A good show yorkie? what would you consider a good show yorkie? |
CartersMom recently posted a site to link us to the best yorkie champion for 2004. I will try to find it and post it. The doggie looks lovely and from time to time she has pups available. |
Show Quality? What I look for in a yorkie that I would like to show is first Additude, if they do not have outgoing attitude and are more shy or timid they are not a good show prospect. Second I look at the structure, topline, ear set, tail set, bite, gait, knees and rear angulation. If all those characteristics pass I then look at coat. I try not to put to much into the pedigree of the dog, as some dogs have pedigrees out of this world but the quality of the dog is poor at best! I also hate to mention this but just because a dog is being shown or is a Champion does not mean its conformation is good!! I have seen many yorkies in the show ring that I myself would NOT even use in my breeding program let alone show! I have also learned that the dog show world is VERY political and sometimes it is not the dog that wins, but the person holding the lead! JMO.. I was told by a yorkie show breeder one time to pick three characteristics I cannot live without in my yorkies.. She said give them three strikes, if they have three strikes keep looking as this is not the dog I want to purchase! Melanie |
TYAVA.com This is the site for the champion showyorkie. |
The best thong to do is to study the "breed standard" and then try to find a yorkie that matches the standard as closely as possible. No dog will havee ALL of the perfect breed standard qualities bu te closer you can get the better. Good luck. |

understand that the correct size of a show yorkie is based on the weight. how about the height and the length of the body? what is the maximum height and etc? |
Quote:
General Appearance: The body is neat, compact and well proportioned. Body: Well proportioned and very compact. The back is rather short, the back line level, with height at the shoulder the same as at the rump. If you want to read an in depth study of the standard you should get The New Complete Yorkshire Terrier, Joan Gordon. |
will check out the book you mentioned, LvMyYorki. thanks! i am getting my first pair of show yorkies. getting from a well reputable breeder. am just trying to find out more information from here. perhaps i can post pic here and you can tell me what you think of the dogs. possible? i really appreciate all comments. ok? |

You will love the book especially if you are showing Joan Gordon is the Queen of Yorkie Showing, Breeding, You-Name-It and she and her sister did sooo much for the breed here in the States. Its so interesting to see how the kennels and lines over here have evolved and which lines they originated from! What lines are your pair from? Are you sooo excited to start showing? That will be so much fun! |
Can't wait to see the pictures. How old are the yorkies and who is your mentor if you don't mind my asking? |
hi my mentors are arlene from pure silk kennel and jesus from guemart kennel. the boy (about 6 months old) will be shown and finished his american, mexico and international champion before shipping to me. as for the girl (about 8 months old), i am still considering to show or not before shipping to me. |

A good show yorkie Study the standard of the breed and then study the standard of the breed again. Then undertsand that the perfect Yorkie had never been bred and never will be. You must then try and meet the standard in what you show and breed. You may have bred a litter and just not like the head on one of those puppies but another breeder will see nothing wrong. This may be the puppy that is still good- has potential that you offer to another breeder/show person. In most cases you always keep what you think is the best for yourself. You must also understand that each judge has studied that standard and has their own opinion. That opinion will come into play in the show ring when the judge compares the YTs against each other. He/she will have to determine which fault or faults the YTs in the ring have and which one is closest to his/her interpretation of the standard. If you have been to a show- you have seen a judge give the win to a dog/bitch on one day and have the same YT group there the next day and a different YT win under a different dog. Grooming has a lot to do. A novice owner may not be able to groom the YT as well as a handler or a seasoned show person. They may not know how to make a fault not so noticable. Politics has always been a factor and will always be, A novice may have a wonderful YT- be new to the show world and not win just beacuse so and so is showing a dog today. The handlers have a advantage and so do the seasoned well know breeders. Attitide- there are a lot of YTs in the show ring because of who the owner/breeder is. They have a Ch. Sire or Dam so here they go- and the YT hates the ring. They show beacuse we want them to. You want an attitude that says - Hello, here I am look at me- don't you think I the prettiest thing that you have ever seen. Being a show dog is demanding and can be hard on a dog. Look at all the time riding in the car/outside shows that are hot/ all the down time/ the waiting and the grooming. To me a show dog must be able to pass his/her good genes on to another generation. You may have the number one yorkie in the world- but if you can't get good qaulity puppies out of him/her then what do you have? A lovely animal to look at. I try and look at confirmation first- I love good movement and will then try and put the whole package together as best I can. Always looking for improvement. Wnalegria |

I would say one that meets all Show Dog Qualities. |
one of the best webpages that describes "judging a yorkie" IMHO explains many issues, gives you a lot to think about! http://www.yorkiebaby.com/judge.html |
also someone asked about height and length...Although the AKC standard doesnt mention a dimension "well proportioned and very compact" the UK standard mentions not to exceed 9" X 9"... |
