| Questions about coats.. What determines a Yorkie's coat type and color? Can litter mates have different coat types and colors within the same litter? At what age can you determine a puppy's coat type and color?

| Genetics determine coat type and color...all depends on what type of dogs are in the puppy's pedigrees. Yes, you can get different variations of color and coat types in the same litter. I'm not sure how early you can tell coat type and color though

| I woud love to know what you find out... Ben & Barney are littermates....Barney has a soft coat but it feels kinda coarse...Yet it NEVER tangles....It is the weirdest thing....And then Ben has the silkiest hair I have ever seen...And he tangles so much it is unbelieveable....So their hair types are totally differ.... In the first pic....Ben is the smaller on(on the left) Barney is the bigger one In the sec pic....Barney after being brushed... In the 3rd pic...Bennie after being brushed... Bennie is now kept very short due to the tangles but I was always under the impression that the silk coat was easier to keep??

| Supposedly, a green eye flash when a picture is taken indicates a silky coat. A red eye flash indicates a cotton coat. But, I think there are variations in between. My Juju has a silky-feeling coat, but it sure likes to tangle real easily. And Betty has a coarser coat...no tangles. Both of their eyes shine red.

| I think cottony and wooly are the same thing. The correct coat type is a silky coat, but you will sometimes see modified silk coats in the ring too. Then there are cottony coats and even wirey coats.

I've been wonderig the same thing. Tucker is almost 6 months old. The hair on his head is breaking but his back is still black. His dad was more silvery, but his mom was darker, not black, but close. | |

| http://kingslegendyorkies.com/coatcolorchanges.htm Good website to explain the coats and color changes. Samson has a wooly coat on his body (which I love because it doesn't tangle!) and a silky head. Go figure, huh?
