That's the weird thing....the only birds I usually have around here are Ravens, and they are primarily scavengers. My ravens are well fed too....I give them my old left-overs. I swear I'll make a head-dress out of hawk feathers, LOL. |
OMG! not far from me. I hear this is a record year for HUNGRY hawks in the desert areas of CA. We have seen one swoop down in our yard while the babies were out there. Thank goodness Mike was right there to grab them up. I have seen them hanging out in the neighborhood. Shoot even last weekend while in San Diego, We were getting on the 8 freeway off of Camino Del Rio (near hotel circle in Mission Valley) and there were 2 of them hanging out on the stop lights. One swooped down right in front of the hood of our car as we were sitting there. It didn't dawn on me at the time that they may have seen our babies inside with us. They were in the console car seat. |
After reading this....I thought I should tell you about Jax's experience.....we live in the woods & the neighbors (we can't see them), put in a chicken coop-this attracted Red Tail Hawks to build 3 nests in our trees & a cougar to live behind our house.....this was a terrifying summer for us...all the turkeys & chickens have now been gobbled up & we haven't seen anything for awhile....I guess the food source is gone...all we have left is the taxidermist that lives through the woods on the other side....We had to be so cautious w/Jaxon and it was a crap shoot every time we took him out.....I am glad you smacked the crap out of that bird! I wanted to shoot our Hawks, but my Hubby said they are endangered....yeah, especially with me around |

omg is your baby ok,so glad you were there to fight that beast away from your baby,i would do the same I wouldn"t care if they are endangered either. |
Wow how scary! I am glad your baby is okay |
Holy CRAP! I live in AZ and I never see hawks, but I know they are out there. Marcel is 3 pounds so a hawk could snatch him up in no times. This is a good reminder, so thanks for sharing that scary story. |
OMG!! I worry about that every day! They are flying around here all the time. I never, ever have little Juju off her leash. If one got her, I swear I'd fly after it and EAT it! That's how insane it would make me! |
Good thing you were there to fight the bird. Good for you!!! I have hawks and a fox that come in our yard - however, I am always careful when going outside and mostly take mine out on leashes. However, if any of those creatures tried to take my baby, I would kill it - I feel the same way - I love all animals, but not any that are trying to take my babies. |
The lady that cleans my mom's house was telling us that one of her clients in Yorba Linda, Ca had 2 small Yorkies that were BOTH grabbed by ONE hawk!! They never saw them again. So now, when she cleans anyones house that has small dogs and they ask her to put the dogs outside when she cleans...she won't! She takes our Bella outside to go potty and stays right with her when she is there cleaning and we aren't home. She's a good house cleaner! |
Scary! I'm so glad you're furbaby is okay! I have a totally fenced in yard, and up until year before last, I let my furkids play out there for five minutes or so unleashed. Then, one day I was outside with them and was talking to them as they romped around. I went to retrieve the mail from around the corner of the house and my neighbor accross the street (I'm in the city, but with a treed backyard) said "Hey, did you see that huge bird?". I turned around to see a large shadow move quickly accross the backyard. I screamed and the dogs came running. Once they were in the house I stepped back out onto the deck and saw a large hawk perched up in a very tall tree, glaring down. That was the last time my furkids went outside w/o my hands connected to them. When I got Figgy, the breeder told me of a woman that lived a couple of houses away who was exercising her one and only furbaby in her fenced yard and she went in to answer the phone. She heard a screech and looked out the ran outside...she watched in horror as her precious furbaby airborne, grabbed by a hawk and lifted off to a nest she could see in a distant crop of trees....now that's what nightmares are made of..... |
Oh my gosh! That's so scary but I have to say I couldn't help laughing at the visual image of you beating the snot out of that hawk with a broom. You go girl. |
HOLY S**T!!!! These stories are terrifying! I'm not sure if there is a threat of this in the UK, I have never heard of anything like this here anyway, we have crows but thats about it. It must be a constant worry for you guys.:( |
Ok I admit I don't really know what jacked up means??? Some body wanna tell me? |
See this is why Parker and I have limited time outside I am so scared of ANYTHING and getting him especially in AZ I have see all kinds of crazy wildlife out here! I am so glad you gave that bird what it had coming, maybe you scared it to never come back!!!:) Poor Peanut was probably scared out of his mind, good ting mommy was there to rescue him!! |
