| New Pappy in Town I'm judging from most of the threads I've read here that most of the posters are women. I'm an old retired grandfather that lost his Westie to bad dog food about 4 months before it hit the news. We thought she was poisoned at first but there just wasn't any way that could have happened. As I said, I'm an old grandfather and my wife and weren't going to get another dog because I'm crippled up and she is a breast cancer survivor and is still working. We weren't sure we could take care of a dog but this is the first time I've ever had the time to enjoy a dog to its fullest and I gave in and got a Yorkie that a man had to give away. We never had a Yorkie but have had everything from mutts , min.poodles to a Great Dane. All were members of the family. I'm the primary caretaker of this little guy, a first for me. He's about 3 now and came from a good home but everything there was different. He had a doggie door and life was different. The weather has been cold and wet and I haven't been able to get him on schedule with his housebreaking. He doesn't like the cold any better than I. The funny part of this is, I got him pee pads and he uses them but I think he needs glasses because his aim is off. He never bothers me until after he has gone and then he comes and gets me to go to the pee pad and watches me clean up after him. I'm not quite sure who is training who. I seem to be the one being told what and when to do it. I'm not really worried because when it warms up a little we'll get down to some serious business. The man I got him from gave me his dog food and some treats he likes but when I first fed him he just looked at me with a look that seemed to say, "I'm not eating that stuff". So now he has me cooking for him. He seems to like ground turkey with some scrambled eggs ,rice and green beans. I'm thinking maybe I'll add some vitamins to it to make sure he is getting what he needs. I'll find him some other things he likes to give him some varity. He needs trimmed but I don't have his complete records so I have to take him to the vet first. I want to get him checked out anyway. The whole family is taken with him. My daughter and grandaughter bring him a toy or something every time they visit and he makes visits to my grandson and grandaughter's rooms to check up on them regularly. My wife wasn't too happy with another dog at first but he has her won over now too. He goes to her and won't leave until she gives him the attention he feels he has coming. When he decides he wants some attention, he gets it. He and I are really starting to bond. I wasn't too sure about how long this would take because one time we took a Great Dane the vet offered us, knowing we had a Great Dane and understood them. That dog belly crawled for two weeks before he would trust us enough to stand. We had quite a time getting him to trust us. I think maybe somebody had abused him. Anyway, I just wanted all you women to know that an old geezer can have quite a time with a Yorkie. I'm not going to dress him up or anything like that(he is a guy) . The women here put a ribbon on him but he took it right off. Anyway, I just wanted you all to know, an old geezer can have a good time with a Yorkie too. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Hi, just had to read your post before going to bed and I'm glad I did. You write wonderfully, and that's one lucky little dog you have. So sorry about your Westie, they are such cute dogs. Glad you found someone else to give your heart too. Welcome to YorkieTalk, I hope you stick around and add your two cents to our great discussions. I like to think of myself as a young geezer or an old geezer in training. My Joey didn't like topknots and bows at first; I had to show him pictures of ninja warriors before he finally relented. Post some pictures of your Yorkie when you can.

| I'm so glad you decided to get another dog. Yorkies are amazing and it sounds like you are perfect for each other. I think you've got it right, we do our best but they are the ones that train us. There are threads in the Health and Diet section about homecooking (and supplements) if you are looking for new ideas about what to feed him. Welcome to YT!!

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | Congratulations & Welcome to YT! There are a few men around here who don't mind being seen with a yorkie! My husband says you're only a "real man" when it doesn't phase you to be seen walking a yorkie w/ a hair bow! I have 5 yorkies, and he loves them all just as much as I do!
