are yorkies ok for people with allergies

i want a dog but im not sure if a yorkie is ok for my home . no one in my home has allergies but some of my aunts and uncles do have bad allergies and i want them to be ok when they visit my home i do not belive in putting away animals i do have 2 cats so i guess i may have to put them away im just not sure what to do so are yorkies ok or am i going to have to put her up when i have some people over

There are several allergens associated with dogs. Saliva & hair mainly. You may read that there are dogs that are hypoallergenic. Not really. My daughter has asthma and she is allergic to animal saliva (see above link). I'm allergic to the fur of dogs but not to yorkie/maltese hair. I get all clogged up & sneezy when I'm around a shepherd or spaniel. Like cats, in people with severe allergies to the animals, putting the dogs in another room will usually not help. My grandson had an asthma attack after being in our neighbor's back yard for an hour at a picnic last summer. They have a golden and 2 border collies and the dogs were in the house the whole time but the allergens were in the yard.

I CAN ONLY SPEAK FOR MY FAMILY. We have a grandson who is 7 years old and has allergies to everything....dogs, cats, grass, food, he takes breathing treatments and also takes shots. Also we have a brother in law with severe allergies also.......... so we were blessed with 2 in our family. Since we have had Seth and Sasha my grandson sleeps with us and Seth and Sasha he has NEVER had a problem. Dr. Bland has even told Amie (our daughter) if you get a dog get a yorkie. As for Steven (BIL) when he is here Seth and Sasha are all over him and he does not have any problems either.

My Mother suffered from COPD and we had to make absolutely certain that there was no danger to her from Toto. Her doctors were consulted and Toto passed with flying colors. She and Toto were very close and when my Mother died in 2006, Toto grieved for her like a child and still looks for Mother when she is in her house.

I think yorkies pose a lesser risk than other dogs, but it really depends what kind of allergies the person has.

Some people will just sneeze or itch, and others (like myself) develop asthma and have a hard time breathing around allergens.

I'm personally allergic to dander and saliva so I chose the lower dander breeds, but still have to take 3 daily medications, so it really is a gamble.

Also -- allergens can change and grow over time, so what you may not be allergic to now, you can be in the future (I'm dealing with this right now).

But if it's just for short visits I would *guess* your family would be fine coming over, since they don't have long term exposure

I have allergies and asthma and I am fine as long as i'm around a dog or cat with hair...if they have fur forget it...i swell up!

It really depends on the person, and how they maintain their pets. When my nephew visits, he loves to play with my cat but he is allergic. The cat usually runs away from him anyway, but the fact that she has free roam of the house and her hair is everywhere he still gets allergy symptoms.

I'm very allergic to cats but I am able to go to my friends house and it doesn't seem to bother me. My in laws however also have a cat and sometimes it bothers me at their house. I think the difference is that even though my friend has 2 cats, she has hardwood floors and is always cleaning. My inlaws have a neat house as well but they have carpeting in most of the house. I think the allergens tend to stick to carpets and furniture more so you might be able to help by changing those things. Also perhaps leather furniture versus fabric. Just my thoughts.

My Grandmother and my mother have a hard time being around my pup. After an hour, my Grandmother feels like she can't breath. My mother has to be careful touching him and then touching her face because she gets all itchy and her eyes start to water.

Yorkies have hair not fur so they are usually ok for people with allergies

I have allergies to dogs...mine don't bother me. And 1 of them sleeps with us...right against my chest

thanks for info i was torn with a few breeds like the bichon and toy poodle and maltese but i also like the yorkie so ank you for the info
