Before i got Dim Sum I was doing some reading and read that you should be careful of the dogs outside because of this same situation. I watch him everytime he goes out but never thought it would actually happen. So glad you saved her in time! |
It is so scary when something like this happens. Even with my 7 dogs on day last summer sleeping in the sun only little Chelsey at just over 4 lbs was moving around. My office overlooked my back yard at the time and I could watch then so I figured it was fine. Chelsey actually jumped on the picnic table wand was bird watching when a large hawk swooped down. I saw it coming and opened my window and yelled. This got all the dogs barking and our big guy Teddy saw the bird coming and charged barking! Less than 10 feet from Chelsey the bird decided Teddy and the other barkers we not something to mess with. The hawk stayed in the area for weeks. Needless to say my little ones are watched more carefully now. Just having a secure yard isn't always enough. I happy you were able to prevent a tragedy too........ |
OH NO! I'm so glad everything worked out ok. I don't have one of the play areas that you asked about, but it seems like it would be a good option. We have a problem with hawks, owls, and coyotes where I live too, and we always have to be so careful before letting the girls outside. My husband calls the hawks "referees". He'll say, "the referee is out, and he called the game", meaning he spotted a hawk (or multiple), so the girls had to come inside - no more play time. The coyotes have been especially bad for us lately too - out during the daytime. We've seen about 9 coyotes at our house in the last week or so. And we live in the middle of CA...not the country! For that reason, the girls only go out with me now to walk to the mailbox and back, and I'm on high alert the entire time. This is a good warning to all of us to be extra careful! |
there are 2 ways i keep them safe i eather zip tie netting on the plastic x-pen or i have that graco play pen that has the dome on it and close that up so nothing can fly in and they cant jump out. i love love love that graco playpen. |
1 Attachment(s) oops for got the pic |
I have a 6x6 chain link kennel and I fasten a large tarp over it. It keeps them safe and the sun off. It is also light to move so you can mow. Good luck in finding something and stay safe. |

Oh how scary....mine have access to the yard while I am gone through the doggie door. I really think they are only out there to potty but now this is scaring the POO out of me. I may need to rethink this.  |
GREAT IDEA to protect from predators This is a very interesting outdoor playpen for our furbabies....the man made it to protect chickens from predators but I think this would be perfect for Lucy. I like the longer extended version with the cover at one end. When the link pulls up....scroll to the bottom to see the larger one!! What do you guys think? I think I like this!!! What a great idea!!! http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...en-us%26sa%3DN |
That's SO scary! I worry about that every day. When I walk them in our backyard (on leashes)... at least three or four times a week a hawk will fly overhead!! My Border Collie, Kady, always barks at the hawks which I am so grateful for. They will circle and almost hover...but not real close. I guess because I am yelling and Kady is barking. Thank God you were able to grab your baby right away! |
WOW How scary for you, Iam so happy all is ok. I have never seen any hawks around here, I would freak for sure. |
Holy Cow! That is sooooo scary! I'm glad you thought so quickly! My husband and I have talked about this over and over because there is a hawk that hangs around our house. While I love hawks, we've even hand raised them, I don't love them having my baby for lunch. Here's a pic. I snapped just a couple days ago from our side porch....I hope you can see the hawk in it. He's sitting at the end of our driveway nearest to our backyard. Nevermind, file too big. :( |

Call a falconer and see if they would be willing to capture and relocate them. |
that almost happened to me once too with my puppy.. and even now the hawks still come back :( |
omg that's crazy!! thank goodness you got to her first! i'm happy to hear that |
Oh my gosh!!! I am so glad you were so quick in getting your baby out of danger and thank you so much for posting this, I am a new owner and I was totally unaware of the danger from hawks and such  I am going to be much more vigilant when we are on our walks!!! |
Wow! What a close call!!!! I am so glad that you were right there and was able to snatch up little Lucy in time -- and I am really glad that they were intimidated by Buddy's size. I know you were absolutely terrified. We have had what I consider to be close calls, let the dogs out, they ran towards the fence playing and then I heard the hawk scream. I snatched the kids up took them inside and THEN saw the hawk sitting in a tree just above the fence where the dogs were sniffing. Even that was way too clsoe for comfort. Before anyone goes outside now, I always "scout" the treeline and the sky for birdies. |
 OMG that is so scary! I am glad were you right there and was able to grab Lucy. Yeah I would definitely get a play pan with the closed top. Whew I still have chills after reading that. |
Wow that was a close call, I can only imagine how terrified you must have been! We have a hawk that comes into our neighborhood, but never that close! Good for you that you were able to react so quickly and have your wits about you, I probably would have had a heart attack! |
Them dang hawks.... That was scary.. I'm so glad you and your babies are safe and well! I know when me and Cody James go for a walk around my apt. i see some in the sky and i immediately GRAB cody up and hold him in my arms and walk until their gone... |
I watched a show about these birds last night they called them raptors. I don't think because a dog is 10 lbs or so they are safe. Most of the things they caught on this show they killed on the ground. I have heard where just hitting them once can kill. Have you seen their talons? |
Oh, I got chills reading your story. So glad there was a safe ending (I can't say happy, because I don't think you've stopped shaking yet.) For those thinking about a covered x-pen... depending on the top that you use (ie., a tarp), we use binder clips instead of zip ties. They're much easier to get on and off and always reusable. So glad you're all okay! |
