Those with Male Yorkies-Lifting Leg Question Luigi is still 3 months old and does not lift his leg yet to pee. But I am wondering around what age do male yorkies start lifting their legs? And If I get him neutered earlier (vet said the earliest I can do this is around 4months), does this sometimes prevent them from lifting their leg to pee? And also, for those who paper train their dogs...do you use some sort of "pole" (like a coke bottle or something) so that your yorkie still pees on the pad, but still has something to pee ON when they lift their leg? (any suggestions/ideas for this to make my life easier in the future will be much appreciated). ...just thinking ahead so I can hopefully train properly =) Thanks! |
I would like to know this too. I have read some threads where they used a coke bottle filled with sand and placed it in the middle of the pee pad. |
I forget what age Reece started lifting his leg...hmmm...he is one now and has been lifting quite a while now...maybe around 6 months?? I trained him to go outside only and he NEVER lifts his leg in MY house lol...I think I would flip if he started that...he WILL lift his leg at other peoples houses though...new smells to mark ya know.. Dawn |
I don't have boys, but I wanted to tell you that I've seen these cute plastic fire hydrants online...you can buy them and train your dog to pee near them, and they're washable. Maybe try one of these? I think maybe PetEdge had one? |
I think that sometimes if just depends on the dog. Bailey and Tucker were not neutered until they were about 3 and they have never hiked their leg or humped anything. They just kind of lean into it when they pee. |

Also, if I resorted to just taking him outside to pee (when he's older), how many times would that be? I know it depends..but approximately how many times do your little guys pee in a day? |
Seymour does BOTH!!! If we are traveling and the only place he has is a PEE PAD, he will squat to Pee. If we are outside, he will lift his leg on every tree, fire hydrant, mailbox post...... Hmmmmmm..... if you are left AND right handed it is called ambidextrous. I wonder what this would be called. :idontknow :D |
I got Kalani neutered when he was 4 months and he had just started lifting his leg to pee and still does. I live in an apt. also so use the pee pads. I make sure the pads are up against either the wall or side of the ex-pen and he will only lift his leg at those areas:) I thought about getting one of those little 'posts' but I know that my rascals would just play with it! |

And i think we can just call it "talented." ;) |
We got Teddy neutered at 4 mos and he squats to pee in the yard but when we are taking a walk he lifts his leg to pee on the trees where other dogs have gone. It is so cute he lifts his leg so high he almost falls over. Oh, he is 3 years old now. |
neither of my males is neutered but Ceeby started lifting about seven months old. One of his babies started lifting about twelve weeks old and the other male I have is seven months old and has only lifted his leg once or twice. i made a "pee pole". i filled a two litter coke bottle with water and wrapped a pee pad around it and sat it on another pad. ceeby uses this when the puppies aren't dragging it around. but he doesn't use it every time. |
When I had a male once, I used a plastic milk bottle filled with rocks. |
Jake is pee pad trained, and sometimes he lifts his leg, other times he doesn't. But, when he's outside, he always lifts his leg. He was pretty young when he started. I think I even remember his breeder saying that he sometimes lifted his leg when she still had him. One time I was giving him a bath, and he lifted his leg and peed. |
Nico is 5 months now, and I would say he started about 3 weeks ago. Interestingly enough, he only lifts when he's outside and comes across a tree or fire hydrant. But when using the pee pad, he just kinda leans forward but doesnt lift. I'm certainly not mad at that! :p But I'm guessing that he's just getting the hang of lifting, so who knows what's to come in the future! |
Both my boys are neutered and they both hike their legs. I use a 2 liter bottle filled with water and fasten a potty pad to it with a rubber band around the top. They do very well with it. They also go outside and mark tree's, chairs, flower pots, the pool, etc. I love that they use the "hiking posts" while inside the house. It's been great for me. |
For those of you who use the soda bottles with a pad around them, do your yorkies knock them over even if they're filled with water, sand, etc.? I think I will try this or find an indoor fire hydrant ;) |
Mickey will be 6 months this week, and he JUST started lifting his leg outside... on trees and stuff. He still squats on the pee-pad, and I'm HOPING it stays that way. He is getting neutered in 2 weeks I think. |

Paddy didn't lift his leg till around 7 or 8 months. He saw another dog do it at a yorkie meetup and then copied him. It was very amusing. We've transitioned him from papers and outdoors to only outdoors so we don't want him lifting his leg in the house AT ALL. I dunno, I just would rather marking be an outside thing. |
Our Gizmo is 7 1/2 months and he still squats, indoors on his pee pad or even outside. There arent many dogs in our area so i dont think hes picked up the leg lifting thing. He might one day, but id prefer if he suqatted and remained on his pee pad |
I use a cat litter Bucket. They both lift their legs to pee and to mark. |
My boys started lifting between 4-6 months old.My 2 neutered boys never lift inside the house. But my 3 intact boys will. And if 1 of my girls are in heat. Belly band time. I use an empty clorox bottle wrapped with a pad and place that on a pad & they lift there. I love to watch a male pup when he first learns to lift. My Bogie boy used to sometimes fall over when he first started lifting.:lol tears Speaking of lifting, does anyone have females that lift? I have 2 that do. |
Willie started leg lifting around 4 months---Archie much later around 7 months. Willie always lifts outside, but since he is such a "squatty body" (he has very short legs) the lifting doesn't change his basic position. He still squats on pads inside so I've never had an issue of trying any kind of target. He did fall over once, first thing in the morning and he wasn't completely awake. I think he was a bit embarrassed. Archie usually still squats to actually pee even outside and usually only lifts to mark, especially on walks. They were neutered at 7 months. My niece's female Yorkie is a leg lifter too. I've never seen other female dogs do that. Maybe it is another "Yorkie thing". |
I use the wee wee pads.. Around 4 months Benjamin started lifting his leg...on the wee wee pad, (no soda bottle or anything) he is almost 5 months... Sometimes he squats (he does a little jump into position that just cracks me up) Sometimes he lifts his leg... SOMETIMES (and this is the best) when he is lifting one leg he will switch to the other leg in the middle of peeing... good luck with your training! |
Doesn't left leg yet... Hi, Zachary is 14 weeks and he still doesn't lift his leg and my vet told me he couldn't neuter him until he is six months old. |
Harvey Was About 4 Months Old When He Started To Lift His Leg - But If We Are Out Walking And He Cant Find Anything To Wee Against Then He Will Squat..... He Has Never Lifted His Leg In My House Our Anywhere Else. And He Has Not Yet Been Neutered - He Is 15 Months Old. |
CJ started llifting his leg at 10 weeks he doesn't do it every time inside or outside. Oh he is just now 4 months. My female lifts both legs at the same time..... She starts out lifting one and then the other side and the other comes up and she is walking just on her front legs and peeing at the same time, it is funny to watch. :D |
I am so glad to hear that other little boys are hiking their leg's at an early age. This is my first Yorkie and my first small male dog. I have a 9 mo Rhodesian Rhidgeback that hasn't even started hiking his leg yet. Gus is 4 1/2 mos and has been hiking for about 3 weeks now. We are still trying to get the hang of housebreaking, but no real complaints yet. I am so in YORKIE love!!! |
Scampers started lifting his leg at about a year old. I don't know when Brownie started, he was probably young though when he did. And the male maltese I had was over a year old and he never lifted his leg and none of them were neutered. Scampers will go in their potty tent first thing in the morning and he will squat to pee. Then he gets the bellyband and I just give him potty breaks through out the day. He doesn't lift his leg much but the bellyband really helps for when he does. |
Baxter is almost 6 months (boy that went fast) and he just started lifting his leg now - Not necessarily on a tree - he could be in mid squat and he'll lift his leg - I think his back leg is getting wet - and that's why he lifts it. It is so cute though! |
