EVERY registry can only guarantee so much and then it falls back to the honor and integrity of the individual breeders. There are stories on here all of the time of people who purchased AKC dogs that turned out not to be what the breeder claimed.
Not to mention that there are SOME instances where AKC does not require DNA testing--i.e. males who are not frequent sires. There are loopholes with ANY registry.

Unfortunately, you are very correct....kind of like the old saying goes: "A few bad apples spoil the whole bunch." As you pointed out, they do seem to be making efforts to improve...
Sadly, as I can attest, many who are 'honest' find the negative associations more than they are willing to deal with in the long run. After a while, you come to realize that no matter how hard you try, few will actually take the time to look past the negative to see the positive.

I know that they sponsor alot of agility events, which is where I met the breeder of my female, which was one of the positives that I found when searching.:cool:

While DNA and other requirements do help enforce the rules, every registry depends, to a certain extent, on the honor system. I know breeders (sadly) who wait until the last possible moment to submit their AKC litter regs so that they can choose a birthdate that makes the puppy's weight look good. I have an AKC male who looks like a poodle (he cannot be purebred by any stretch of the imagination). Even the AKC DNA registration for frequently used sires can be faked...who's to say which dog's cheek you swab?

My point is not that the AKC isn't good, the point is that NO registry can guarantee anything 100% either way. Saying that dogs from another registry are definitely the product of bad breeding is as incorrect as saying that all AKC dogs are well-bred.

I have to agree there are good and bad in all registries.

All I can say about this is to study, study and study some more and educate yourself when you buy. I only register with AKC and all my dogs are AKC registered and in good standing and healthy. If you do your homework and know your breeder then you should always have a healthy animal.

If I were looking to breed and show, I would only go AKC. Of course I would only buy from a reputable AKC exhibitor/breeder. If I was only looking for a pet, I would still only look at reputable breeders. CKC(continental) seems very iffy to me. I have to ask why anyone with an AkC registered dog would register with CKC(continental) unles they have lost the right to AKC privledges. The fees for AKC are not that expensive, so I just dont get it. So, then I ask, how is CKC(continental) registering dogs without papers. And, if AkC papers are supplied, how do they know those papers go to that dog? And if the dog has AKC papers, why register with CKC(continental)? And how do you find a reputable breeder through CKC(continental) when they dont have conformation shows or have any breed standards? Has anyone ever herd of a kennel inspection done by CKC(continental)?Does CKC(continental) ever fund canine research? Do they ever do canine public relations? Just wondering what the benefit it would be to go to another registry.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you or anyone else. I know from previous threads you are one to defend CKC reg. dogs because of your little one, and rightly so. I believe there are always exceptions, but in general, responsible breeders such as yourself are few and far between these days. I am referring to the unreputable breeders and puppymills I mentioned in my previous statement, and I should have been more clear about that. I apologize.

I also, as you did, emphasized that there are "dishonest breeders and poorly bred dogs with ANY registry" in my previous statement.

Once again, I'm sorry for offending.

You bring up many good points, most of which are topics that should be addressed with ANY breeder you are considering acquiring a dog from, regardless of registry. I can give my input on some of them based on my own personal experiences....

A CKC breeder I worked w/ bred AKC only for years. She began reg w/ CKC to participate in their sponsored agility events (how I met her) and eventually stopped reg w/ AKC, with whom she was still in good standing as I checked. I dual reg 2 of our males w/ CKC, just because. Sure that is not the case w/ all.

I know that they were for a while reg them based on witness testimony and pictures..."Open" registration. I don't know if they still practice this, don't care. I admit personally would question getting a dog w/ CKC only.

How can you be sure of this for any dog? (Unless you challenge it and the breeder is forced to prove it.)

The same way you find a reputable breeder in any other case. Ask around, get referrals. I met one at an agility event. As for breed standards, CKC follows the lead of the AKC set breed standards and promotes them.

Yep. I actually visited a lady who turned out to be a miller years ago before I acquired my first Yorkie. (Turned out she had about 50 dogs in a barn.) She had dog that were APRI, AKC and CKC. I reported her to all 3. Followed up w/ AKC and CKC and both had invoked disciplinary action against her, animal control took most of her dogs. (Shockingly, CKC acted and followed up with me first.) Also, I know that both ACK and CKC were very strict w/ breeders when working w/ my local shelter (where my aunt was an employee) when they would sieze Pits used in dog fights.

Thanks for your info Bama!:) I still dont get it if you have an AKC dog why you would want to go to another registry. To each their own. I was just wondering: how can a labradoodle breeder be a preferred breeder by the CKC? The labradoodle is not listed as a recognised breed by CKC.:confused:

Heck if I know...if you get an answer to that one, let me know!:p I can understand reg w/ CKC too so you could participate in their events, but I wasn't altogther sure why you would drop the AKC altogether--I know I dual reg two of ours, just to keep them the same as the female, but I didn't drop the AKC reg. I guess everyone has their reasons. To be quite honest, I never realized how much emphasis is put on one registry over the other until I started breeding myself. Then again, I don't consider myself as associate with those types of breeders that you find being frequently doubted and questioned on their ethics....:)

At least there is one good ethical breeder that uses CkC!! I hope there are many more like you, Bama.:) It just all boils down to doing your homework when getting a puppy.
