Well without pictures I'm not certain, but sounds like my Lucky. When we first got him he was about 4 months old, black coat but roots were gray! Here is a picture of him then and now.......

Sadie never changed...except for her face,legs and underside, they changed to gold. Her back stayed black. Lillie had very silvery/white roots on her head and back when she was 8 weeks old. She is now 18 months and is still changing. Her head/face is changing to a beautiful light tan and her back is kind of silvery with black. Yorkies can change color for (I think) up to 3 yrs.

i think you're going to have a very light colored yorkie

Yes they can change color as they get older. Piper is all gray and tan.
