| Need advice on Dog Sitter... My groomer past away about two months ago. She had taken care of my dogs for years. Anytime I would go away I would leave the dogs with Barbara and have no anxiety. I have a trip planned in February to florida and need some advice from YT members that have flown with there dogs. Levi is a particularly nervous rider in the car...so I don't know what to do. How tough is the airplane ride on them? I am down to just the one dog now so It is a little easier than the two. I was thinking of running an ad in the local paper to try and find a new "sitter". Any suggestions? Advice? Thanks Rose p.s. any YT members living near Cape Cod, Mass? |

| I always look for pet sitters using the various associations..... http://www.petsit.com/ http://www.petsitters.org/ You find someone in your area and then can start learning about their services, get (and check!) references, and then meet a sitter and see if its the right person for you. I used this to find the pet sitter's I used while lived in CA when I had my lab mix. I've just now started looking for Elphaba...we actually have the first "meet and greet" this Friday. |

| Does he just get restless in the car, or car sick? My shih tzu gets really nervous in the car, but, if your pup is old enough, you can go to the vets and get a tranquilizer, I have them for my shih tzu mostly for storms..the only time she gets in the car is when she absolutely has too.. |

| Welcome Maybe ask around at your vet's office to see if they have any recommendations for sitters?

| I am in the same boat. Buddy hates to ride in the car so I cannot imagine what he would do on a plane. I really would like to find someone that I could trust to keep Buddy when we go to the Bahama's in the Spring.

| A couple of things to be aware of when flying with dogs (at least in my experience): The airline usually requires a health certificate, done within 2 weeks of the flight time. Your vet should have the form and just fill it out after a check up. The airlines usually discourage tranquilizing a dog for travel (but have no way of knowing if you have or not, I guess.) It is not supposed to be too good for the dog...I do not know exactly why. Make sure they fit under the seat. The airlines may be more flexible once you are in the air, but under the seat the dog goes for takeoff and landing. HOWEVER: My experience is with flying my big dog in the cargo hold...talk about nervous (Me, not him!) He did great, but there were other things I had to do for his flight that might not apply to a "carry on" pet. Funny story: After I weighed him in, and purchased his "ticket", the counter people could not resist him, and let him out of the carrier to load him up with treats (I was busy checking in, and did not see this). Well, he decided the luggage carousel looked interesting, and jumped up on it. I looked up to hear the counter people either screaming or laughing...I could not tell. And there he was...going past me on the carousel, smiling, wagging his tail, and having a great time. When I picked my jaw up off the floor, I ordered him down, and back into the crate he went! I will never forget that as long as I live. He was a star that day. Matthew |

I can't remember the name of the stuff (the tranquilizer) that I have, I got it like 2 years ago, and I have one left. It's a little redish color pill..if you go to the vets, tell them that you need some kind of tranquilzer, they can tell you..I know it was very cheap..but, this poor shih tzu of mine, shakes so bad when we take her in the car, she hates, storms, fireworks, etc..and if I don't have them to give to her, I'm afraid she would have a heart attack..she's going to be 10 in 3 more mos. | |

| Crystal has flown alot and you never heard a peep out of her. I was never allowed to open her carrier or to make people aware that a dog was on the plane since so many have allergies. Every dog is different but if you plan to be on the go alot , I for one think they are much happier if it's a week or so to be in their own home with a sitter who is certified by a 'sitter assoc' like someone mentioned here. Good Luck.
