Well the way we crate trained my pug is that we kept him on a feeding schedule and from the time he was done eating until the time he went potty he couldnt come out of his crate. Then when we let him out we would always praise and give him a treat.

We tried to train him to go outside but it just wouldnt work. he refused to go outside, though im not sure why. Crate training worked out great for us.:animal36

I am having troubles with a few in my home but with me, I feel it is just hard to get on a good schedule with all my dogs.

What worked well for me, and what I'm doing currently is I am putting the ones that have problems pottying in individual crates in my room. I let them out in the middle of the night to go on potty pads in the bedroom. All during the day, I set a portable clip on timer for 1 hour, and those two having the issues go out.

Once we step outside, I set the timer for 10 minutes. I don't play with them at all. I just say go potty then sit quietly with them.. if they don't potty I simply bring them back in (still on leash) and they go right back in their crates for another 30-hour.

Then we start the whole process over again. I can see that we are making progress because this eliminates the possibility for accidents and everyone is doing a lot better :)

I have always believed that the best way to potty train is to make it as difficult as possible to NOT be successful. That's what you're doing. Sounds like it's working. :thumbup:

I got my dog at 2 years and she was not housebroken. I think you can train an older dog pretty easily and quickly if you are willing to spend the time it takes. Can you get a long weekend some time to work on nothing else? The suggestions you've been given have been good.

1st - she needs to know that going outside is GOOD! It will make you very happy and bring treats. You need to take her out and stay with her until she goes! Do not free feed her at this time - feed twice a day, give her 15 minutes, then put the food away.

Then, 2nd - she needs to know that going inside is NOT GOOD! No happy mom and no treats. Just put outside with a big NO.

3rd - and most important - she is to have NO FREEDOM at this time. Wear her like a fashion accessory. Leash on and attached to you at all times so she has no chance to go in the wrong place.

Believe me - this works!

Yes, it's definitely helping! I was so upset that past few weeks I've been in tears. I cried HAPPY tears last night when Mckenzie did potties on the pad during the night AND ran all the way back from the living room to the bedroom to potty this morning. I was so proud of her!!!

LOL - as a mom to both kids and puppies, I would equate "running all the way back from the living room to the bedroom to potty" to a toddler taking their first steps! Coby hasn't "run all the way back" yet. I'm still reminding him. ;) I'm going to be just as excited as you were!!
