Help! My yorkie snaps at people - YorkieTalk.com Forums

ok.. I need your help. Danger is 4 yrs old and he just doesn't like children. Well... he's not bad with kids until they start trying to pet him and he will pretty much snap at them. Not bite them but snap (ok.. almost biting). I just don't know what to do. We don't have any children, but my god children come over all the time and I have to put him in his crate. He's fine with adults but not children. But even with adults he'll snap but he adults just don't pay any mind to him. If children jump around he gets exciting and starts barking and chasing them. Should I get a trainer or something? Do i need to take him to "man's best friend" (that's a training school here in Houston). I wish he was more sociable. We've been thinking of getting another dog and maybe this might help him? I just don't know. HELP!

I would definitely have him work with a trainer or get some sort of thereputic socialization. Or you can just crate him whenever he is around kids I guess.
I am not good about advice on this. I am zero tolerance with my dogs about snapping.

he's just so weird. I thought I had zero tolerance too. I put him in his crate. But I want him to be more sociable. My husband and I will have kids in a few years and we want him to be able to be part of the family.

i can understand you want him to be a part of your family (furkids ARE family

) and it is great you are willing to do whatever you can to make that happen!

i would definitely suggest a trainer or some sort of doggie schooling ... he is only 4 yrs old and you want him to be a part of your family for many years to come

I would definetly look into having someone who specializes in this type of behavior work with you and your baby. Especially if you want to have kids down the road. If you didn't plan on having kids it wouldn't be such a concern because you could just keep him away from the kids but that fact that you do plan on having kids means you need to try to change this behavior before then. If you don't address the problem now it will probably just get worse. Good luck!

I don't think I'd even keep a dog that did that. That's just a big problem waiting to happen.

I would see what "The Dog Whisperer" has to say about this subject, I think his training techniques are great and we have used them with Sarah(my mutt) and are now doing the same with Emma. Shortly after we adopted Sarah she started growling at our kids when they would try to move her out of a chair to sit in it. Turns out it was a dominence thing. So we began dominence excersises with her (ex. banned from furniture, on walks the kids were always in front of her, and when we came in from outside she has to wait and come in last). This training ended up being a miracle for us, now (She's almost 2) she knows who is boss and is a wonderfully behaved dog who loves kids! Hope this helps, if you commit to it the problem will be solved.

I completely think it's a dominationg thing with him. We watch Cesar Millan all the time too. I think I will have to take him to a trainer who specializes in that
