OMG!!!! 3 Hawks at once!!!!! OMG! My heart is completely coming out of chest!!! I was right outside my back kitchen door with Buddy (10 pounds) and Lucy (3 pounds) sitting and playing in the grass. (NO leash on them) All the sudden I heard this horrible LOUD swalking/sceaming noise coming straight toward us!!!!! I immediately reached and grabbed little Lucy....I wasn't worried about Buddy because he is a little tub. Three hawks were fighting and racing to see who could get to Lucy first !!!!! When I realized what was happening I stuck Lucy under sweat shirt. Two of the hawks flew away (to a tree near by) but one was relentless....he was determined to get Lucy. The dang hawk was circling above my head swalking!!!!!!!!  OMG....if I had not of grabbed her when I did they would of gotten her!!! I feel like I am having a heart attack....I have never been that scared!!!! I was just searching online this morning for a COVERED outdoor playpen for her. This is the one that I found (the bottom can be used as a cover) Does anyone have one of these? http://www.pets-warehouse.com/Vpasp/...62&zmap=260009 |
That is very scary. I am glad you were all able to escape. I am very nervous letting ours out many times for this very reason. |
 OMG I got chills just by reading your post. Thank God that little Lucy is OK. You could never be too careful with your babies when it comes to hawks. They could have gotten to her in a blink of an eye. Good luck in finding a pen, I would be too after a scare like that. Try and relax I know your nerves must be a mess. Hugs...Pris |
Omg that is freakin scary! Do you have a back yard? I would def. have a covered playpen if i were you, that's a good idea. Hawks are scary! |
What a terrifying thing to happen! SO glad Lucy is safe. :) You could try looking at what "Jeffers" pet supply has for playpens at www.jefferspet.com Or maybe even go to a "Home Depot" or "Lowes" and get a roll of wire fencing and some metal ground stakes and make a simple covered play area for Lucy. |

PLEASE, PLEASE everyone be careful....all this happened within a blink of an eye!!!! |
PHEW that IS scary!!! |
SCARY:eek:!!!! I'm so glad that you were right there and scooped Lucy up! Thank God she's okay. The covered pen is a good idea:thumbup: I should get one too. A while back, there was a hawk or some other huge bird circling our yard every time I took the girls out:eek: When I would go back inside, the bird would park itself on a tree in my back neighbors' yard, then it would start circling as soon as we went outside again. |

Wow, how scary!! I would get something more sturdy. I believe they make tops for the larger exercise pens for dogs (the ones with thicker bars). |
I have an exercise pen and I was thinking of ordering the wire cover, but the other covers would work too. Here is a link... http://search.stores.ebay.com/For-Ha...dNTQ29QQsofpZ0 |
OMG , glad your baby if safe, we got the same problem with Hawks, as there is allways a couple thats hanging around, probebley dont help when neighbors let their chickens roam around  we also have lots of coyotes and now a cougar that we have to watch for  Mine are never ever of leash and when we go for our walks , my eyes are everywhere....scary ! |
That is so scary! I am glad your little Lucy is okay |
omg that is scary.happy you got her in time:) i have the same problem here in the summer.i have a fenced yard but i see them up flying around and i even called our local DNR and they said not to worry the birds only swing down for dead things????? i didnt believe him so i keep an eye on them at all times!!!! |
ohhhh wow how scary!!!!!!!! thank God you were able to grab her on time!!!!!!!!!!! |
OH my goodness! A cautionary tale... |
oh my gosh!!! so glad you were able to scoop lucy up and keep her safe! i would be crying too! :( |
I don't like hawks....I had a similar incident recently. I'm glad everyone is ok!! |
This is my biggest fear with my Lucy. I'm so glad you didn't have a tragic ending! |
omfg!!!! i am so glad you were able to get her in time!!!! BIG HUGS! |
Are you in the city or out of town? We have to be VERY careful when Addy goes to the ranch with us, my girlfriend usually brings her 2 maltese. The two little white dogs just draw the preditory birds out. It is very scary and you can't let your guard down for a miniute! The playpen is a very good idea. |
Oh gosh, the hawks around here are HORRIBLE...I'm sure it's similar down in Charlotte. I don't let mine out of my sight for a second because of them...and I'm still so paranoid. |

Yes, that would be the case for BUZZARDS. Hawks will scoop up and kill living animals though - rabbits, cats, small dogs. My problem is I really can't tell them apart..... no matter how many times my husband tries to describe them to me. So if I see a big black thing circling around our property, Tatum goes inside. If it's a buzzard, oh well..... took the safe route. |
That WAS a close call. To close for comfort really. It's a good things that hawk did not come after you knowing you had it's dinner! You never know what they are capable of doing when food it involved. Please be extra careful. I see them flying everyday where we live. Buddy looks up at them and barks but there's no way they could ever get him off the ground. Beside he's always on a leash. You YT'ers with little ones, you just can't be too careful in this case. |
Okay that is seriously scary! I can't even imagine. I'm glad you were able to grab her though and nothing bad happened. I think I would totally be getting that outdoor playpen if I were you! |
Hawks carry off and kill chickens and rabbits all the time, so why not a small dog? I worry about this all the time. Also, don't rule out the great horned Owl or the Bald Eagle. They are even bigger than most Hawks. My Matty isn't even 3 pounds and Kalina is under 6 pounds. Even if they couldn't carry off Kalina they could do plenty of damage on the ground with their talons. Everyone please be careful!!! I'm so glad your little one is safe and sound. |

gone, haven't seen any of them since. But I still don't ever leave them unattended out there, trouble lurks all around! |
Even with a leash on great damage can be done. If the hawk does pick the dog up when it is on a leash, what happens to the dog when the hawk reaches the end of the leash as it flies off? What damage would be done by the talons? What would happen if the hawk let go of the dog and the dog dropped back to the ground? These questions scare me so much that I am close to my furbabies at all time even when they are on-leash. Had one close call when a hawk came down within 8 ft. of Cocoa. The only thing that saved her was that our now-deceased Pommie barked and scared it. |
I am so glad you were able to pick her up in time!!! I think I would have had a heart attack!!! I am so glad your babies are safe! |
Thank God you were right there! I hope you can find something suitable with a lid for Lucy to play in outdoors. How scarey! |
