sooo super extra precausious of who adopts any of the dogs that I foster.

She was adopted in October and then recently ended back up at the same shelter. I found her on the site posted a week ago and the woman said that Maggie just ended back up there and thats when she proceeded to tell me not only was she diabetic but she was going blind because of improper care. Also yes they would not consider me because the distance.

Oh poor thing. Why do those people adopt her when they are not willing to do what they are supposed to do?

I hope the rescue group is extra careful when they screen people this time. Coping with a diabetic dog is not as simple as twice daily insulin shots. Even the minority that keep their eyesight like Lady have chronic eye problems like conjunctivitis, uveitis and dry eye. Lady sees an opthalmologist.

Diabetics have a compromised immune system so it is hard for their body to fight off infection. I nearly lost Lady a year ago to an E-coli infection. Knock wood, I have had her on Transfer Factor (collostrum) ever since and she hasn't had a uti since.

They will just have to be very careful to be upfront with potential adopters so they have a clear picture of the commitment they are making so sweet Maggie can have a long happy life like my Lady.

Blindness is one of the main side effects in dogs, but unmanaged diabetes also damages other organs you can't see like the kidneys. My Lady still has her eyesight and has had no other organ damage after all these years. I treat her as I would a human diabetic, though, and test her blood sugar myself daily.

Unfortunately, most diabetic dogs do go blind, most within the first nine months after diagnosis, usually because people wait too long to take them to the vet to be diagnosed or are too slow in getting the disease regulated. The good news is that dogs adjust very well to blindness because their sense of smell is so acute.

I hope little Maggie finds a special home with people who will take good care of her from now on.

Wow- I am impressed with your care for your diabetic baby! I am a Type 1 diabetic, and I know how hard it is for people to control Blood sugar! I take up to 5 shots a day- 2 types of insulin! And i do not have control- it is 2 high- or 2 low! and they have changed my amounts many times??
To keep a little one under control,who cannot tell you how they feel, is awsome!
Maybe I should change docters- ARe you taking any new patients???? LOL

oh how upsetting this is, if they could not handle it, they should have found someone else to take her that would.. she is very pretty... and looks so loveable.. I cannot go into those sites.. I get too emotional about those kinds of acts,,,

I think it's easier to manage a diabetic dog because Lady has no choice. She eats what I feed her, never gets to skip her shots, etc.

She is hysterical! She loves getting her blood sugar checked. I made it a really positive, upbeat experience right from the start with a happy voice and a treat so she comes running when I tell her it's time to check her sugar. In fact, she'll usually comes running when she hears me unzip the case to her meter.
