Sometimes the government HAS to step in for the better good of the animal. Not all people are capable of making the right decisions when it comes to the care and well being and reproducing of said animals.

If there were not such an abundance of animals being PTS today, the government would not have to get involved.

I am also not happy with the fact that the government can now tell us we have to use seatbelts, can't smoke in a car with a child, must neuter and spay cats. But somebody must step in, state or federal.

If more people were responsible then the government would not step in...(I hope) Until there is no reason for ASPCA or animal control...I will happily take their help.

Everybody should have to have a cat license or spay and neuter their cats, and they should go around cities spaying and neutering strays. There are FAR TOOO many cats that are homeless... We need to start controlling the feline population, then work on the dogs too.

I agree with this. In my neighborhood there are alot of cats kept outside. They reproduce and the cycle continues. Everyone is not as responsible with cat ownership as people are on here with dog ownership

I agree that I don't like the gov't intruding and also I grew up on a diary farm and where do they have to ask for cats. Cats get dropped in the country ... make their way to farms and multiply like mice. IMO farmers should be one of the first to get theirs altered. And in the city... if their are no strays.... I just wonder what the mice and rat population would do and where disease would be. Where I live now their are no strays. I have never seen one. That is quite unusual. But, there was a news story in D.C. the other day about a giant rat jumping out onto the sidewalk and jumping into a baby stroller and attacking a baby. Stray cats keep this in check. So I am kind of torn. People always take to feeding them. But I have never seen a starving cat. They are hunters and very resourceful... feeding them takes away that natural hunting instinct and if you feed them... you should take them to a rescue organization.

All in all, I think the idea is great but I am concerned about gov't having control of everything we do in our homes. I just don't know. I think if you give the gov't an inch... they tend to take a mile. Imagine how if they controlled the breeding w/ who got licenses and who didn't what that would do to the price of pupppies. Your 1500 dollar yorkie would suddenly become your 5000-10000 dollar yorkie. Hmmmm. I think that would limit a lot of people on this board from having thier precious babies. Plus all it would do would be encourage an underground breeding population... which would probably be worse than the pupppy mills of today.

I don't know... just my thoughts on the subject.

:( I live on a small hobby farm and we have over the last couple years found several FROZEN litters of baby kitties....so sad...
People assume that we live on a farm. Drop their cats off here.

Cats should be licensed just like dogs.
Someday maybe even micro chipped or perm . tagged like other animals
So not only could lost pets owners can find them BUT they can be prosecuted for abandoning poor animals!

I'd be fine with paying 10,000 for a well-bred yorkie from a reputable breeder if that meant I'd be saving millions of dogs and cats from being euthanized each year...

I guess brokers sure would lose a lot of their breeders though...

I have mixed feelings about this type of thing. I mean it really does sound like it would be a great solution to control the cat population. However people that are responsible pet owners already have spayed or neutered their cats and those are the people that would also license them or report that they owned them. The irresponsible people who don't bother to spay or neuter will hide that they own them and then they will get pregnant and then they will of course abandon or kill a litter of kittens because they have no way to try to sell or give them away without letting it be known that they had them in the first place.

I also don't want the government making decisions like this for me, and it has nothing to do with breeding as I have all of my animals spayed (they are all girls) and do NOT want them in heat :)

SOME farmers may run ads for cats.
BUT most dont ....
We do get cats sometimes. have them UTD on shots and care for them .

Then theres those who just drop off their cats and kittens ,which we find squished on the road,lots of times.One time a kitten still standing in the road by his littermates we saved...

Or as I stated in another post frozen kittens etc.
We dont know if these animals are UTD on their shots...but you can bet a caring owner who cared enough to do that wouldnt just drop them off.
So chances are they can and will spread disease thru our animals in the barn.

I know several that have been here for over 20 years, and they have told us we shoot them on site. I was shocked~!
They said well just wait till they make all your animals sick and you lose a lot of them. You'd shoot them too.

Also cats will NOT go up against a big rat.They will eat mice , rabbits and other things...but i've seen cats run from barn rats!

I wish I knew who had dropped off all the cats and kittens I've seen hurt, dead or frozen.
Shame on them....Did they really think they were doing a good thing by dropping them off at a farm?

The breeding of cats is way out of control. I agree. But there has to be a better way to keep the population under control than to force innocent people to put their pets through a surgery that they don't want to have done. We have a Constitution for a reason and we do have rights. This goes right along with the laws trying to force parents to medicate their children in a certain way (like forcing to vaccinate even when the parent believes the risk outweighs the benefit). The rabies vaccine forced on all dogs in enough for me (but human lives are in serious danger without it..and not just the owners). And if a Yorkie was $10,000 then only the wealthy could have them and I wouldn't stand still for that to happen.

I don't know how anyone could stand to own an unaltered cat...it may be manageable in dogs, but a total nuisance in cats.

Inside cats: Females CONSTANTLY go into heat...they basically stay in heat until bred. Males spray everything

Outside cats: Females are bred constantly...producing a ton of kittens which in turn multiply themselves. Males constantly breed females - they roam and fight other males. Unaltered cats do not last long outside on average

Unaltered cats are a complete nuisance...I can only understand having one if you are a cat breeder. At least female dogs only go into heat once-twice a year...and there are leash laws so dogs *shouldn't be roaming*. There are no leash laws for cats...

There is no reason to not alter a cat unless you are purposely breeding them. Not only for health benefits, but also because unaltered cats are VERY hard to live with
