It's just not something that interests everyone out there. There are lots of things that come with showing that are major turnoffs to some people. The travel, the training, the upkeep of a show coat alone is a full time job! Not to mention the time involved--not to say that breeding isn't time consuming, but when you add shows as well, it puts it at a whole other level. That doesn't mean that their goals in breeding is anything other than to produce quality dogs, they just don't choose to show them is all.

Some people have neither the money nor inclination to show. Nor do they have money to pay a professional handler two to three thousand dollars a month. I know one lady here that writes a professional handler a check for 1,500 every month plus another one at the end of the month for all his travel, food and etc expenses. She is not a member of YT but she "shares' her handler with a YT member and a couple of other people. They each pay the same amount.

I didn't read this whole thread so I don't know if this question has been answered. Does the CKC insist that the parents be registered to register the pups?

I want to breed but I don't want to show. I would breed to the standard but I don't want to go around the country just to go to dog shows. It is understandable why some may enjoy it but that's just not me. Handlers are way too expensive and it would be good to break even on breeding even without paying a handler.

What surprises me is how many byb's/hobby breeders/pet shops charge the same for their puppies as show breeders do when obviously a breeder who shows puts much more time and money into her puppies.

If puppies from byb's or hobby breeders registered with the CKC or other alternative registries were considerably cheaper, perhaps it could be argued that "you get what you pay for". It's unfair, though, when people are lead to believe that they are getting the same quality puppy for a similar price.

To get back on the original subject, that's why I don't like the CKC. I think the website is deliberately misleading, a lot of "smoke and mirrors" to make people think that they are getting something they are not. Why have a whole page about conformation, shows and judging when no events are actually being held? Or talk about how their preferred breeders must be breeding to the highest standard and then have 25% of their preferred breeders raising designer mixes? I think they count on the fact that anyone who even bothers to go to their website to see if there is a difference between CKC and AKC will just believe what is written and not bother to click on the links to learn more.

I think the one thing we have all agreed on is that anyone who is about to buy a purebred puppy needs to do a lot of research before selecting a breeder.

OK, now that point I definately agree with! That's where you get your unethical people that come in trying to make a living off of pumping out pups as fast as they can.:( I work when I do so that I have income to support my dogs (and bills and family), I don't breed to support my family.

I REALLY hope you weren't implying that my Bouncer was from a BYB b/c he in fact came from a very reputable, FANTASTIC breeder who I would drive to Florida and back again to get another yorkie from. And yes, she does show her dogs. One of them is actually doing some amazing things in the agility ring. Sorry, I just get EXTREMELY pissed off when someone tries to imply or tell me that Bouncer is "nothing" b/c he isn't from some snotty AKC breeder who thinks their better than everybody else. I'd take him AND his CKC registry anyday. I may have three AKC yorkies, one I did buy AKC. The other two were fosters, and honestly I ddin't give a rat's you-know-what about even registering them except just to have them in the Lost and Found program or whatever it is. Their my kids, not my "let me brag to you how much better my dog is than yours" pet. OK, off my soapbox now and gone from this thread. Just makes me MAD

No one said that all CKC breeders were bad...and in no way did anyone imply that a CKC dog wasn't as good of a pet as an AKC dog. :confused: And just because someone chooses to buy from a reputable AKC show breeder doesn't mean they think their dog is any better of a pet than anyone elses...no one is being snotty or bragging...this is just a thread about opinions and preferences

I reread the thread and think I found what you are refering to..where I quoted you and replied. You had said that registry didn't matter unless you were going to breed. My reply to that was to imply that it shouldn't matter whether you are looking for show dog or just a pet - you should using the same criteria when seeking out a reputable breeder. I think when I started replying I got off topic from what I meant to originally say though...in the beginning I meant to say what I just said above..but then I went on about looking for a reputable breeder even when just wanting a pet. No one should be buying from byb period, even if they just want a pet. I definitely didn't mean to imply your dog came from a byb. I wasn't directing that to you...just speaking in general about looking for a reputable breeder when looking for a pet.

as for why some breeders will not show their dogs just look at the german shepard. a true working healthy working shepard has a straight back and a long gait. a show shepard is expected to keep its back legs slightly bent so the back has a 10 degree slope from front to back, and when it runs it runs with its legs bent causing problems with the hips and joints as it gets older. show shepard are breed to look a certian way that is not functional as a working dog. a lot of good breeders will not show because of the elitist mentality of some show dog breeders when the dogs are as good as if not better than a show dog.

it's not the same species but the easiest example to use.

Actually you are correct that no one IMPLIED that a CKC dog wasn't a well bred dog - as you can see below we CKC owners were told implicitly that our dogs were guaranteed to be poorly bred (they later "restated" what they "meant" to say). I imagine that several CKC owners have been thouroughly offended by the guarantee that our dogs are poorly bred & the repeated implication that AKC dogs are better bred. As I have stated before AKC has puppymill breeders just like all the other registries - I made the mistake of purchasing one, he was the sweetest, sickest little boy & I spent $1,700.00 in VET bills in the 1st month alone & the AKC approved breeder still won't return my phone calls. I am not saying that all AKC breeders are bad, just like I am not saying all CKC breeders are good but I can see why CKC owners & good CKC breeders are getting tired of having to defend our babies & hearing "I will only buy/register with AKC" - :confused: actually if you think about it doesn't that statement imply that our CKC dogs aren't as good??

Oh my Gosh people. I love you all, but this is a site where people can express their opinions, and preferences. Some people prefer CKC, some AKC,

Yes, I agree. I just really love this site, and want to see everyone get along. I may not say too much, but I do look and read what people have to say. You are never too old to learn something new. :)
