One of the top breeders in the US is in PA. I believe they had some wins at Westminster. I would email them and ask if they have any pups or know of anybody (reputable) with puppies. Word of warning, if you have young children it's unlikely that they will sell to you. http://www.chrismanmaltese.com/ Here are some other top breeders in the US. It can be difficult getting a female pup and they often have no pups available at all. Some may be willing to ship. Marcris is in Florida~ http://www.marcrismaltese.com/ Divine Maltese is in Louisiana ( Larry won best of breed at Crufts 2005)~ http://www.divinemaltese.com/ Veranda Maltese is in Texas and has a male for 2000. http://www.verandamaltese.com/v_puppies.html Riverwalk is in Texas and breeds yorkies and malts. Bill is very nice and can help with info. http://www.riverwalkkennels.com/rw_puppies.html Pashes Maltese is in Texas and is where I got Bentley http://www.pashesmaltese.com/ Rhapsody is also in Texas http://www.rhapsodymaltese.com/ I can give you more breeder info but these are the ones I have "knowledge" off. All of the above are top line breeders. You may have to get on a waiting list and they may be very picky about future owners. Good luck |
Maltese are not popular in my area. It took us a long time to find ours. We looked at a few that I thought were cute, but just didn't have the right hair texture or good enough black points. IMO those are important qualities. Our last little guy took us 8 months to find and we drove 10 hours to Oregon to get him. You may have to hunt for a while to find good quality at an affordable price. An excellent quality maltese runs about $3000 in my area. We just couldn't afford that. Funny that we found our male in oregon for $800 and he has excellent hair texture and the blackest points I've ever seen. We just had to go looking outside of California to find a quality malt in our price range. I think it is also important to always check out the parents, mostly just to see their personality. IMO you want to make sure the parents are not extremely shy or aggressive and that the puppies have been started on socialization at an early age. The hair should be very straight. |
I think Jodi brings up a good point about the black points. They are an absolute MUST in my opinion as well. A Malt without black points always looks sick to me. |
They do look odd without the points. Almost makes me think albino. I have also seen uncomplete halos and thats not good either. |

Black Points are described as the black pigmentation such as eyerims, lips and nose. Eyes should be dark brown with black eye rims. Halos of pigmentation around the eyes gives a more beautiful expression. Eyeliner is a good choice. :-) |
One thing I have realized about the black pigmentation is that I prefer it on the skin all over their face. Chloe does not have it on the bridge of her nose, she's very pink and it looks funny to me. My mom's male has such good pigment that he has shading on all of his facial skin even on a lot of his body including his spine so that you see it all the way down his back part. The contrast that it gives is truly beautiful. |
I have 1 maltese and 1 Yorkie and all I can say is it's wonderful. I LOVE both of my dogs to death. They are total opposites - my Maltese is my "mate" for life, he loves me more than anything and is loyal and faithful to me. He wants nothing more than for me to hold him and kiss him - and he kisses me right back. He's my constant companion. My Yorkie is rough and daring (shocking for a 2.6 lb dog!) but she is needy in a different way. She needs me to nurture her, then she goes off running and playing. They're both such lovely breeds (my 2 favorites). |
That is exactly my experience. What one isn't the other is. They are a wonderful pair to have. |
We had Gracie, our Yorkie first then got Sampson our Maltese in January of this year. He is the dearest most well adjusted dog. While Gracie is anxious, hyper and follows me all around, EVERYWHERE and cannot seem to be by herself at any point in time, Sampson is content to sleep, play, wander and basically take care of himself. He is much more lovey dovey than Gracie - he does not mind being held and cuddled. He has LOTS of energy and is a very good playmate for Gracie. We keep saying that it is a good thing that we got Gracie, the princess, before Sampson because Gracie is such high maintenance (we love it) and Sampson is very low maintenance. He has the dearest personality - we should have named him Scamp or Rascal - he is one fiesty pup but absolutely adorable! He looks like a pure white Gracie. We are crazy about both of them. |
Hey guys, I just need to bump this up again...can anyone address my question about bad breath in a maltese? My mom's maltese has gorilla breath. Her vet told her it was a problem with the breed. Anyone else have this problem? |

That's good to know cause I am considering getting one except for that reason. This maltese is the sweetest little guy anyone would ever meet and he smiles!! I just love him. Mom has had him at the vet multiple times for the breath issue. The vet said it actually is caused by stomach problems and prescribes antibiotics??? Who knows. When he's on the antibiotics he doesn't have bad breath but Mom doesn't want to have him on meds all the time. |
Bentley is currently having a problem with bad breath. Small breed dogs are notorious for having dental problems and of course that causes bad breath, its due to tartar build up and or gum disease. Bentley just went in for his routine and the vet led me to believe that it had something to do with bone mass and of course maltese are very small and delicate boned dogs. He also said a lot of times maltese end up loosing teeth or needing them pulled because of the problem. Maltese have the highest rate of tooth and gum disease out of all dog breeds. Bentley is scheduled to go in for a cleaning in October. http://www.2ndchance.info/badbreath.htm |
