Another yorkie or a maltese I want to get another but I'm not sure if I should get another yorkie ( I know we are all yorkie lovers here) or a maltese? I was wondering what the diffrences in personalities might be? |
From my personal experience with both breeds - Maltese have less energy. I really want to get a Malt next. I know for sure that I'm not going to get another Yorkie. Variety is the spice of life, right? :p |
my aunt use to have maltese and all 3 of hers were very sweet! |
My mom had a 3# Maltese, and I think she had the same vitality and personality that my Yorkie has. The good thing is they don't shed either. I hate shedding dogs! She was really a sweety! Pat |
Try to get a maltese like that you have one of each! |
I have one of each. When I first started searching for a pup I was torn between the 2 breeds as I had wanted one or the other for years. I did lots of research and finally decided on a malt because they are suppose to be very sweet natured, gentle, friendly and playful but not hyper. Everyone kept telling me how yorkies were hyper, yappy & hard to housebreak and they kept say the "they are Terriers" like it was something horrible. My sister-in-law also talked me out of a yorkie because she had one years ago that was in her words "the dog from hell". Her yorkie was hyper, aggressive, destructive, etc ( I never met her dog so I don't know what that was all about). So all that info spooked me about getting a yorkie. Bentley (maltese) will be 4 years old in Oct. And he is a beautiful dog but he is not the typical sweet natured gentle dog that I was expecting. He is very much a one-person dog and has little to do with anyone but me and is very yappy. He's very devoted to me and follows me around like a shadow, he's a Mamma's boy and a lap dog. He is not playful but was easy to housebreak. Did suffer from major separation anxiety when I would leave the house. Maltese hair care is very labor intensive, tearstains are very common and their hair is nothing like a yorkie's. You can not neglect brushing and grooming or you will have major mats! It wasn't long after I got him that I still yearned for a cute little yorkie. I decide to get one to help with Bentley's anxiety about being home alone while I worked and because wanted a cute little yorkie. I brought Mia home on Bentley's second birthday. She is much sweeter natured than him, more playful but not hyper, she is not yappy. She's probably more of a lap dog than him and likes to be held more and she loves being babied, rocked, snuggled with etc. Her hair care is so much easier. She was more of a challenge to housebreak and still isn't perfect in that area. Yorkie grooming is a breeze. I believe that each dog has it's own personality be it yorkie or maltese and the "breed" itself may not impact what it's temperament or personality will be. Grooming alone is the reason I caution people about maltese and the reason I will not get another. It takes work to keep them pretty , mat free and white. There are a few maltese forums where you can gain more info. Let me know if you need links. Good luck |

A maltese was my second pic when I was searching for a pet! They are gorgeous but my heart still wanted a yorkie more. I totally agree that every dog has its own personality. You never know what you will get until it's been living with you. My boy Cookie is not energetic, not hyper, not yappy, barely ever barks until he hears the doorbell! lol My girl is yappy, extremely energetic, and demands to be center of attention at all times. They are both Yorkies and totally different. If I had the money I would get a third male yorkie.I just love them. Do some more research and just like mentioned before, check out some of the maltese forums . Genie www.littlemimi.org |
3 Attachment(s) I love maltese! I have Chloe, and my mother has a male and female maltese as well. They just fit our personality so well. Not to say we don't have the best time with our yorkie, but I could probably not handle two. Maltese are calmer, they can be very playful and silly, not terrier feisty, easier to potty train. Extremely loyal to their owner. They can learn tricks, although not as easy as a yorkie and mine don't really care to do them to much. They do pick a favorite person, I like that actually. Hair care is definately a daily thing, but I enjoy that time as well. Tearstaining can be kept under control, some get it really bad and others not at all. Between me and my mom's dogs, we tried different brands of food and all three of them have perfectly white faces now. Some maltese have more silky hair compared to cottony. My mom's female does not mat at all, her male hardly mats. Chloe mats pretty bad and she has wavy hair. I've been keeping my mom's female for an extended period of time, she is the most loving devoted little thing, she just lives to be cuddled. Chloe is very silly and playful. And well, Tucker, he is a rotton little puppy. But hopefully will grow out of that. He is our first male dog, so I don't know if their personality is different or not, he does not like to cuddle too much, seems more independent. Our two girls are not yappy at all. Here's a picture of my Chloe, my mom's Lexi and my mom's male Tucker (doesn't he just look mischievous!) |
My mom has a Maltese...Lily. She is a handful! Very sweet natures and loves to play fetch. But if you scold her, she will pout in her bed for hours. She is something else! A ball of white fluff! |
Maltese or Yorkie I had 2 Maltese before getting Copper. My experience was...I loved them. The first was a male, Spook, and he was definately "my dog" They seem to pick one person as has been said before. His hair was more silky and fairly easy to groom. He lived to be 15 years. The next maltese was a female, Misty, took to my husband...followed him everywhere. I think a lot of their personality has to do with what you do with them. Neither of my maltese liked to travel. Probably because I did not socialize them as I should have. We didn't get Misty until she was 6 months old, and I think that was a part of her shyness. She lived to be 16 years. But they are very sweet dogs...calmer...at least mine were. The personality is totally different. Grooming is a chore with them, I had both puppy cut. Spook remained long until I had kids, but then It became too much for me to raise children, work and groom. Now my kids are grown and I have a little more time. Copper is quite a challenge to keep still long enough to groom, but is much easier to comb than both the maltese. Hope this helps. They are both sweet breeds. |
i had this debate too.. before i got my third pup! .. (A maltese).. They are so sweet.. although it does take a lot of work to keep them mat free or white or whatever.. (although i don't do it as much as i'd like).. i do the same grooming as my yorkies. Only because Cloey isn't going to be a show dog or anything.. and she's still as cute as ever.. Cloey has a LOT of energy when she wants.. but she's very calm.. unlike Ginger.. Ginger does not like people to touch her lol.. (my friends call her a Diva lol).. Cloey is very friendly and likes everyone.. whatever you decide best wishes!! i know you can't go wrong with either breeds! |
I am partial to yorkies. I have two and even though they are the same breed they are completely different in personality. One would not know what to do without the other one. |
I have a Maltese and my experience w/ the personalities of the two breeds is very similar to LuvMyPupster. My Malt, Tuffy, is very high strung, yappy and hyper as can be. Don't get me wrong, I love him to pieces, but he's a handful. He doesn't have the typical Maltese personality that I hear most people talk about. My Yorkie, Pixie, is so calm, sweet and loves nothing more than to cuddle up on my lap. Pixie has had a really good influence on Tuffy and has actually calmed him down a bit and they get along great. The hair care on my Maltese is a pain in the butt.. tear staining is an issue that a lot of Maltese have and it's hard to get rid of and white hair is a chore in and of itself. My Maltese has a very cottony coat so he mats easily so I have to keep him in a short hair cut unless I want to spend hours brushing him out everyday. You are more likely to spend more money on a Maltese than on a Yorkie, especially if you want to buy from a good breeder as they tend to cost more than Yorkies. I can't recommend enough to find a reputable breeder when it comes to Maltese... it will really make a difference in what kind of adult dog you end up with. I didn't do my homework and ended up buying from a newspaper ad and my Maltese is larger than standard and has a cottony coat. But my biggest piece of advice is to search for a breeder who is breeding the qualities and personality you want in a dog. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions and check out some Maltese forums to get some more information and feedback. Good luck on whatever you decide! :D |
i would say yorkie i dont like maltese cause of there white hair i think it would be too much work unless you want that i actually said i would never get another yorkie but how can i not im looking for one now lol good luck with whatever you choose |
The two breeds are very similar to one another and many times Yorkie or Maltese admirers tend to find both breeds appealing. Some of the same type health problems are prone to both breeds such as luxating patella, liver shunt, hypoglycemia, collapsed trachea, dental problem. White Shaker Dog Syndrome is something that is seen in small white dogs. Both breeds are described as non shedding. Both breeds are described as being good for people with allergies due to low dander and shedding very little. Maltese do not have a doggy odor. The maltese standard states that they are fine boned, weight is under 7 pounds with 4-6 lbs being desirable. They are single coated with silky hair that is pure white in color ( tan or lemon on the ears is permissible but not desirable). The terms black points and or halo describes the black eye rims and black nose. Tails are a long haired plume that is carried over the back. Head and ears resemble a spaniel. The maltese temperament reads as follows according to AKC. (sounds pretty much like a yorkie to me) For all his diminutive size, the Maltese seems to be without fear. His trust and affectionate responsiveness are very appealing. He is among the gentlest mannered of all little dogs, yet he is lively and playful as well as vigorous. I truly love my maltese but he is not typical of the maltese temperament. I have never had a more devoted dog. He so painfully attached to me and has so little to do with anyone else. I just wish others in my family could enjoy his attention and affection as much as I do. Mia (yorkie) is very much a mamma’s girl as well but she also likes other people. I always say that if something were to happen to me poor Bentley would be devastated and probably pine away. While Mia would bond and adjust to someone else. |

I just wanted to add, IMO, since maltese are more prone to really attach themselves to one person, it is very much more important to work on socializing a maltese. My yorkie loves EVERYONE and I don't think I've had to work on socializing her, she just likes people by nature. She's so excited when we have a visitor she dribbles pee accidentally everywhere. I used to have a maltese that was NOT socialized very well and she hated strangers! But I have learned my lesson, Chloe is very socialized, but she does take a minute to warm up to people, I guess you would call her cautious but she does like people and attention, especially children. Unlike Tinkerbell who will jump right into a strangers lap and lick, lick, lick. |
Hi! I've also thought about getting a Maltese. Right now I have a Norwegian Elkhound cross, a Yorkie, and a toy poodle. A maltese is next on my list!! :) |

See my experience is much different. My little Haley is much like how Brenda (luvmypup) describes Bentley, her maltese as, And Maya my maltese is much like her Mia, her yorkie. The way that my Maya is, she is very typical of the maltese personality. She is VERY affectionate, very sweet tempered, loyal, and playful. She likes other people, although haley has taught her the bad habit of barking when someone comes in our house. I would get another maltese in a heartbeat (well actually we wouldnt because Maya is one of a kind ;)) I have 3, and what I have noticed is that every breed will have similarities and differences no matter what, but when it comes down to it, it is the specific dog that will have the differences. A lot of our yorkies have similar traits that are cute yorkie only things, but some of ours are shy, playful, calm, and I think we have determined that many yorkie coats are different. Rocky is the most playful yorkie around. He swims, runs, is CONSTANTLY playing with his ball etc. but nobody would have told us that that is what we were getting when we got a yorkie, so I think it just really depends. However, I totally agree that a maltese's coat is a piece of work! That is the only reason I would discourage anyone who doesnt have the time to groom. I didnt brush Maya for 2 days, she even had a short coat, I had to immediately take her to the groomer and get her cut so they could take the mats out. The coat is something that isnt even describable. Also, mats that maltese's get can be dangerous because they form into the skin. My groomer told me never to try and cut them out myself bc I could cut her skin. Well, I will never let her get mats again! I would do a lot of research about the breed. I think they are a great match with yorkies, Maya and Rocky play all day long. Haley is my little sleeper so she could care less lol! Maltese's (and yorkies) are a wonderful breed! |
HI Brooke! I was just wondering if you use a slicker brush on mats. I never have a problem getting a mat out with one of those. Also I think it's strange that your groomer would tell you not to cut a mat out. If you have a very bad mat you cut into the mat vertically and then use the slicker brush to comb it out layer by layer. Works very well. |

My mother-in-laws maltese is a complete spaz! Its kinda ditzy. BUt it really sweet and nice. :) |
I have a slicker brush :D Which one do you use? I have the pin brush and slicker from #1 all systems. I had cut the mats out and when I brought her in they said I shouldnt do that bc I could cut her. Oh well, wont happen again!! Do you keep Chloe in a long coat? |
I use the one that looks like pins and they are bent at an angle at the end. I don't know what brand it is. I buy cheap because one of the dogs always gets ahold of the brush and chews it up so I feel like I have to buy them often. My mom and I both keep our dogs in long coat. But my mom's dogs, especially her female, doesn't mat ever. She's been staying with me for a while and I've only been brushing her once every week right before her bath and she hasn't had not one mat. Chloe is the only one that can get bad mats. I usually brush her every other day and she does ok. |
Whatever you decide both breeds are adorable and a joy. They have so many similarities that they tend to appeal to people wanting a long haired toy breed. IMHO the mats are not nearly as easy to get out as with a yorkies hair and often just have to be cut out. Grooming a maltese is much more of a commitment and lots of people do not want to do such labor intensive grooming. They all have their own little personality and quirks just as we humans do. I'm glad I have one of each but in the future should I get another dog a maltese would not be my choice. I knew ahead of time about the grooming so I knew what I was getting into. Just wouldn't do it again. Brooke, your Maya has always sounded like such a little sweetheart, I think she is very typical of the breeds personality. |
My mom has a maltese that I adore!!! She grooms him herself and keeps him looking really pretty. I don't think she has a big problem with tear stains and when she finds a mat she just cuts it out. The biggest problem she's had with him is his breath!! We call it gorilla breath. Even after a teeth cleaning, within a few days it's bad again unless he stays on antibiotics. Something about his stomach. Has anyone else heard of this?? He is a really picky eater. Any advice would be great. The vet was not a lot of help other than the antibiotics. But Mom doesn't want to keep him on those all the time. Breath fresheners don't help and he eats raw carrots every day. |
WOW you guys are so full of great information! I guess I have concluded that they are alot like our kids in that we never know what their personalities are going to be. I have 3 kids who are grown and all 3 who believe it or not have the same parents are completely different! I am actually concerned about getting a 3rd puppy but they bring so much joy to my life that I think another would be great but I'm always reminded that it was so much easier to pick up Lexi and run out the door with her in 1 hand and now I have 2 so how much harder will it really be or would I end up leaving them home more? I don't know what to do but I really do love my yorkies and swore I'd never get anything else but those malteses are just as cute especially now that I know they are very similar. I have a great groomer so that won't be a problem and my Lexi has the worst hair for matting so I'm ready, I think! Thank you so much for alll your advice! You girls are great! Anyone know of a good breeder in PA? |
