Shredding pee pads, should I just give up? My dog Harlem has now reverted to shredding the pee pads. He is 5 months and he doesn't have the pee pad thing all the way down. He will, however, use the pads either to pee or to poop but never both on the pad. One always ends up on the floor. But now he's shredding the pads even before he uses it and even after he has used it. I want to know how long she he continue to use the pads? At what point do you say no more training pads and should we just give up and take him outside everytime? I really really really don't want a dog that uses the bathroom outside, I guess mainly because I'm lazy and can't imagine taking him out in the cold and also when we are gone, I want him to be able to stay home and use the pad when he has to go by himself. I'm I living in a dream world???? |

My dogs used to do this too. What my mom ended up doing was switching the brand of pee-pads she uses. Maybe try switching up the brand the chemical on the pad might be different and she might stop. I know my mom used to use Green ones and now she uses these blue pads that come in econo size box from Petsmart. |

you're right, i never washed diapers... but i HAVE had to wash nasty outfits and blankies...but i find that child pee doesn't have the potentcy of male dog pee... so does it make your other loads smelly? do you use bleach or an enzyme cleaner or borax or... |

No it doesn't affect the other loads at all! Don't use bleach as it will eventually harden the waterproof barrier, but I do occasionally I do use an enzymatic cleaner like Simple Solution or Odoban just for good measure. But I find it really isn't necessary. They don't smell after washing even without it. I don't put any other laundry in the same load. Just pee pads or if there aren't many pee pads after the prewash I may wash dog bedding with them (but I don't add it until after the prewash). |

The frames do help with that, but are not foolproof. I would recommend a frame that goes all the way around as opposed to the ones where you just poke in the corners to the holder. The ones you have to put together and take apart every time you change the pads are a hassle. If you go with a frame I would recommend the hinged kind that you just lift up the top, replace the pad and replace the top frame. Much easier. |

mine shreds her pee pads too and fluffs it around the house. there were a couple of times where she flipped the pad over and used it on that side. and i, not noticing, picked it up and the pee dripped off onto the carpet.:eek: i want to get into washable pee pads, but so far, what i found useful (i kind of want to use up all these disposable pads first) is bitter apple spray. i spray it around the edges and around the pee pad and she rarely shreds it. i used to think she wouldn't go to it because of the bitter apple, but i took a pee stained napkin and put it in the middle and now she goes on it, with less shredding. she still does it sometimes. it's just less. |

like ianicha i would also like my babies to just use pads. dont know if thats fair on the dogs though. they are supposed to go outside, but like you i feel sooo sorry for my babies going out in the rain etc. i am starting to try and get them outside because i thought thats what everyone does but i would rather just let them do it on pads. does anyone have thoughts on this please.:) |
