X pen questions We do not have a fence around our backyard, but Gizmo loves to play outside. Our neighbors put up a small fenced area for their poms, but it's a nightmare to mow since it can't be moved. Please know that Gizmo will NEVER be outside unsupervised. This is simply so we can have a safe area to allow him to play off-leash for short periods of time with active supervision. So, I am researching Xpens since I know nothing about them. What size would I need? Which ones can panels be added to in the future to make it bigger? Is a door a necessity? What materials would be best? Can these be moved to mow or transport to a different location? If you have any suggestions or experiences to share, I would appreciate them. Santa keeps asking me what I want for Christmas, and this is all I can think of. :D Is this a good one? http://www.target.com/Gold-Panel-Exe...x%20pen&page=1 Thanks in advance. :) |
most pens like this can be added too. i have one like that and i to had thought about getting two more and connecting them so i can make a big one in the backyard for morgan to play in. Then i just bought 3 of these http://www.petco.com/product/100147/...le-Medium.aspx in the small variety (really light weight cable) and connected them to the patio. Much cheaper and she gets to run around without getting out of the yard. She never gets caught up in it or choked by running to the end and stopping short. |
Thanks for the info and the link. I really appreciate it. :) I really think I want a fence of some sort though since he loves to be off-leash. |

The ex-pens are great, and even keep my two "big" yorkies in. We have one set up around a small ornamental pond in our backyard, it's out there in all kinds of weather, and its held up great. We host "small dog club" in our yard one night a week in the summer, we stretch an ex-pen around the gate to our yard, and it acts like a second, saftey gate when people are coming/going with their furkids. Also, we take one with us when we go places, indoors and out. It works well. One point of caution. DO get one with a door, and only put Gizmo in and take Gizmo out through the door. If he never goes "over the top" he may not see that as a means of escape. It's worked for Bernie, my gate climber. He's never climbed out of an expen OR over our new wooden gate that hubby built for the foyer, and he's always gone in/out through the "door" of both of these. Good luck! Gizmo should love his new "play yard"! |

Thanks for the warning. That's something to think about. |
That looks like a really nice pen. |

And I would like to be able to host a Waco yorkie meetup eventually, so that's another reason to get an xpen we can add onto. :) Would the extra large one be too big? Which size is best? |

Dog club is a lot of fun...we started up as soon as we got the fence completed in our back yard. |
We have one that looks just about like that from Petco. While I've been training Georgia, it's been great, because I can just stretch it out across the living room, and it's like a huge baby gate. They are kind of a hassle to move, though. They're heavier than you think! Anyways, I'd love to have 2 of them to hook together for the back yard. That's a good idea for Christmas! I do think that you would need 2 of them (esp. if you have more than one dog). Although they're big, the area of one may not be big enough for some good rough and tumble play! |
We are trying to buy the lot of land beside us, so we are putting off the wooden fence around the backyard until we know how that goes. I would hate to put up a fence only to have to take part of it down in a few months. I know that a fence around the entire back yard would be really ideal. So, if we have this for now, I can use your suggestion of using it as a second fence during small dog gatherings when we are able to get a permanent fence for the yard. :D Thanks for the size info. :) |

Ex-pens.;) Good luck. I hope you get everything you want for Christmas. P.S. It would be great to have your expen along for the yorkietalk meetup, lol. |
Yep I would get two. I have two similar to that but made by precision. I love mine! I have even used them when we had outings at State Parks. They are heavy but not unmanagable |
This is great for outside and can have as many additional panels added as you want. You can get it at toys r us or babies r us: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index...ductId=2266978 It is tall enough and sturdy enough to use outside and it won't rust and washes easliy with a hose if needed. I have several of these and highly recommend it! |
i think mine is 3 feet tall and if you don't have a climber i don't recommend getting one this tall, unless you yourself are tall and can reach over it without getting the top of the gate smashed into your stomach. LOL i don't know what i was thinking when i bought this thing but i would like a shorter one. |

Our gold one that's around the pond has been up for over a year, almost two...we can still fold it up and take it with us. Just have to hose or brush the grass/dirt off. There aren't hinges per se, just connectors. So far, so good. Deb, I was just looking back through and saw what you said on these. I'm not doubting you by any stretch. Just wondering if you've had any reason to leave yours outside for an extended period of time??? They are nice, and I did like how sturdy mine was:) |

I have never had a reason to leave mine outside for any stretch of time, but there have been a few camping trips where they got abit dirty and washed off easily. |
That's definitely something to consider. It would be left outside more often than not. We don't have extreme temps in Waco, but we do get a lot of rain at times. Shipping costs are something else to consider though. These are shipped to our local Walmart for free I believe. I think there is a considerable cost for the Target ones, but I have to go check. Our local Target might carry it since we have one of those Target Greatlands here. |
Whatever you decide, please post pics of your little guy in his new playyard! Deb, thanks. Seems I've been ruffling feathers around here a bit lately without intending too...guess I'm a little gun shy;) |

Well, you've certainly gotten a lot of input on this thread. :) :) I love that about YT too. I belong to another forum and it drives me nuts. I'll respond to a thread or start a new one, and sometimes days go by until there is any response. LOL, kind of kills the whole point of bringing something up. That NEVER happens around here. Sometimes I post just in time to see that what I said is already two or three posts back in the thread. Gotta love YT. |
This is the one we have and our son has, the price is a lot better than what I had to pay for mine... http://www.petproductdepot.com/Gold-...FQSNHgodKGHdow 540-24 you can make it all different sizes, round or rectangular. |
Can you expand that by putting two together? I didn't see an expansion kit listed as an accessory, so I wondered. That's a good price! thanks for the info. I just need to check the shipping costs and whether it can be expanded. :) |

It\'s really nice..You get these little lock things with them, so, I would think you could put 2 together by clasping them..but, actually it opens up pretty big when you circle it.. |
