Hurricanes Well hurricane Dennis is headed this way. Right now It looks like it will hit Pensacola. But as big as it is Tallahssee will get a big piece of it. This will be Asia's first hurricane so I hope she does Ok. Is there anything I can do to make this storm easier on her? I don't want to coddle her to much because Hurricanes are just a part of living in Florida, so she needs to get use to them. I hope everyone living in the path of this storm comes thru it unharmed. I know that a lot of people are still trying to recover from Ivan last year. My prayers are with you all. |
Redfrog, I feel for you, I am in Port St Lucie and as you well know, we were hit twice dead on last year, I didn't have Pita then, but all of my other animals survived and some of them had to stand out in it!!  My brother and his family are in Key Largo and I am praying it doesn't jog to the east on it's way on thro the keys!! If you want to evacuate we are home all weekend!! |
Redfrog: You're staying? I've made our reservations for Lufkin, Texas at a Holiday Inn that is pet friendly and I'm south of New Orleans by about 45 miles (northern Lafourche Parish). We'll decide during the day today whether we'll leave but it will be determined on storm track predictions. I've lived with hurricanes all my life (43 years) but I've learned that our coastlines aren't what they used to be and we would never be able to survive a storm like Betsy or Camille in today's world. After Juan, I vowed I would never stay for a hurricane again -- and that was almost 20 years ago when my son was a year old or less! Best of luck to you! |
Please stay safe everyone! I'll be thinking about you. |
Im originally from Florida so I know just how bad the hurricanes can get. I now live in virginia and we dont get hit with them as often, so my yorkies havent yet delt with that. They have however, delt with horrible thunderstorms where the power goes out. They dont like it to much, but you can take their minds off of it if you try. My babies tend to shake when it gets real bad, BUT if you have treats on hand as well as their favorite toys, it does help. I would suggest prepairing an "emergency kit" for them. Get some treats, toys, and maybe a radio (with batteries). The music from the radio will drown out the storm a bit which makes it less noticable for them. That in turn helps them to relax and enjoy their treats and toys. Good luck and let us know how it goes! |
taje thanks for the offer. Tallahassee is in the bend of the state, so we don't get a lot of direct hits. We have never had to evacuate before. so unless this thing makes a major turn east we should be Ok. The worst we have had in the past was back when I was 19 (I'm 41 now). We lost power for a week and have a well which whens no water either. I though I heard they are evacuating the Keys? Dennis is passing by first thing in the morning. I hope your brothers family will be OK. |
I do the radio too!!!...when the windows are open and there are kids out late at night Maximus of course is on patrol and alerting me that soemone is close by...lol..if I turn the radio on he is able to fall back asleep...TO ALL IN FLORIDA and the Path of these Storms please be careful and keep us updated ...prayers are with you from us in NY (we only get heavy rain here)!!!!... and keep yourselves and your furbabies as dry and comfortable as possible!!!Oh! and STOCK UP!!! (I'm a stock up nut...lol) |
My Prayers are with all of you in Dennis's path. Stay Safe |

LOL good to know im not the only one that babies....my baby's lol. The radio really does help them, and it will help you as well. When there's no power you tend to get bored very easily. You're just sitting there... May as well enjoy some music. Yes DEFINATELY stock up. Do you have a generator? Living where I am (in the mountains) I have no choice but to always keep food stocked. The grocery store is a 30 min drive away. So I keep my fridge, freezer, deep freezer, and pantry, stocked at all times. Only thing that sucks is, I have not yet invested in a generator, so if we lose power, I loose a LOT of food. |
All of you in harms way and inland, take care and don't take chances. We'll be thinking of you. |
That's what I need. The generator. I must remember to take the one from work home with me just in case. It very hot with out the a/c so at lease I can run a fan. Got plenty of CDs for the radio and battries. I stocked up on hurricane supplies during the tax free week. |
Awesome! Sounds like you're set! This is gonna sound really bad, but, when the power goes all, I freak! Not because its dark, or no air, but because I have no access to the internet lol Im such an internet junkie lol |
I don't have a computer at the house so I can only go online when I'm at work. If this storm hits on monday or tuesday, I'm not coming to work. Thats to long without checking in to YT. |
No kidding! I HATE not being able to use my PC. That drives me insane. |
Oh my God. Dennis is up to 150 mile per hour with gust of 185. He hasn't even hit Cuba yet! This is not going to be a pretty one. |
This has the potential of creating devastation in its path. I wouldn't want to be you Redfrog! Lisa |
I think you are in more of the path than I am. I hope everything will be OK at your home. I'm glad you are going to bug out. |
You will be doing the right thing, by not allowing your concerns to show around your baby. She will be aware of enough as it it. We have family in Destin, so I know the concerns you have. Take care and remember "Heads Down" |
I am a U-haul dealer and just had to call in to the district office which is in Mobile. I was on hold for 30 minutes. Everyone is trying to get equipment to evacuate with. I'm glad people are taking precautions and leaving. I guess Ivan really scared everybody last year. Brenda, I hope your family in Destin is OK. |
My sister lives in Pensacola, so we're following Dennis closely. She got hit hard by Ivan last year and is in the path for Dennis. Thankfully, she came home this week to run a race with me. Last year, she got paid to for 3 weeks of "work" while she was home and the university for which she works shut down due to damage. She's supposed to return Monday, but is hoping for something similar to last year! Stock up on the Nutristat/cal, and make sure that you have plenty of fresh water just in case. I would also have a first-aid kit handy. Music would definitely be a good thing. I would also contact your vet to find out where he or she will be after the storm (if not in the office.) The office would probably be able to give you a very complete list of "hurricane musts" for your pet. Good luck and be safe. My thoughts are with those of you in Dennis' path. I hope you and your families (skin and fur) are safe from harm. |
Here is one link I found for Pet Preparation for Hurricane Evacuations . . . http://hurricane.accuweather.com/hur..._promotion.asp and another: http://www.coastalpetrescue.org/hurricane.htm |
Please stay safe everyone!!!!! |
Here's two more pet evacuation sites: http://www.humanebroward.com/educati...cane.htm#think http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=emergency |
Thanks for the links. Dennis has now hit Cuba. In the morning it will be right next to the Keys. |
I'm in Florida and we lost electricity for 7 days the last time we got hit. I thought I was going to die from the heat. I'm praying this one passes us by. |
I will be thinking about all of you that are in the hurricanes path. I sure hope this one weakens some before it hits. Be sure and let us know how things are going, so keep us posted. |
Fellow YTers, stay safe and we are all thinking about you today. |
To all of you in the path of Dennis-- stay safe!! I will say a little prayer for all of you!!! Lets hope and pray Dennis loses some of its intensity before he hits the US!!! |
I'm in Jax. we had 3 last year, our electicity was out for over a week. Now, compared to some, that was nothing but Chloe was a little one. What a nightmare. We live in a wooded area. I could not see her for potty and she could not understand what was going on. This time, off to a hotel for us. |
I pray all my YT friend stay safe, take care |
