What is the law where you live?? Here in my little part of Ontario Canada the law states we can only own two dogs..(I have three shhhhhh) :p and there is no law about cats (so far) . I know some people on here have more than 2 yorkies..is there a law where you live?? If so tell me about it and how it works for you? If you are "breaking" the law like I am tell me what you would do if you were caught?? My friend in a neighbouring town had animal control going door to door to check!! The warned if there was more than two dogs they were taking them ALL away from people. Luckily she only had two dogs but I dont know what I would do if they came to my door!! Dawn |
Here, as long as you own your own house, there is no laws as to how many dogs you can have. |

No laws here regarding the number of dogs in a household. All dogs are supposed to be vaccinated against rabies - honor system - and we have a leash law that is NOT enfoced. Sometimes I think more regulation would be a good thing. |
In Philadelphia it is 12! 80% or more must be fixed. Kind of interesting number for the city. |
I wonder why we are so strict here in Canada?? I certainly want more yorkies in time but the fear overrides my wants most of the time..:( |

There are no laws here limiting your number of pets (unless of course you rent a home where you can't have pets....=/). But ALL of your animals must be registered with the town. and of course, they have to be well taken care of, or someone is going to tell on you (lots of people around here love and have dogs.) My old town had a leash law...I don't know if this new one does. It wasn't enforced very well...but it was there. and once a year at town hall they had a place to get rabies shots for them. |
We do however have very strict laws against animal cruelty, which is great. We don't have a law to give rabies jabs because rabies doesn't exist here. No leash laws but a law that you must have control over your dogs at all times, a very reliable recall is respected within that. |
Interesting..I dont even know the law in where I live!:p when i got chloe spayed, i read a sign on the wall that says it is the city law all pets have to be spayed or neutured! How do i find out the law around where I live? |
I live in Nashville Georgia in the city limits they say we are only allowed 2 dogs per household. I only have 2 but my neighbor has 3 and was actually taken to court by the old man that used to own our house. They threw it out. After Christmas we will be looking for a little girl and will then have 3. They don't do anything crazy like go door to door checking so I don't think there would be a problem unless we had a grumpy/nosey old man heighbor to report you. If there ever was a problem I would sell this house in a heartbeat and move outside the city limits! |

here you can have as many dogs as you want, and if you call the animal control, they will enforce the leash law.. |

On the military base two pets, out in town no more that four but I have seen more. |
No laws in Michigan.....there should be tho...Inner City Detroit is known for puppy mills breeding Pitbulls, rotties, and other so called "fighting" dogs. Its sickening.....The only laws i know of say you have to have your dogs registered with the state. |
I hoestly don't know but i don't think there is a law here, guess it just depends on your building, or if you own a house it's up to you. |
I found this site for Toronto, Canada. You can have 3 dogs or 6 cats. http://www.doglegislationcouncilcana...endations.html |
Diggy4, you have to register with the state? I thought is was just the county for rabies. I don't know if we have a limit law here but it is not enforced if we do. I also think laws for that are absolutely ridiculous and stupid. If a person has one dog they could treat it horribly and someone could have 10 and treat them like royalty, so those laws make no sense. |
Here you can have as many as you want as long as they are taken care of.. I'll have 3 in February.. |

Gosh, I know there's a law here, but I'm not too concerned about it. As long as the animals are well cared for, no one is going to take them away and add to the large number of pets without homes. By the way, I'm sure my family is breaking the law, we have 5 dogs, 11 cats (+ 2 foster kittens) and foster dogs coming through all the time. Not to mention our creepy crawlies (snakes, lizards, turtles), birds, and rodents. |
none here that i know of |

What I think is nuts is that someone can own dogs and take terrible care of them...tie them to a tree for their whole life but I take care of my dogs..probably better than I take of myself lol..and have to abide by laws that dont really care about that dog tied to a tree its whole life...dumb dumb dumb lol.. Exactly why it would be ridiculous to take away babies from loving homes when there's already so many that aren't cared for, or homeless. |
wow - I had no idea that there were laws like that.....doesnt really make sense to me - as long as you can care for and love them |
I had no idea what our city regulations were...We moved here from the country and had no limit there obviously....I just looked up our city code- We are allowed to have up to 6 dogs &/or cats total. Any more than that, you have to get a permit. However, the permit looks easy to get from what I read???? I thought this was interesting.....Thanks for starting this thread... Joyce |
In the city I live in they limit the animals - Ordinance allows a total of six cats and dogs, not more than three of which may be dogs, per household. This just changed a couple years ago, because I think they used to say only 3 dogs and 3 cats. I'm not breaking any oridances - although I'd like to :D - I'd have a houseful if I had more time and money. The one thing that is really odd, but i'm not telling the city - I adopted my 2 yorkies when they were a 1 1/2 - about the same exact time of yr licenses have to be paid by. I adopted them from someone who lived in a suburb that does not require licenses so I was thrilled I got off without paying a license fee because the city didn't know I had them. But I figured the next year, they will get the vet report and know the yorkies are here & I'll get billed just like i do for the cats. Well, never once have I received anything from the city to pay for a license for the yorkies. I said something at my vet office the last time I was there, they didn't have an explanation and said they have sent my info in just like everyone else. So it's money saved ;) |
In my city, the law is no more than 4 dogs/cats/ferrets/potbellied pigs combined per household(LOL..potbellied pigs:confused: ) But the animal control laws are being rewritten right now so it may change soon (hopefully to allow more animals than 4). I don't think it's fair for a city/county to put a limit on a number of animals you can have as long as they are being cared for properly. It's like putting a limit on the number of kids people can have. How many animals a person has should be their own choice. I personally don't give a crap what the city says..I'll have as many pets as I want and luckily they aren't strict about enforcing their law. Right now I have two cats and a dog and my roommate has a cat (and I've been taking care of my parents yorkie for 6 weeks). But I know people that live in city limits and have way more than 4 pets combined LOL...they haven't had any problems with the city so far |
I think in the city limits the limit is 3 dogs. If you have more and breed one litter, you need to get a kennel license. I live in the county because I have horses and goats, so I think any amount is ok. But, we have sheriff Joe Arpiao, I know I just mispelled his name, Who loves dogs and has an animal cruelty unit that is very effective in busting puppy mills and anyone that is being cruel to other animals as well. They get a good 300 plus calls per month reguarding this. He is also great in busting illegal aliens, coyotes, and other human scum bags. |
