Yorkie on the Dog Whisperer
 

Did anyone see the Dog Whisperer today with the Yorkie on it? It was a amazing. Like most Yorkie's.....the little Yorkie on the show ruled the house and he was the boss. (oh....and was sooooo cute too)
The Dog Whisperer said that Yorkies are so cute so their owners let them get away with everything. lol Boy was he right!!!!!!
Anyway it was a great show....just wondering if anyone else watched it?

Nope, missed it. What exactly did he suggest?

He had some GREAT advise. This particular Yorkie attacked the vacuum cleaner and the ironing board everytime the owner brought them out. He advised the owner to take ownership of the items ....by not allowing the Yorkie to come close to the items when in use. He also said to pick a word or sound to use in discipling. But never use the dogs name when discipling....for example: "NO" do not say, "NO BUDDY". Another good suggestion he had was to reach out to your Yorkie and give a firm "tap/touch" to indicate to your Yorkie that you are in charge. (no force necessary just a firm touch) In this particular espisode the Yorkie would run everytime the owner tried to discipline him from attacking the ironing board so the Dog Whisperer suggested putting him on a leash so the Yorkie could not dart away when she was trying to discipline him. He quickly caught on and realized that his owner was in charge. (I cannot wait to try this because my little guy hates the vacuum cleaner and I can never catch him to discipline him when I am vacuuming....it turns into a chasing game to him). The Dog Whisperer also said that we Yorkie owners are so afraid of hurting our Yorkies feelings because they are very sensitive dogs. He said that showing your Yorkie that you are the dominant one is NOT hurting their feelings.
I hope all this made sense...I am trying to type this and watch my kids in the pool. lol

the only thing i didnt like was the collar and the dog was hacking ... i dont think it was her pulling but the baby was excited could be CT .. and he said she would be fine with a colar ...but switched to a harness he said the gagging noise was to get his way i felt it was ct i love cesar though so cute!:p

I saw this one a while back and then one day I think it is Carol(ARCHIE) whos, Buddy, hates the ironing board and when I read it, it reminded me of that episode

I wish I could have seen it. Your story reminds me of my daughter. The other day her and Sammy, running all over the house cause she wanted to take something away from him, it was the funniest thing to watch, like cartoon or something.
Anyway, I'm curious, did he use a collar on him. I think I'd hate for him to use that collar like he does with the big dogs. It makes me nervous cause yorkies are so small.

I didnt see the show but he is right on about yorkie owners myself included

They had it last weekend but it was coming on something like 2 am. I tried to stay up but missed it.

He used a collar and a lead (it looked more like a vinyl rope than a lead) It wasn't one of his correction collars that he uses on the big dogs, it was just to keep the dog near the owner so that he wouldn't run away from her when she was trying to be the dominant one. They switched to a harness, and he still made that noise. I think Cesar is right about it; Paddington makes that noise all the time when I am trying to get him to do something he doesn't really want to, and he only wears a harness. I think he knows that when he makes that sound, I loosen the lead and give him a bit more freedom. It is a conditioned sound. I wouldn't have used that collar though, it would scare me too.

I watched it and thought the baby was adorable ... He sure learned fast not to bother the iron and ironing board. He was a cutie pie ... and only 6 years old.

It was definately a good episode. It really showed how small dogs really get away with murder. If a lab or pointer was acting like that even once they would probably be toast lol but when these wee ones do it.. haha

He did a really great job with him and with the gagging noise, he proved he was doing it intentionally when he switched to the harness but he would randomly do it when he got corrected. Smart little bugger. lol He knew that if he made that noise his mom would back off. This evening I met a friends new yorkie (Champ - big name for such a small guy) and when they even reach for his collar to correct him or to move him he plays the whole "cough cough gag gag I'm dyin here" routine! TOO smart lol

I love how he really explained that a touch correction doesn't mean force or hurting the dog but just to 'snap them back to reality'. Just two fingers with a firm poke is enough to say, "Hey, back off. I'm in charge here." Or since yorkies are so quick on their feet you can touch them with your foot to correct them too.

I wonder if the owner will keep up with his corrections or if she will slack off and let him rule again.. hmm

He only used a slip lead to keep him within reach of his mom for corrections. And once she switched to the harness he was still doing the cough cough gag gag routine so he's a little soap opera king ;)

The large collar you're referring to is called the Illusion Collar and it's not as scary as it looks. (Although, they do appear a little intimidating) Basically it is two collars connected with a slip lead connected through the top portion. The bottom one keeps the upper collar in place where it should be and simply makes it easier to train your dog to walk. One of the biggest problems in teaching your dog to walk properly is that the collar will not stay on the top part of the neck where it should be and therefore your dog pulls and pulls and can actually do damage to their throats that way. All the Illusion Collar does is keep the collar in place for training. It does not put any extra tension or tightness on them and it's not meant as a permanent collar only as a training tool. He doesn't recommended it for small dogs (15lbs & under I think) just because they are so small. But with such small dogs I personally only use face halti's or a body halter to keep the pressure off their throats which are already so sensitive and prone to injury.

You seriously think that he would do something harmful to a dog? My friend and co-worker Karry, who is a dog trainer where I work, went to a few of his seminars and he is amazing. We're going to his seminar in Baltimore this september. And do you really believe that any owner wouldn't jump at the chance to run him into the ground if he ever laid a finger on their dogs innappropriately? Imagine all the money from a lawsuit like that. He would lose everything and he has a lot to lose. Think about it.

If he were ever nasty to a dog they would never respect and trust him the way all the dogs he works with do. There's a reason his entire pack is quiet and accepting of everyone and any other dogs.

I would have loved to have seen that one. I just saw that Season 1 is available on Netflix and Season 2 can be reserved when it is available. I might wait until winter and have a marathon.

Geeze! I wonder why they were overworking him on a treadmill when the complaint from the owner was fear of other dogs.... I also wonder whatever happened to the case; that is from last year.

I totally fell asleep watching the episode. I love Ceasar. He totally rules and I wanted so much to see the yorkie but they showed that one last on the show and I couldn't stay awake:(

I saw it and agree yorkie's rule the house. Riley always barks when I brush or blow dry my hair and when I vacuum. I first tried ignoring it, but that didn't work. So now when he barks I shut the door and make him stay in the other room. Then when I let him back in, he is quiet. The show was helpful. As long as they know they can be with you, then they'll be quiet.

I love Ceasar....I think he has a connection with dogs that is unbelievable. We have all watched him help hundreds of dogs and their owners. His love & devotion to dogs is amazing. I am a very devoted loyal fan!!!!

No matter what a dogs issue is it is usually due to a lack of exercise. Period. First a dog gets a lot of pent up energy, which changes into hyperactivity, anxiety and then aggression. Lack of exercise can drive a dog (or human :p ) into several different kinds of behavior. All of which are unhealthy and unfulfilling. They were probably working him on the treadmill to release a lot of that dogs anxiety and to give him endorphins to feel better. (walking is what dogs do and what makes them feel good) What also might have happened is one of Cesars employees was assigned to this dog and screwed up by leaving the dog alone while it exercised on the treadmill. (note - Cesar has a full staff who help care for and train the dogs at the center bc it would be physically impossible for him to be able to work with every single one of them 24/7 especially while he's traveling around doing his shows and seminars - and besides being a husband to his wife and a father to his two sons) That's rule number one that your dog should never be left unattended while walking the treadmill. I never leave mine. And the person who sued Cesar ( Simple Rules producer Flody Suarez ) claimed to have spent well over $25,000.00 on his dog for surgeries.. Ahem, load of doo doo. And if any of these accusations were with holding don't you think he would have been convicted? The guy who sued him is a big tv money man who knows how to deepen his pockets but in this case he lost.

I DVR the show automatically just so I don't miss one! I'm so glad you mentioned this, i was just wondering when a yorkie would be on because...well...I'm nervous that my baby boy is going to be a little shiz and I am having trouble establishing myself as the pack leader...mainly...because I don't know how:( I love Cesar also. I wish he could live with me. lol

The other thing I've seen really good trainers do it just pick the dog up gently by the ruff of the neck - the loose skin at the base/back of the neck? It's how the mother will correct her pups and just sends the message "That isn't right". Don't pick them all the way up - usually just lifting their front legs off the floor an inch and then gently setting them back down is enough to give them the message.

I use that when our two pups get too rough with eachother. I've seen the "tap/poke" and use it at other times - but on an overly excited pup it can encourage the misbehavior whereas the lifting will interrupt their play and help calm them down.

I'm bummed out I missed it! THanks for posting about this. It was interesting to read how he handled the situation.

Also interesting to see how quickly the dog adjusted to the new rules. It's easy to forget how smart these dogs are!! Guess there's no excuse for poor behavior. :-D

That's exactly right. It's like a reenactment of another dogs bite correction. A lot of people view it as mean or nasty but when it's done correctly it's nothing of the sort. It's part of their language.

And he did learn quickly. I was impressed because it can be very challenging to teach such a small dog new tricks ;) But he was very perceptive and realised his boundaries fairly quickly. The biggest part of the problem was his mom was afraid she was going to hurt his feelings by bossing him but really rules are what dogs need to be happy.
