| Hypoglycemia I am waiting for my first yorkie! She's a Christmas present from my husband. I can't wait to see her! I am just worried because everybody talks a lot about Hypoglycemia. My breeder talks a lot about that. How can I make sure my little 3lbs girl is okay? I know about nutrical... but I am not sure when to give her that... Help! thanks

| I was told by the vet and several breeders, that usually hypoglycemia doesn't happen much after 12 weeks..I always make sure I have karo syrup on hand..don't give it to her unless she gets lethargic and isn't eating or drinking. I'm sure she'll be fine..I've never had problems with any of my yorkies having it..i had a maltese that got it, but, I think she was younger than the breeder told me she was.. |

| How old is she now? She should be at least 12 weeks old, ideally even older, before you bring home a puppy expected to be that small or hypoglycemia can be a real problem. Do you know how much she weighs now? |

| puppy If she is 10 weeks old and weighs 3 pounds NOW.., she will most likely not be prone to the problem. Make sure she eats, has rest time, don't over do, keep some nutra cal on hand and give it to her for a week or so until she settles..good luck |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Just keep a close eye on her and make sure she eats every few hours. If not and she looks letahrgic give her the nutrical or if she seems stressed!! She is a cutie. I just brought home a 2.4 lb 6 month old and she wasn't eating enough to me so I gave her a little nutrical and mixed her kibble with a little wet food and she ate that right up. The key is to make sure they are eating.

| Can you have your breeder keep her another two weeks? Puppies are at the greatest risk for hypoglycemia between 9-12 weeks old. Not only that, but Christmas is perhaps the worst time to bring a new puppy home because it is such a busy time of the year. Here is some information about hypoglycemia: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body...oglycemia.html |
