I adopted my 2 when they just under 1 1/2. Knew the original owner well & she had told me they were chipped. But I never got their AKC papers or micro-chip info as she had it packed away & I just always thought I would get from her sometime. She was one of my daughter's dance teachers & my daughter was at the studio 5-7 days a week, so always thought if heaven-forbid something happened to Bubba or Roxy, she would get the call. But I still wanted the papers (but how many times do you have to ask people ?) After the last yr with the huge rash of missing yorkies, I started bugging her fairly often about getting the papers. Well, FINALLY in Dec. I got their papers (Mind you, they will have now been with me 4 yrs 11mths) First thing I did was call the # on the microchip registry pages & tell them I needed to change the name & the address for the owner. The gal was as nice as could be, but told me THOSE NUMBERS EXIST BUT HAVE NEVER BEEN REGISTERED So all those yrs I thought mine were protected they weren't because I think the original owner didn't pay attn to the fact that she needed to send the paperwork in or register online. I think she thought going to the vet took care of everything. I took mine right off to the vet to have him scan for chips & thank God, they were there & matched, then registered online. The gal that helped me the first day, told me once you register them -- those files are activated immediately. I have never had one chipped myself, so I don't know how well vets explain this is a 2-step process. 1. GET THE MICROCHIP 2. REGISTER THE CHIP, DOG WITH YOUR INFO ONLINE OR BY MAIL OR PHONE!! Praying the pup is soon reunited with his family. Be sure to tell them about YT!!
