My town limit is 3. I have 4. I did not mean to break the law, but I didn't *know* the law until after I got McKenzie and my neighbors grand daughter informed me that 3 is the limit.

I called the clerk and was told to register her to a family member in town (which I did). She actually told me also that if I was to go in and register 10 animals, it wouldn't even put a flag in the system, that the law is in place as protection to other people in the town.

We changed all our vet records to my dad's name for Kenzie, so technically Mckenzie is their dog.

I was really REALLY worried about this and spent many sleepless nights. I can honestly say I don't think I would have gotten Mckenzie had I known the rule. We live on a street where head of council is our neighbor, the person next door's ex hubby is a cop, and the lady at the end of the street works for the clerks office -- so I was basically petrified.

But, w/the exception of one of those people who makes snide remarks to my little sister about my dogs at school (she works there) and this is of course according to my little sister so I can't 100% verify truth. The woman has not said anything to me about it...no one has had a problem and I'm lucky that nearly everyone on my street and in my neighborhood has a dog and they all really enjoy my dogs as well.

If it ever became a problem, I would find someone to care for one until I could move, then we would be outside city limits in a heartbeat... the fur kids come first.

The mayor of our town was walking around the other day greeting people and he took the time to stop and play with our furkids and I was impressed that he did that and said he was a dog lover.

If it did come down to a dispute over my animals best believe I would have my story all over the newspaper and anywhere else I could. Animal limit laws *have* been challenged and the people *have* won in certain cases.

It's unfortunate that animal limit laws don't see that having limits on animals doesn't solve the problems w/the overpopulation of pets or other issues such as cleanliness of the city and dog attacks. I think they should really try to have free clinics on how to responsibly care for your dogs, free training classes or low cost options so that dogs with behavior issues get help that they need and owners can become more aware of how to handle these issues.

My mom lives next to someone who chains her dog to the inside porch all day long and they block out the windows so she can't see. She howls all day long waiting to be played with :(. Now you tell me, who is the one that is truly commiting a crime? Me, who loves my dogs as children and unknowingly broke a law, or Her who is denying a poor animal a chance at life and love? I'm working on getting her dog out of that situation by convincing her to release her to me so that I can find her a rescue group.. it's a big mess :(.

In Illinois, it really depends on the town you live in. Our village limit is 4 pets total. 9 miles south of us, you can have all the cats you want but there is a 3 dog limit. We didn't even think there were rules such as this when you own a home, and so we moved in with 8 cats and then added on the 2 dogs. (shhh!) But we are actually trying to rehome some of the cats, since one cat was diagnosed with renal failure, she seems to get picked on a bit more now.

Of course, the Yorkies will never go anywhere as long as I have a say so in it. I wondered what they would do if they found out, but I don't think they would sieze the animals, I suspect they'd write up a warning first and give you a time period to rehome some of the animals.

It's really something I think that gets pulled out when neighbors complain, because it's really absurd. There are no rules as to how many kids you can have, and those are demanding on everyone's tax dollars for an education. Whose business is it how many pets I have, as long as they are cared for? And they are!

There is no limit here in Nevada, but when I lived in central California, the limit was three pets. Not three dogs and three cats, but three total pets. If you had litter they didn't count until they were over four months, I believe. Now, the laws may have changed in the past five years since I was there. I doubt for the better. They were trying to pass a law there recently to make you have all your pets spayed or nuetered by some incredibly young age. If you wanted to breed you have to get all kinds of licenses, and that sort of thing.

It sure seems like we are losing alot of freedoms as far as our pets go. I know there are reasons, but for us true animal lovers that take care of our pets it is frustrating.

The city ordinance here is 3 dogs & 5 cats. We had bought the house and were moving here when I found that out. We had 4 dogs. I called the city office and asked about it and was told that we would have to get rid of one of the dogs (yeah, right!) After the move I went to Animal Control with my records from where we used to live and licensed all 4 of my dogs. She said "OH, you have 4?", "YES I DO", "ok, who's first?"

Here in Vancouver, BC, Canada, there is a by-law that says you have to license your dogs and you are only allowed 3 licenses per household!

sweetr72 11-19-2007 12:02 AM

Its neat to see how it varies around the world but especially in Canada!! What I want to know is what happens if you meet someone who has two dogs and you have two dogs and the law is two dogs per household...does that mean someone would have to just get rid of two dogs?? This law ticks me off to no end. Its just not fair...unfortunately there is no where close I could move if I got caught..so its not just like I could move out of the city limits and the law would change..hopefully no one ever knocks on my door!!

No limit where we are! Thankfully! I agree that the important thing is not how MANY we all have, it's how we CARE for them!!! :)

Here 2 dogs and 3 cats are allowed per family . They have to be spayed or neutered . If they are found roaming , the fine is very high .
In country , unfortunately there are no limits so some puppymills are growing too fast .

scoobiedooiscoo 11-19-2007 06:00 AM

in our town the limit is 4 dogs i have 5 but we licensed one in the town where my parents live , we share that dog anyway.

mistyinca 11-19-2007 06:01 AM

I believe the county laws state 4 licensed dogs. People who want to get around that just don't license all their dogs...

SladesMommy 11-19-2007 06:04 AM

Around here the law is 3 dogs inside the city limits, and if more than that you have to apply for a kennel license. But as long as the animals are well taken care for the law is rarely (If ever) enforced. AC has too many other things to worry about

We live outside the city limits, and I dont' know if there is a rule on # of pets (we have 4 dogs). If they passed one and were enforcing it, I woudl probably go ahead and get an apt (like I'm planning on doing soon anyway) and take my two dogs and move, which would only leave 2 dogs at my house.

SladesMommy 11-19-2007 06:06 AM

oh yea, and you don't have to license your dog around here either. My county is still way behind times when it comes to animals.

I thought

I thought most towns ...not the country though... had laws limiting the number of animals... but I just didn't think very many were enforced until someone gets them enforced on you.

hha 11-20-2007 04:47 AM

You know, I always thought you could have as many as you want...never really thought about it...Don't know who you would call to find out, but, I'm sure if you go back, you will see there are a lot of laws in certain states that are never carried through..Just like one of them here is that you can't beat your wife up at home, but, you can beat her up if you take her to the steps of the court house..now, tell me, these laws aren't way outdated..?

Well you would have to call your town hall or your equivilent where you live. Unfortunately this law isnt outdated here..its truely enforced as I had given the example that animal control is going door to door in neighbouring cities...Im in a small town and so far I havent heard of this happening around here yet but in a city 40 mins from here it is happening and ignorance of the law isnt an excuse..its actually your job to know the law....like you cant go through a red light and say you didnt know that was the law...its your job to learn the laws not anyones job to teach you the law...so it wouldnt really go to far to say if they do show up..that I just didnt know as that is my responsibility to know. Im sure back in the day when it was ok to beat your wife at home and not in public (or when that law was written) there werent any dog laws lol..
