Why do some Yorkie owners act like this I am just venting. My Yorkie Rickles weighs 10 pounds. He was 7 pounds when I got him but you could count his ribs. He is not overweight in the least. My vet says he is the perfect weight for his frame. Then I got a puppy and he is 8 months old and weighs 6 pounds. He too is not fat just healthy. Well anyway this lady at work saw them and said "oh you have the big yorkies - we always have the little yorkies." Then she proceeded to tell me that They always had tiny yorkies not big ones like mine. She just went on and on. I just don't understand that sort of thing. I have 2 of the most beautiful yorkies you've ever seen and they are perfect to me. It just got me that she was saying my yorkies were inferior. Has anyone else run into that sort of thing? Yep I had one lady at a festival say to me oh you have the larger yorkies. They are 6 and 11 lbs and I like ther sizes. Just ignore people like her |
I think she probably did not realize her words could be offensive. Some folks just have NO clue regarding social skills. I like both my yorkies, my teensie 3# and my big old 6#... it is all a matter of the doggies personality, not their size! |
Just ignore them............just like people, animals come in all shapes and sizes! Consider yourself lucky.....that just means you have more yorkie to love!!!!:p |
There have been several threads along time that have said the samething. Yes, those of us who have the larger Yorkies have heard this also. Most people who say these rude comments have no understanding of the breed. They only know that Yorkies are suppose to be small. Next time someone makes a comment like that educate them and say that the original Yorkshire Terrier weighed up to 20lbs! That should stop them in their tracks:p I love the Teapot's. You can play rougher with them and not worry so much about their little legs and knees. I find it much less stressful raising Buddy then if he were 3-4 lbs. I would have had a stroke by now with the things he get's into. Don't feel bad she didn't know any better is all. Good luck with your "Teapot". |
I've always had tiny Yorkies too but I've never belittled anyone for having larger ones. My best friend had one named Peggy Sue...she was 22 pounds and beautiful! I've loved Yorkies since I was a child and I've always been able to see the beauty in them no matter what their size was. I will tell you this though...my Biewer girls are 6, 7 and 8 pounds and I love their larger size! |
ya know, I get the total opposite if I get anything at all! People are always amazed at how little my dogs are, they are 8.5lbs and 5.5lbs... they always ask why they are soo different when they are brothers! LOL I just laugh, such a dumb question! But whatever... breathe in, breathe out and let it go... it ain't worth being upset about at all! Your pups are what they are! Just tell her that! |

:( ... I so know what you are talking about ! See here it is ... OMG she is soooo small ... why is she so small. Whats wrong with her ... bla bla bla It upsets me a lot ... Maya is the way she is and there is nothing I can change. So YES I can relate to that ! |
I get the same, people come up to me and are rude asking me why I have such a small dog and how bad it is. I just want to slap them, it is not like I. went out looking for a small dog. She is 5LB and a little over weight but I just happened to get her and save her life and there are all these people out there that have no idea what they are talking about and it is frustrating. I am venting sorry. |
Those people probably use the term "teacup" also:thumbdown Some yorkies just keep growing just like people do, but usually they don't need diets like people:p |
I think if some one is saying something offensive to you about your yorkies, you should let them know... If they are friends they should be kind!!! I have had people say mean things because Chewy is from a pet shop. it kills me and I stick up for my baby. If some one was bashing my skin kids I'd have something to say!!! |
I have 6 now and they are all different sizes:) i get asked that by my friends all the time, Why is that one so much smaller then that one, why is that one so much darker in color then that one..the questions never stop:rolleyes: i just smile and say ( got Me );) |
Same here.. I get the ol'.. Oh he must be the Standard Size. I always say.. There is only ONE size of Yorkies.. jsyk.. |
Girls dont feel alone, i get the same thing, hmmm must be doing something wrong  |
Ignorant people exist all over!! Quote:
One day on last december i had barely bught our little yorkie, he was 8 weeks!! too little i know!! and you know that age yorkies look really small. well my wife like all girls post a picture of him at myspace and one of her friend came up with this, check it by yourself!! http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/inde...ageID=23916806 in case the link dont works this is what this stupid friend say: -------December 25, 2007 10:02 PM how cute! iam dying to get one of these dogs idk about yours but the one that i want is a mini teacup yorkies and thoes are more expencive though cuz they only weigh up 2 5 pounds!!!! but then again CUTE!!! ---------- I mean come on , if you are gonna buy one at least do a little resarch about it and then do it!! and plus dont be opening your mouth just to show up that you are so ingorant!!!!!!! sorry but she got me so mad!!! |
 there are 2 really tiny yorkies down the street from me. And when I and a friend of mine were walking ours (mine is 5.6 lbs, and her's is 9 lbs) the man said "oh my god what do you feed them - they are so big..."... How silly |
when people say to me that my yorkie is fat, i tell them so are you, so keep moving |
6 lbs is hardly large. Some people talk without knowing much. My pup is 6lbs and someone asked me if he was a teacup. I told them that there was no such thing as a teacup but it was just a term that has become popular for the tinies and they looked at me like I was crazy. Don't upset your self over people like this. Ignorance is rampant everywhere on all subjects. Some people think the bubble they live in is the standard. |

Well it's those peoples mentalities that is making for such unsafe breeding conditions. Breeding for smaller smaller smaller....so sad little babies... :( |
Conner is 10 pounds, and people always ask me if he is a silky. I love his size. He plays rough with my husband and plays nice with mama. |
My baby weighs 3 pounds, and still some women at the pet store told me "I love Yorkshire terriers! I see you got a toy yorkie probably, because I am gonna buy me a teacup yorkie, they are really small!" I did not know what to say  Some people really take things literly. If a dog is called a"tea-cup size", then he/she is supposed to be able to fit in the tea cup! I guess they do not understand, that the photos they see online, where dogs are sitting in a cup - are just photos of small puppies, and when those puppies grow up, they will be bigger, and would not be able to fit in a cup! Just ignore comments like that. You know that you have the prettiest, and the smartest babies in the world! We love them sooooo much, no matter what size or color, or age they are! :) |
i have a 10 pound yorkie.. well hes 10 pounds now cus he gained 2 pounds he is technically fat adn needs to lose weight, but everyone always goes.. OMG HES SO SMALL!! and then i think, what would they say about a standard yorkie  |
It ANNOYS me when people are like this!!!! One time at Petsmart we saw two yorkie puppies and I commented on how cute they were to the owner. Instead of saying "Thanks" or "So is your yorkie" or anything that MOST other petowners would say she shoots back with "this is as big as their going to get". I felt like saying "I'm sorry did you misunderstand me? I said their cute, I don't care about their size.." I know this is OT..but ugh Rocky's sitting on my lap and he just farted as I was typing this:eek: It smells :thumbdown |
Some people can be even more rude to the extent of telling you how theirs is not only smaller, is also much better looking than yours, I find that very disrespectful. It does make me mad at first but now I am soooo used to it. My yorkie is 10 pounds and is still small to me and it doesn't matter if he is bigger/smaller, cuter/uglier I still love him the same. |
I have a range on my babies...lol...My Max is a small 10 lbs...and perfect:p ...Lucy is a huge 3.5 lbs:p ...and perfect and Missy is now a big 4lbs:p ...and of course perfect. They are perfect because they are mine. ;) I think they are like people. I am 5'10" 128 lbs(built like my father) my sister is 5'3" and 140lbs(built like my mother). None of us are exactly like any one else and no one can predict how big or small we will be. When people say "OMG how can he be so big and the girls be so small???" I look at them like they are stupid. Just ignore the stupidity...they know not what they say...lol:D |
Here's a different take on it: I think the small Yorkie/"teacup" thing just mirrors the obsession in this country with women having to be emaciated/skin and bones to be considered beautiful. It's the same kind of crazy thinking that super-small is somehow better or more valuable. I have a "small" Yorkie and at one time prayed he would bulk up a bit for the sake of his health (he had a tough puppyhood because he was so tiny). Now that he's a little meatier (but still a shrimp!), I feel better. People are nuts! |

My only response...is in my head. ;) |
People who put others' down are very insecure and only do it to make themselves feel better......just ignore her. You have 2 yorkies to love and that love you........maybe she was jealous! |
Dayzee the teapot Yorkie is 11#; Bailey the Havanse is 10#. The Biewers range from puppy to 7.5# and I get: They all have different colors!! |
I know, Rickles weighs 10 pounds (when I got him he weighed 7 pounds but you could count his ribs) he isn't fat at all he is just perfect and I don't have to be so afraid if he gets a little rough like the tinies. My puppy is 8 months old and weighs 7 pounds and I hate to admit it but he is a little chunky but that's ok because he and Rickles play together all the time and if he were too tiny I would have to worry. I love my boys and am very proud of how beautiful they are. When people comment about my boys being way bigger than their yorkies I just consider how ignorant they are. |
