Why must she be so friggin' stubborn! I am seriously at my wits end with Zoey! I don't know what to do! Zoey is almost 2 years old and still NOT pottytrained! She just refuses to do the right thing. She wants to do what she wants to do. I've tried everything and nothing is working for me. I've tried to crate train her. No results. I've tried taking her outside. No results. When she goes outside, she doesn't do anything but sit down. As soon as we step in the door, she goes straight to my carpet and squats! I am absolutely fed up! I have ever tried putting pee-pee pads all over the livingroom where I know she likes to "do her business" and she walks right over them and resorts to a fresh new spot on the carpet. Guys, what should I do? Is there any type of schedule that she should be on? I really want to cry. If I can't get her trained, I have no choice but to get rid of her. I can't continue to put up with this. :( |
You poor thing. I feel your exasperation. We had a chi who was never fully housetrained in six years of life. The good news is, you can start over and succeed. People do it all the time. Tell us more about what you've tried. How do you feed? Do you leave the food out? Do you feed once, twice a day? What's your family's reaction when she goes in the house? Do you scold? What's the reaction when she goes outside? Do you praise? Here's what I recommend: * Put her on a feeding schedule. Twice a day. * Thirty minutes after feeding, take her for a long walk. If she goes, praise, praise, praise and give her the best treats you have. (You don't have to do the walk all the time, but in the beginning you want to maximize your chances for success.) *If she goes in the house and you don't catch her, ignore it. * If she goes in the house and you catch her, give her a calm but firm "no" and carry her outside to an area you want her to go. * Be patient. Others will probably recommend that you go back to crate training. I don't have any experience with that but agree it's a good idea. |
I had good luck with Bill Jack bite size treats and PUppy Marrow bones (by milkbone, OR try a tiny bit of liverworsrt on your finger - they reallty like that |
Hi I too can feel your frustration....but let me assure you that one day she will seem to just go in the right place....really!! that true;) But in the meantime I must mention this and it may be something that you have thought of already. One thing these little peanuts do is lead by their noses....what I mean by that is if there is a hint of a smell of weewee or poop any where that she has gone in the past...you guessed it she WILL go there again. They don't understand that you cleaned it up and that they are NOT supposed to go there again...they just sniff and go. So first I must impress upon you that no matter what cleaners you are using (I use ammonia and of course the puppy cleaner stuff) if you are NOT using enough of the solution to clean doggie weewee and poop they WILL smell it and THINK that is the place to go. I have no knowledge of crate training although it is a VERY good way to train. One other thing is....what ever method you decide to use.....stick with it and you will succeed. Consistency and patience are key...and also good treats;) . Don't get discouraged and remember the doggies are the right ones it's us that need to understand. I hope I helped....if you would like you can PM me if you think I can answer any questions for you. I am sure others will say a few things that you can relate to and will help. Tina:D |
Do you have a yard you take her into? If so I know this is a pain, but stay out their as long as it takes her to go. If she won't the minute she comes in and runs for the carpet snatch her up, and put her back outside. If she goes praise her like crazy. Also pick up what she does with paper towels, and put it in your yard so she can smell it. I'm sorry you're having so much trouble. I can imagine your frustration. |

I agree with you. I crated trained Aubrey, and I am "bed" training Dakota, she sleeps in my bed. The only time she goes to her crate is when shes home alone. |
They thing that helped me to train Aubrey was I got a 30 foot leash to go outside, and I just put him on that, and he does his business and plays. He loves it, and I don't have to be out there with him. ANd it was only 15 dollars, I think. |
I know you're frustrated but please don't think of giving up your baby over this. I was similarly frustrated with mine pooping in his crate but then I found out I was leaving him in too long and feeding him too late at night. (well..my fiance was feeding him too late lol) So I fixed that and suddenly he got it with the poop too. Unfortunately you probably need to start over. When you crate trained her did you take her out FIRST thing in the morning when she definitely had to go and wait until she went? No matter what you do you HAVE to wait as long as it takes them to go, or else they don't get why they were even outside. And if they do happen to go inside when you can see, like someone else said you must pick them up and say a firm "NO" and take them outside. Also you should use "eliminate" or natures miracle stain remover to get rid of the pee smell. They love to go where they have gone before. And when she does do it right PRAISE. I still praise mine all the time just to keep it enforced as the right thing to do. I think crate training works really well, but if you don't want to go back to that, at least keep him confined or like on your lap where he won't be able to make a mistake unsupervised. Those mistakes aren't good for training b/c you can't step in and make a correction. Even though mistakes that you catch are annoying they are actually really good for the training process b/c when you correct them it really helps them make the connection to what you want. Its all about being clear with what you want them to do. Mine's 14mo old now and though i won't say he never messes up, it is extremely rare now, and usually when he does its my fault because I missed the signs that he needed to go out. It probably also helps that i don't and never will have carpet.lol. Good luck, hope my rambling is some help. |
hey maybe move te carpet outside:) then she'll be going outside:D sorry just had to say it.... mine are older than yours and still have some problems. |
I know someone on another pet forum that was having this problem with her little dog. Her dog always pottied on the carpet. Your carpet probably smells like pee and poop now and she thinks that is the place to go. She's basically trained right now to go on the carpet. The person said they ripped out all the carpet in their house and put down wood floors (you could also do tile). The peeing in the house stopped immediately because the dog didn't want to go on the wood floors - it was trained to carpet in its mind. I've also heard that a lot of dogs think carpet feels like grass. I think as long as you have carpet in your house, your dog is going to go there because she thinks that is where she is supposed to go. I would get rid of the carpet and replace it with all wood, laminate or tile or some sort of hard surface. |
Oh my :( I can definitely feel the frustration in your post and I do not blame you one bit. I can only imagine how crazy this must be making you. I think everyone so far has had some great advice for you, so I will just say - GOOD LUCK! |
I use baby diapers on Cody when he goes on the floor, he hates them! So we have very few problems with him. Another suggestion (I just thought of it:) ) whether you have a yard or not put her on a leash that way when she goes into the house she's still attached to you and you can grab her up if she starts to go on the floor. |
I've come to the conclusion boy yorkies > girl yorkies.... only because girls are so stubborn!! :p I still love my missy though.... She's is too a stubborn one, but thank God she is potty trained, and amazing how she picked up fast. I hope your girl succeeds soon.... I know it must be so hard on you. :thumbdown |
Great advice and great encouragement already above. So I'll just elaborate on the carpet cleaning. We have an elderly cat that developed the habit of going on the carpet. I can tell you if you think you're cleaning it by just spraying a little of nature's miracle or similar solution on there and blotting it up, you're very wrong. You have to reeeaaallly read the directions and get serious about cleaning the carpet unless you want to get new. You have to literally DOUSE the carpets with the stuff and then cover it with wet towels to give the little enzymes the time to eat all the waste. Oxygen simply kills the enzymes before it's done. So we had to do that in one area (thank goodness!) of our carpet for several days before we got it all. Still, to this day, the animals "pause" there, so I'm still not sure we got it all. You say that she goes on a new spot, so either she really has gone there before and you don't know it, or she really has trained herself to go on carpet. And, in your end-of-the-rope frustration, I also agree with just going the "panty" route. I had a female that had submissive urination that we had to do that with. Good Luck!! |
With crate training, if they don't go when you take them out of the crate and take them outside, bring them back in and put them BACK in the crate. They don't get to come out and play till they potty. Believe me, they DO learn rather quickly. Hang in there, I know the frustration.... |
