Did they rule out liver shunt? Head pressing, disorientation, circling are some of the symptoms.
Sending prayers for Schnoodles.

Just want to send you my prayers while you and Snoodles wait for an answer and deal with this condition from day to day. I would be beside myself if anything like this happened to Tia...you are strong! Hope you find some answers and a treatment.

That sounds like a stroke to me. Did your vet evaluate your baby for a stroke?

Thanks everyone for being so concerned! It is heart breaking to watch this. I took her to the first vet and she said she had cerebrial vestubilar desease. I took her to the second vet who I have had for 30 yrs (he wasn't in when this first happened) He did take all kinds of blood tests--to the tune of $220.00. Everything there was fine. Liver, etc. Then he put her on prednizone which made her way worse. He didn't understand that, but she was banging her head and couldn't sleep for it. I was uop with her for two weeks straight just holding her body and rocking her. The aspirin has helped her the most, but I sure hate to keep her on it the rest of her life. The Dr. had me wean her off to one twice a week, but the symptoms returned so he put her back on 1/4 baby aspirin every day. Her legs are weak, she sleeps a lot, is really disoriented when she wakes up. Circles and when she gets excited she spins until she falls down. She will stare at things forever. Just stand there and look at it. Her legs in the back will cross one over the other, or one straight out behind her. I have to take her up and down the stairs to go potty, etc. He did mention a neurolgist 240 miles away, but doesn't think she would survive the anesthesia to under go the MRI! Also said there is a big possibility that it wouldn't show anything anyway. So, I am beside myself. Some times she will run to the fence--back legs like a rabbit.
Thank you hHa for contacting that Dr. for me! I truly appreciate it. The next time I talk to the Dr. I will mention liver shunt. Although I think he mentioned liver, and the blood work came back good. The only thing was something in the (I believe it was the Bun--urine) but said it was because she was so disoriented she wasn't drinking. She is no longer slamming her head, but is definently not good. He seems to just think to go with the aspirin and see how it progresses. I am beside myself. She certainly is not the same dog. kShe is not drinking enough either. Sometimes she goes to her bowl and stands there looking at it as if she doesn't know what it is. I am been giving her watermelon and other melons to get some fluid.
Thank you everyone! I will keep you informed as to this horrible thing that has happened to her!

When something very similar was happening to my previous yorkie, Brutus, it was White Shaker Dog Syndrome. If you google it, you can read the symptoms. It happens in small white dogs AND yorkies. My vet at the time was not familiar with it. It happened throughout his life. He lived to be 12. Read up on it and see if it rings true to the symptoms your sweetie is having.

It sounds like seizures to me, does it come and go? Blood test do not diagnose a stroke (CVA), a low calcium level or electrolyes can make a human act strang e, so I would think also a little dog.

Has she been scratching at her ears? Does she whimper if she gets bumped into? Does she have trouble looking down? Maybe that's why she is not drinking her water, you said that she will go to her bowl and just stand there, you might need to elevate it for her, her food as well. You might try this so that she doesn't become dehydrated.

The reason I am asking these questions is because my Baby Kosmo was having similar symptoms and was diagnosed with Yorkshire Terrier Encephalitis. This is a very horrible disease, with no cure in sight. Some babies can live with it for a few years, it took my baby in 5 days, he was only 18 months old. It is not hereditary, it just happens to some. I hate to discredit your vet but an MRI will definitely show if this is the problem. I don't want to scare you and hopefully this is not the diagnosis but it should be checked.

I am sending prayers to you and your little baby.

It sounds alot like Pug Dog Encephalitus. I went through that with a pug that I was going to show. she was never sick a day in her life until almost exactly 2 years old. She went down-hill very fast. I ended up having to put her down as there is no cure. I was not aware that Yorkies can have it also until I read the previous post. In Pugs, it usually runs in families, but not always. Hope your little one gets better.

Has your dog recently had any shots?
Did your vet do any neurological tests on her? They can do simple balance tests to se if there is neurological damage however it does seem that if her legs are crossing there might be.
Talk to the neurologist about your concerns on the anesthesia, see if there is something they suggest in the meantime until she is stronger. I would worry about the encephalitis that affects yorkies. I mention this only because it is pretty rare for a young dog to get vestibular disease without an ear infection.

I had a similar experience tho not as severe with my yorkie, she ended up having an ear infection that was not treated with the proper antibiotics. She was (like you said) a very sick girl, slept all the time for weeks. I worried about encephalitis but the vets never seemed to think she had it. She is fine now although she circles here and there still. They say it is because of damage to her vestibular bone.
I never felt as if I got a definitive answer and it haunts me but whatever it was she has been ok for months and recently broke her leg and did get through her surgery just fine. I feel for you, it was the absolute scariest thing I have ever gone through with a dog and I pray that your little girl gets better soon.

There is a yahoo group called GME dogs that has so much good information, if I were you I would join and ask them what they think and/or suggest. Not because she has it but because they have had tons of experience with the disease and you can never have too much information.

Thank you, thank you, everyone! He put her on antibiotics in case it was an ear infection even though her ears looked okay.
Her eyes just look strange when she wakes up, like she doesn't know where she is. He knows it was some kind of brain injury or desease. When she tries to eat, she can't take from your hands--tilts her head and can't get it. When she eats from her bowl, she has a hard time getting it in her mouth, but does manage to eat --even though it is sloppy. One side of her mouth and tongue doesn't work right.
She doesn't have seizures. He asked me that. She does have impairment on balance. If he bends her foot back, --resting on the top paw--she doesn't move it. back legs will cross also at times. She can't pick up her toys and play at all. The only thing she sometimes picks up is a empty roll of toilet paper. The spinning at times is what drives me crazy. She circles around and around a lot!
I am going to the White Shaker Syndrome and check that out, also the Encephalitis site and then the GME Forum!
you guys have been so helpful. I can't thank you enough!

Did it come and go, or was she like this most of the time? Did they put her on any medicine? It's terrible that one has to try to diagnose one's own dog! I just feel so bad for her and she is so young. I just saw another Yorkie running and jumping etc. and it broke my heart that she has lost that.

Thanks for the link am going there now!
