So scary!!!! Yesterday evening I brought Lexie to our vet for a wellness check up since we had just gotten her and I just wanted to make sure that she was okay, and keep her up to date on her shots. Well the first thing that went wrong is that the vet said that the breeder missed one of her puppy boosters so she is late on her second shot. That kind of scared me, but things happen. So then the vet went on checking everything and I brought up a scab that I noticed on Lexie's neck when I was giving her a bath. After the vet probed her scab and checked everything out she said something about ear mites under her breath and checked her ears and exclaimed, "OH MY! SOMEONE HAS DIRTY EARS!" I wasn't too surprised because her ears are so big.:p The vet said she wanted to look under the microscope at the dirt and literally seconds later she came back in and she that she doesn't need to look at it because when she was carrying the swab, she saw an ear mite crawling around. Well we got our shot and our ear mite medicine and left. Everything seemed okay and we went shopping for an hour or so. We then went home and she seemed a little tired, but she was still playing so I didn't think anything of it. While I was eating dinner my boyfriend told me that Lexie was climbing up his leg, so I looked at her and her eyes were completely swollen shut! Right away I picked her up and I noticed her breathing was very loud and labored so we ran out the door. I didn't even pick up my jacket. By the time we got to the vet in the next town over she was crying loudly in between breaths and her eyes were Santa Claus red and totally closed. I burst in the door BAWLING and the vet tech took her from my arms and rushed her in the back room. They started an IV, gave her an epi-pen shot in the rump, and gave her a shot of some steroid into the IV port. The vet came out after about 20 minutes with Lexie and said that she is going to be under observation for about 30 more minutes, but everything is fine. She had a counter reaction to the shot!! The vet said that within 30 more minutes, and she could have been dead from the swelling in her thoat! She was miserable all night and kept crying because she was so itchy and just didn't feel good. She was on Benadryl too so she was really drowsy and couldn't walk straight. It was TERRIBLE! I always thought that a counter reaction is something you hear about but always think, "OH! It will never happen to me!" Be warned, it happens! |
 How scary that must have been! Thank goodness you were with her when the problem started and were able to immediately get her some help!! I'm so glad she's going to be OK!! |
Oh, poor baby! I would have been a nervous wreck. What a horrible ordeal for all of you!! I'm so happy she's doing better and sending warm wishes your way. :) |
Wow what a scare but thankfully your quick action saved your baby. Max and I hope Lexie gets better. |
im glad shes ok!!! what a scare that must have been! poor baby. giver her kisses from all of us here at YT :) |
Wow...I've been in your shoes on that one before and that is some scary stuff! Make me wonder though...if this was her second series of shots, why didn't she have a similar reaction to the first one... |
Awww poor baby! Thanks goodness you got her there in time! please keep us posted! |
OMG poor baby, glad to hear she"s gonna be okay so glad you were there. |

I had a very similar situation. The first time I took Bauer for his puppy vaccinations, the vet said. If you notice any swelling of the face, vomiting or difficulty breathing, bring him back right away. Well . . . before we even got out the front door Bauer threw up then laid on the ground and sarted panting. I piccked him up and noticed his eyes were begining to swell. I ran him back to the nurse and they took him in the back to start him on benedryl. The doctor said he had an allergic reaction to the live cultures in the vaccine. They had to keep him for several hours, for observation. I was a mess. Luckily the reaction began before we left the vets office. So now any time he has a booster he has to have a shot of benedryl 15 mins prior to the injection. |
oh my god!! that sounds so scary, but glad everything is ok... good job on your quick thinking :) |
Lord I would have died. Tell you what don't worry about the ear mites. I had one who had that and she is ok now. |
omg that is REALLY scary! Good thing you reacted quickly! I'm so glad she is okay now, poor thing:( |
What vaccine was it, lepto? Vaccine reactions are actually lots more common than people think. |
awwws sorry to hear your frightening story....glad all is okay now :) |
How scary...I'm so sorry you had to go through that. :( I hope she is doing well, our thoughts and well wishes are with you and sweet little Lexie. :getwellso Take care, |
OMG - so glad you noticed and took action right away. How scary. That most likely means whatever shot she had, she should not have again. Make sure the vet records the severe reaction and do not let them talk you into giving it to her again!!! |
How much does Lexie weigh? Sunshine was only 1 1/2 lbs when we got her at 12 weeks and when she went in to finish her shots, the vet only gave her 1/2 a dose because she was so small. When she got her boosters last year (she is barely 5 lbs now) she had a reaction, so now she always gets Benadryl befor eher shots as well. |
Your dog is so lucky that you reacted immediately. How freakin' scary to be told that had you waited 30 minutes longer she would have been dead. It is thanks to you that she survived. |
Wow, what a horrifying experience for you and Lexie. I'm so glad she's better! |
Thank heavens she jumped up on your BF leg. It seems she knew she needed help. Poor Lexi. Thank heavens she is ok. |
Great post, it's alway good to be aware of these things. I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that. I'm so glad she'll be ok. |
If you know what vaccination it was, it would be great if you post for all of us. I know that there have been many dogs allergic to lepto and would be very curious to know if that was in there... I am glad you caught it early and she is all better now. Give her kisses from our fur-babies :p BTW-I always have my vet give my fur-babies only 1/2 of the vaccination and have luckilly never had any reactions (cross my fingers)...I will always do it that way. They all weigh under 5 lbs. |
I'm glad your little Lexie is going to be alright. I know you were terrified! |
I am so glad you were with her and noticed there was a problem and got her back in time. I always wonder why they send you right out the door after the vaccinations even at our DR's they do that. I had an allergic reaction to the Tetanus shot which I have never had a problem before so just because they are fine with it one time doesn't mean that they will be fine next time. I was told to be very careful because if I ever have to have the Tetanus shot again it can be fatal. Scarey stuff these vaccines. :( Deana Prestigeous |
so scary!!!! Well, the Vet should know that there could be a reaction. I will never leave right away when Tricksie gets shots after your story. Thanks for telling us. |
vet If your vet isn\'t very familiar with yorkies he may have given lepto. Most vet I know don\'t even give this because it is famous for these types of reactions |
How totally scary!!! Good thing you guys were around!! What if you would have been Christmas shopping or out to dinner, etc??? :( :( I am so happy she is going to be ok. Thanks for sharing---we all need to be aware that bad reactions to shots can happen. I didn\'t think about it before! |
Glad she is ok. Dixie just had her Rabies shot on Monday and I asked about the reaction and she said if she were to have a severe reaction it would be before we got out the door, any other reaction would probably be within a few hours just to watch her. SHe was ok though. |
Phew that was scary! Thank goodness you were around when it happened. Glad she is ok now. |
